  1. Just got my shipping notice for the Spring 90 release - I guess that's kinda cool, it was suppose to ship on the 31st. Listening to the 2nd set of 10.1.94, again. Jerry singing and overall performance is great for the period - I wonder if this means he was on really great stuff for the show or straight...I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day.
  2. Speaking of stolen bases and baseball cards, a couple of weeks ago I was looking through by old baseball cards (that I still keep at parents, after 25 years or so) and came upon one of my prized possessions when I was a kid. It was still in its nifty case. Now it's displayed on my 2 1/2 year old dresser. Stealing bases seems to be a lost art - Good for Hamilton. Go, White Sox.
  3. There are always sound issues at Rosemont. I believe this was one of Cutler's first shows after taking over the house sound from Healy - I could be wrong about that, though.
  4. Sadly, never made it to a Deer Creek Dead show, which is criminal on my part. "All of my friends" (Black Peter went through my head there) always went down there to catch the shows and came back with tapes of them, which was good. 7/19/94 was a good one. The 94 Soldier Field shows were dismal - I almost skipped the 95 Soldier Field Run, because of the dismal 94 run. I didn't get tickets for the 95 run when they went on sell, but my friends had extra's so I went. The 95 run wasn't great, but I would have been kicking myself forever for missing their last show - glad I went.
  5. Well they played great against the White Sox this past weekend (or one can say the Sox stunk up the joint). I always enjoy watching the games at Kaufman on TV - which different thread in itself, I guess. The only parks I have been to are the three (past and present) Chicago ones.
  6. Just the three Chicago ones - Wrigley - Old and New Comiskey Park. Been to a bunch of Minor League parks for concerts - not sure if that counts, though.
  7. I was at the 3/16/94 Rosemont, IL show - it was pretty decent - they best of the 4 I saw that year. http://archive.org/details/gd94-03-16.sbd.ladner.7778.sbeok.shnf
  8. I have seen other people guess Jamaica, too - not sure if anything has been confirmed, though - I have no idea where it was taken. Not sure what musicians wouldn't be into the actual musician's of the GD - they partied with the best of them, even the Stones and them had some fun. I can see where some would not be into Deadheads (stinky hippies ).
  9. The above pic was in a TRI Studio email I just received, pretty cool pic. A decent rendition of Death or Glory is at the TRI site, too. I think 89-90 stands up pretty well up against the best of the rest of the eras. It all depends on the day on which time period I listen to. It's one of the reason why I dig the Dead so much - a wide range of sounds/songs/styles throughout their career. Not many other bands have that. I suppose the different styling of Miles throughout his career comes to mind.
  10. http://www.chicagotr...,5394604.column I will be catching a Dylan show in Ft. Wayne on the 28th. Hopefully they put together a memorial concert at some point. I also realized on the 20th that Teddy "The Bear" Thomas and Von Freeman's Rhythm Section played at Room 43 (south side club) on the 19th, of course I was out of town. It's good to see them playing together, perhaps this would have been their first gig, since Von's passing. My neighbor runs the Sunday shows at Room 43, need to ask her how the 19th went.
  11. Well, not in my book. They both are horrible songs.
  12. Doing a quick search, it looks like you (Lou) put together 4 or 5 VC excursions to the Lounge - well done. I did participate in one of them. Of course, this current site only goes back to 05 and the Archives are still down, so perhaps there were more...
  13. I thought we couldn't talk about Chicago anymore on this site. Remphish1, if you have not done so already, you may want to check Price Line, Orbitz, etc. You may find some downtown deals. Coming here over Labor Day is going to make it more difficult to find a deal, though. But, my wife and I have found some good deals when we decide to stay downtown for an anniversary or such. Jazz Fest will be going on that weekend - it's free. As far as hot dogs, being a vegetarian, I can't help you much - haven't had one in a while. The White Sox will be town, you can catch an game and have a hot dog
  14. Does Von's former back-up band still have a regular gig there?
  15. By way of CNN, below is Romney's 5 point plan to tackle the economy. Nice article. I think we need some new ideas... http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012/08/15/romney-economy-plan/?iid=HP_LN
  16. I wouldn't mind hearing the below show - anyone attend the concert? Doesn't appear to be a source out there.

  18. Below is a Suntimes piece. http://www.suntimes.com/14466939-761/chicago-jazz-icon-von-freeman-dead-at-88-walked-tuff-to-the-end.html
  19. Hey Lou, I did find a trailer/clip of the U of C interview/performance that the filmmakers put together (see below). It doesn't look that WBEZ has yesterday's segment up, yet. Wish I made it down to the New Apartment more (only went twice), especially since it was so close to my place. He definitely was an interesting player. Would be cool to hear some of his stuff when he played with Jimmy Reed, but thus far I can't dig up any recordings.
  20. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/chi-von-freeman-dies-chicago-jazz-music-20120813,0,4655061,full.column LouieB should be the one starting this thread. Sad day for the Chicago jazz scene - he has been quite sick as of late (and quite old), so obviously not a surprise. Glad I caught him live a few times. WBEZ had a very nice segment this afternoon.
  21. Like Springsteen - what an "abortion" ..... (i keed, i keed)
  22. Rock Springs was a book I had to read in a college course --- great, great book. Speaking of Colorado - Kent Haruf (while at Southern Illinois University) was the one who assigned Rock Springs - Kent wrote a couple of books set in Colorado - both worth reading. Speaking of SIU, I am reading the below book - this is her first book of short stories - she is mostly writes poetry and also has a book of essay that focuses on her Multiple sclerosis . Not only is she a great writer - she was a great teacher. - Man, SIU had a great creative program in the early nineties. Rodney Jones and Ricardo Cruz
  23. http://www.moogis.com/moogislive/ Moogis is running the Peach Fest today and tomorrow.
