  1. It's the "much larger quarters" on State Street that I remember. I guess I thought that was the original location, but apparently it was the third. (Or fourth?) Later it was a Steve & Barry's sports apparel store (low-quality Michigan-branded stuff, mostly), and after Steve & Barry's went kaput, it became an additional location of the M Den (more Michigan-branded sports apparel). Shaman Drum, another good local independent bookshop, was two doors down, but it closed in 2009 and is now a Five Guys Burgers.
  2. I don't remember that far back, but I do remember when they were still just a single store on State Street near the corner at Liberty. Eventually they moved into the former Jacobsen's on Liberty.
  3. Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow? - The Rolling Stones Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? - Derek & The Dominos Have You Ever Loved A Woman - Derek & The Dominos (also recorded by Freddie King and others) Are You Ready For The Fallout? - Fastball How Many More Times - Led Zeppelin Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin
  4. These awards have become so disconnected from reality that they should just shut them down.
  5. Even Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief? (Also, I thought Patriot Games was pretty weak.)
  6. There is no correct answer. The series was given a vague ending precisely so people would discuss it ad nauseam. These are fictional characters. If you believe Tony died, then Tony died. If you believe he didn't, then he didn't.
  7. I'm glad that Jeff's life has settled down and that he's found some happiness in it. But if his music is now going to be "postcards from home," I, as a fan, really will "move on" ... to some other band.
  8. I didn't know it was last night. I'll try to take it tonight or tomorrow. If I do well enough on the test, this time I'll do better at coming up with five interesting things about my life to put on the form at the audition. I struggled to come up with stuff when I went a couple of years ago (my life's not that exciting, sadly), and I believe that's a major factor for them in choosing who to put on the show.
  9. I just think it's the weakest Wilco album (yes, weaker than A.M.). This is an amazingly talented band, but I don't sense that their full potential is being reached with the music they've recorded lately. Part of that lies in the songwriting -- as long as Jeff thinks that songs like "You And I" and "You Never Know" are good enough for Wilco, the band will fall short of greatness. But part of it is also the arrangements, which have become pedestrian and uninteresting, for the most part. Too much gloss, not enough grit, rawness, or soul. And I'm a major dissenter on "Bull Black Nova." I think t
  10. Well, duh. By now I'm sure they're pretty tired of the talent at the Pittsburgh clubs.
  11. You may be right. But are you willing to bet the planet on that? Personally, I'm not. The mere chance that we're a significant contributor to climate change, and that by changing our behavior we might be able to slow its progress or stop it in its tracks, is sufficient reason to start trying. If it turns out that humans have nothing to do with it, well, at least we would have developed cleaner and more sustainable means of living our lives. But the consequences of going all in on the idea that we don't contribute to climate change, and using that assumption to justify doing nothing about
  12. We just watched Kung Fu Panda for the first time and when I recognized Rogen's voice I yelled at the screen. I don't even mind him that much, but damn, he long ago crossed over the "overexposure" line. Putting him and Jack Black together is a veritable circus of overexposure. (I don't particularly care for Jack Black.)
  13. It's been said a million times but I'll say it again: Do not confuse weather with climate change. The earth is getting warmer. As paradoxical as it may sound, that means that we sometimes have wicked cold snaps.
  14. We'll just have to agree to disagree. Vehemently.
  15. I'm digging it so far (about halfway through my first listen). It takes me a few investigatory spins before I start to dig very deeply into lyrics, so I can't comment on the quality of those quite yet. But the sound of this one suits me just fine up to this point.
  16. As of this moment, the Chicago Bulls have the same record as the Los Angeles Lakers (33-14). This probably says more about the Lakers than the Bulls, but as a Bulls fan, I'm pleased by this. I can't say I see the Bulls getting past Boston and/or Miami in the playoffs, but nobody's going to want to play them in a seven-game series. Hopefully Noah will return soon and they'll get even better.
  17. Facebook has ruined VC birthday threads. (Hope you had a great one, Donna.)
  18. Where I'm from, we call this "spam."
  19. I didn't watch it live, but I was sitting in my physics classroom (senior year of high school) and the teacher wheeled a TV in so we could watch the news coverage. Hard to believe it's been a quarter century. (Even harder to believe it's been a quarter century since I was a senior in high school.)
