At home watching the Celtics V Cavs on TNT and starting looking for this thread here. Alas, it doesn't exist. So, I had to go ahead and do the honors. My preseason Final 4 Lakers & Spurs in the west and Magic and Celtics in the east. Shaq is gonna fuck up the Cavs, no doubt about it. I'll take the Lakers to repeat.

As to the peeing in line thing? I learned just the other day from someone in line that it is common for long-distance runners in marathons to defecate on themselves and just keep on going! So, you never know what kind of information you might receive while waiting in a Wilco line.

Kevin, Send Mary well wishes and support from Kentucky. I've had some losses in recent times too, and those first few days can be as tough as it gets, but I'm sure she's surrounded and supported by great friends like yourself. Hopefully we'll see the both of you back out on the concert trail before too long.

Glad to see you made it in one. Another busy weekend coming up here in Louisville: Avett Bros on Fri & Monsters of Folk on Saturday.

I just posted quite a few, often unsuspecting shots I took in the GA line prior to show 2 last week in Chicago. Follow the below link and enjoy, Greg:

Ah Shit I totally missed this, but alas we'll be together in Louisville soon enough for the big rock show. Dinner's on me!

That DBT & Wilco line up would be ridiculously good, but I have a tough time envisioning DBT opening for Wilco, or for Wilco headlining over DBT. I now that's redundant, but I think you know what I mean.

If this is becoming the unofficial roll call, I'm leaving tomorrow as well. Any shows or events of note in town on Friday or Saturday night? See everyone on Sunday.

I learned how to make distinctions between my favorites and what is really the best long ago, these are my favorites. Wilco - "Being There" Slint - "Spiderland" Uncle Tupelo - "Anodyne" Jawbreaker - "24 Hour Revenge Therapy" Lucinda Williams - "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" Avail - "Satiate" Leatherface - "Mush" Chisel - "8 A.M. All Day" Propagandhi - "How To Clean Everything" Fugazi - "Repeater"

Happy 60th Birthday Bruuuuuuuuce!
LouisvilleGreg replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Bruce and The E Streeters opened with "Seaside Bar Song" and also played "The Fever" last night in Philly. How awesome would it be to see either one of those lost '73 classics, not too mention both in one show. Wow! -
Monsters of Folk (James, Oberst & Ward)

Anyone thinking of coming to Louisville for the MOF Halloween show should be informed that the Avett Bros are playing at the same venue, the night before. That makes for a hell of a weekend combo. -
The best band in the 1990s
LouisvilleGreg replied to Gobias Industries's topic in Someone Else's Song
We should be friends! I love, love, love some Leatherface, and man "Mush" is aces. I saw them a few times in the 90's and every show seemed like the best show ever. Also in the same vein, Jawbreaker. I hitchhiked to see Jawbreaker in Ohio once, something I would never do for a band today. As for best band though. Perhaps being reared in punk, I'm biased but to me politically, musically, lyrically, hands down, no questions asked, the most important band of the decade, especially the first half, was Fugazi. They wore their morals on their sleeves, and didn't compromise their music or the cultu -
Evening with shows, sans opening acts, could be a good solution to more setlist diversity. But then again Wilco has toured with MMJ, Sonic Youth, Dr. Dog, The Roots. Those are some stellar opening acts.

Can anyone else think of a band that is so frequently referenced in song by other bands? I'm thinking of Cheap Trick, Weezer and of course Wilco all referencing KISS by name in song. That's pretty cool, but none of those nods is as cool as the DBT's love for ACDC in their "Let There Be Rock."
-
Ahh, bringing this back to a Wilco thread, with the question on covers. The AGIB tour and KTV tours saw several somewhat frequent covers. Not so many the past few years, save for special occasions, and of course solo Tweedy shows. Usually bands introduce covers into their setlists mid-period between releases, so maybe next year they'll add in a few.
-
I might be willing to move to a city that plays both "Ride On" and "Jailbreak" on the radio. That "Jailbreak," ep is still my favorite ACDC release.
-
Uh oh! Now I might have to spin this thread into one defending Slade as well. You're gonna deny "Gudbuy T' Jane," those ridiculous outfits and the ugliest band in rock?
-
I was at a hipster bar here in Louisville over the weekend and one of the bands playing that night were warming up with "Love theme from Kiss." Myself and one other guy recognized what it was. We were very excited, but our friends thought we were crazy.
-
Well somebody's gotta step up and take some punches for KISS. I did that literally on occasion while in middle school. I'll give anyone that they were a sinking ship starting in 1978 on, with only brief moments of inspiration from that point on. However, take away the makeup, take away the theatrics and all the marketing, and what's left at least early on, is some ridiculously catchy rock music. There were a few clunkers on every album, and their drummer certainly wasn't much, but there are 30-40 songs in their canon that I would argue are as worthy of praise as anything this side of Big Star
-
I might be close to agreeing on that assessment about Cooley. His songs seem totally effortless but always pack quite the emotional punch, and his straight up rockers are as catchy as anything I can think of. I have friends who've never gotten beyond Kiss and ACDC from middle school who are blown away by songs like "3 Dimes Down," and "Marry Me." If there were any justice in the world the guy would be a huge rock star, with 13 year old kids hanging posters of him up on their walls.

Maybe it's just been in the past year or so that it has become harder to find. But Plan 9 Records in Richmond had copies in perpetual stock for years and years. Now "Mermaid Avenue" is the hard record to find, with no reprint in sight. Glad I already have that.

They really can put on a smoking live show. It's been awhile since I last saw them and unfortunately I wont be catching any shows on this tour. I was listening to "Say Something," just a couple of days ago and man what a frickin' great tune that is. Looking forward to yet another new album from a band that really seems to embrace putting out records in rapid succession. I dig that about DD.

I think even a comp of LT and HT for me would still likely rank last in the catalog. TGOTJ is a bit long and slow in places and I really don't like the latest very much, but that '92 stuff to me is pretty generic. I far like BITUSA over both of those albums, and big pop production aside, there are some dark tunes on that record, and "Bobby Jean," just slays me every time, even after 25 years of listening to it.
