  1. I gotta say, I'm one of the chin waggers that spread false rumors about Jim. I read that SY interview and can see how Lee Renaldo thought film and no music was Jim's M.O. More than anything that appears true, except he's still making music. Which is great. Sorry, to all the new Jim O fans who asked for new work, when I erroneously told them it wont come.
  2. I don't have the faintest guess as to what this record is going to sound like. Obviously it will have better vocals than 99% of the albums released this year. Beyond that I've got no guesses and I love that. Think I'll go listen to Fox Confessor again. It's only one of the best albums ever made, ever.
  3. Everyone I know that has spent a lot of time with Third has been pretty mesmerized by it. I can't describe the album as something I "enjoy", but like some dramatic films it conjures emotions, and puts out an atmosphere that is intense, and somewhat disconcerting. It is definitely not a trip-hop album. I would say listen to it when you're going somewhere with headphones on. That isn't a command to like it, (or anything that ridiculous) but more to give it a chance as something that is not a "piece of shit". I think it's amazing IMHO.
  4. I feel like Murray Street has a strong O'rourke presence. It's also one of the better, mellower, Sonic Youth albums.
  5. It is a strange connection to make. I find it most fruitful when comparing YHF to KID A. They both were a complete shock to the bands audience. They both contemplate the room for humanity in a high tech world. They both use electronic manipulation to sonically and symbolically interrupt the lyrical landscape. In the most intuitive way possible I can imagine listening to YHF on the L in chicago and having it be the perfect soundtrack and I can imagine sitting in the tube waiting for the Jubilee line listening to KID A. YHF and the L go outdoors where there are skyscrapers, but old wood
  6. Grammar, and defensiveness aside, I think Panther makes a great point. Yay, for still being excited!
  7. I did a double take when John walked by last time I was in Chicago, and had to jog half a block to catch up. (didn't want to regret that one). He tried not to laugh at me while I caught my breath and shook his hand. The guy is just as nice as he seems. I saw Nels do an in-store at a small record shop in CO. Talked to him for a little while. He seemed just as eager to talk to everyone about music, as they were to him. He started talking to this lady who seemed to know him from years back and he met her daughter for the first time. She was introduced as Naima and he said "Oh, like that b
  8. So I'm wrong, technically on that one. But the point is: everyone was already shaping their opinions on the album, but they hadn't heard one of the key tracks.
  9. "Something In the Air" live at Redrocks. That's a good feeling.
  10. Even if we were ranking qualitatively I wouldn't understand the flow chart here.
  11. I feel the need to reitterate. No one has any clue what the next record will sound like. It is so weird to me when they debut two brand new songs and someone goes "Oh, shit. Next album is gonna sound like that. THat kind of sucks." I'm sure be it good, or bad, we will all be surprised when there is a new record. Does anyone remember the video where they debuted "Late Greats" it sounded like a total dud. Ended up being great. "Spiders" went through a complete overhaul. "You Are My Face" wasn't played live until after the record came out. etc. etc.
  12. I totally hear that. I think this is what I've been secretly hoping for, for a while. We will have to wait and see. Whatever happens next will be a surprise. SBS is mostly classicism in the rock sense. I think this group of musicians can continue to find the continuum between what some might call 'avant-garde' (for lack of a better signpost) and pop music. This is really what YHF and AGIB are both doing, in completely different ways. There are slivers of it on SBS. To me that territory has always been where the band has stepped from being solid, into being magnificent.
  13. This is where we get silly because it is so subjective and people get offended- but- "You Are My Face" obliterates "Candyfloss", or "Can't Stand It". "Impossible Germany" makes "ELT" look ditzy. I could go on. But, I would guess from what you said you wouldn't agree. Meanwhile, there is no such thing as a weak YHF track as it is a modern masterpiece (picture the comic book store guy from the simpsons saying this). I do feel that AGIB and YHF struck an emotional chord with me that SBS has never quite hit, but I have said before and I will say again. Since it came out SBS has already st
  14. Someone always says this, and since no one has, I guess I will: This is the first time these guys have ever played these songs live. They could very well change. Both, or neither could easily end up on the next record. I don't think when they debut new tunes the first thought on their mind is how the VC community will react to the downloaded bootlegs. That said, "One Wing" is like "Impossible Germany" crossed with "On and On and On" with a more muscular ending. "Sunny Feeling" is jaunty, catchy, decent and very b-side feeling. This really has no effect on my ability to guess what the
  15. And quite honestly friends if you are not a Brown or Yale alum you simply have no business there. Tanglewood is a delicious ending to a summer in the Hamptons, (muh muh).
  16. Really?! I hope not. I'll get back to you on Tuesday. I've been looking forward to that record for months. I predict they're the next "talked about" band.
  17. I'm a dick. John Stiratt is a buddha. You're a bunny. New Dr. Dog comes out Tuesday. Everybody's happy.
  18. Your English is fine, it's just Mike Watt never stops for a period. I had a hard time figuring it out too. Yay for Japan though. I wonder if they need another roadie....
  19. Mikael and Pat are great. Imagine SBS without the keys, or Impossible Germany with only two guitars. Jim O'Rourke has distanced himself from music, and might not come back to it any time soon. Glenn plays bells while he's playing his drums, check out the crotales on IATTBYH. Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective and Dr. Dog are all really new bands, I think Wilco wouldn't lean towards a combination of recent contemporaries. Sorry, I'm excited too. And John Stiratt is the most under rated bass player of all time, you're right on that.
  20. I heard Hillary has been at the loft rehearsing her tambourine skills. Like Janis, but more mom.
  21. Man, I got excited. Then I found out they're opening for the Charlie Hunter Trio both dates in CO. And it's $23. Maybe next time.
  22. I think the trick is, it draws from a very established palette of musical styles (Big Star, Fairport Convention, Neil Young, the Byrds etc.) but it was written and performed by a group of musicians who are all uncommonly talented. That coupled with a very distinct production style (TJ Doherty hard at work) and you get a record full of things that have happened before; yet feeling completely new. I am vexed to think what the record they're working on now will sound like.
  23. Not so much of an idle speculation man, huh?
