  1. Is this going to be a joke, Lou? If so, I'll bite - When? I haven't caught any of the Convention - typically they are always a bit of mess (both parties). I must admit the whole Costco/Romney bit is pretty funny.
  2. Just listened to that this morning - it's a good one, but Warpaint got me listening to the Crowes again.
  3. I think, more so than Von, Fred was definitely more of a mentor to musicians. Of course owning a club, Fred dealt with musicians a lot more than Von, too.
  4. Thanks, Lou. Below is Howard Reich's review of last night's Wynton Marsalis' show - I am assuming, then, that Reich did not make it to Von's memorial, unless he booked it up to Orchrestra Hall... Anyway Wynton dedicated last night's show to Freeman. http://www.chicagotr...0,120676.column
  5. In your impression, Lou, don't use the words Chicago, jazz, or his age and I think you will be fine. But it all seriousness, let us know. My neighbor told me that they were having it Christ Universal Temple, because it holds (for lack of better term) a very large congregation. I think they are expecting a rather large gathering.
  6. Some of the cd's sold in those stores will be signed by Dylan, too. I never heard of this type of marketing (pop up stores) before, but perhaps I am out of the loop on such things. On another note I saw Dylan last Friday in Fort Wayne, IN. (nice town). Good show - cool to see him playing the grand piano, very rudimentary playing, but good. He sang while playing the organ, piano, harmonica, guitar, and even up front without anything, as he has been for bit now - not bad. The voice held up throughout nicely (by Dylan standard), even my wife commented how engaged he seemed throughout the nigh

I caught a Jeff/Nels performance, too - great stuff, indeed. I didn't realize that the song was played only 8 times. Caught 3 of them. It is a good tune.
  8. No - won't be able to make it tonight. I misread the date originally and thought it conflicted with the Dylan show last Friday - but, I have something going on tonight, too. Thanks for posting the obit from the Spanish paper - I'm only sleepling - nice to see that. I did talk to my neighbor regarding Von's band show on the 19th of August - she said that it was a packed house and a very special evening. Hopefully there will some type of memorial at this years Hyde Park Jazz Fest (9/29-9/30)
  9. C'mon Crow, it's completely different. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/bob-dylan-on-his-dark-new-album-tempest-20120801
  10. I am being a dork and gonna hold off listening until the release date - looking forward to it.
  11. The radio is playing Norah Jones' version of Jesus, Etc. - sounds pretty good.
  12. Listening to it on laptop with headphones (and only a few songs), I think the mix is fine, Nels is loud, but not bad-loud. The Les Paul he is playing on Standing O isn't Duane's. Does he play a Les Paul in another song?
  13. I think the Gold Top still belongs to the Allman Family - Nels is just borrowing it - could be wrong, though. It's great that the guitar got over to Europe. I don't think Duane ever played in Europe, Hell, has the Allman Brothers ever played in Europe? Anyway - beautiful guitar.
  14. I tried reading it, but I don't subscribe to the WSJ. Can you give me the jist of the article? The President is a pragmatist...esp. if has to do with coal (Illinois). But like Sparky says - "They are all the same".
  15. That is cool - It would a whole lot cooler if Robertson makes an appearance. Hopefully him and Garth got an invite.
  16. The whole Bain/tax issue is playing a role in the election. No Presidential candidate does anything with polling it first. I am sure the Governor's camp poled undecided/independents and concluded that they indeed care about this issue and in a negative way. The President's camp poled the same pool of people and came to the same conclusion, thus they are hammering him at every chance. It probably won't change anybody's mind who is already in the Governor's camp, though.
  17. Just got my shipping notice for the Spring 90 release - I guess that's kinda cool, it was suppose to ship on the 31st. Listening to the 2nd set of 10.1.94, again. Jerry singing and overall performance is great for the period - I wonder if this means he was on really great stuff for the show or straight...I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day.
  18. Speaking of stolen bases and baseball cards, a couple of weeks ago I was looking through by old baseball cards (that I still keep at parents, after 25 years or so) and came upon one of my prized possessions when I was a kid. It was still in its nifty case. Now it's displayed on my 2 1/2 year old dresser. Stealing bases seems to be a lost art - Good for Hamilton. Go, White Sox.
  19. There are always sound issues at Rosemont. I believe this was one of Cutler's first shows after taking over the house sound from Healy - I could be wrong about that, though.
  20. Sadly, never made it to a Deer Creek Dead show, which is criminal on my part. "All of my friends" (Black Peter went through my head there) always went down there to catch the shows and came back with tapes of them, which was good. 7/19/94 was a good one. The 94 Soldier Field shows were dismal - I almost skipped the 95 Soldier Field Run, because of the dismal 94 run. I didn't get tickets for the 95 run when they went on sell, but my friends had extra's so I went. The 95 run wasn't great, but I would have been kicking myself forever for missing their last show - glad I went.
  21. Well they played great against the White Sox this past weekend (or one can say the Sox stunk up the joint). I always enjoy watching the games at Kaufman on TV - which different thread in itself, I guess. The only parks I have been to are the three (past and present) Chicago ones.
  22. Just the three Chicago ones - Wrigley - Old and New Comiskey Park. Been to a bunch of Minor League parks for concerts - not sure if that counts, though.
  23. I was at the 3/16/94 Rosemont, IL show - it was pretty decent - they best of the 4 I saw that year. http://archive.org/details/gd94-03-16.sbd.ladner.7778.sbeok.shnf
  24. I have seen other people guess Jamaica, too - not sure if anything has been confirmed, though - I have no idea where it was taken. Not sure what musicians wouldn't be into the actual musician's of the GD - they partied with the best of them, even the Stones and them had some fun. I can see where some would not be into Deadheads (stinky hippies ).
