  1. Mikael and Pat are great. Imagine SBS without the keys, or Impossible Germany with only two guitars. Jim O'Rourke has distanced himself from music, and might not come back to it any time soon. Glenn plays bells while he's playing his drums, check out the crotales on IATTBYH. Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective and Dr. Dog are all really new bands, I think Wilco wouldn't lean towards a combination of recent contemporaries. Sorry, I'm excited too. And John Stiratt is the most under rated bass player of all time, you're right on that.
  2. I heard Hillary has been at the loft rehearsing her tambourine skills. Like Janis, but more mom.
  3. Man, I got excited. Then I found out they're opening for the Charlie Hunter Trio both dates in CO. And it's $23. Maybe next time.
  4. I think the trick is, it draws from a very established palette of musical styles (Big Star, Fairport Convention, Neil Young, the Byrds etc.) but it was written and performed by a group of musicians who are all uncommonly talented. That coupled with a very distinct production style (TJ Doherty hard at work) and you get a record full of things that have happened before; yet feeling completely new. I am vexed to think what the record they're working on now will sound like.
  5. Not so much of an idle speculation man, huh?
  6. Yeah Deerhoof is completely amazing. They just seem like one of those bands that is out there enough that it's a stretch for some folks, but likewise once they stretch they can savor it. Milk Man is a great album.
  7. They were smart enough to exclude the fact that he probably doesn't record much on those Vox amps. Still kick ass stuff though, I'd be happy to get an endorsement. I guess I better sit here and hold my breath.
  8. It seems they have done a lot of growth, in terms of composition. On () they had a lot of reoccurring themes, and they seemed to be enchanted with their own ability to use certain sounds, song structures and jams to create a mood. Which they did well, but ad. infinitum. I only listened to Takk a couple of times, but it struck me that they were trying very hard to break their own mold and write with some more pop structures and not always relying on the build which bands like Godspeedyoublackemperor and Mogwai seem to fall back on. Listening to this stream, which has little stutters for so
  9. Bad movie. Cool soundtrack.
  10. That is awesome. FYI geeked is a common euphemism for being on copious amounts of cocaine. But, hey you just paid off a house, you're entitled to cut loose!
  11. What is richly ironic is that the classic (and respectable) conservative economic agenda is to tax as little as possible. Have the government spend less. (I myself am a bit of a socialist, but I can see how this could be the most rational approach.) George W. and I believe to a lesser degree McCain are so military obsessed there are countless billions spent on fancy death machines. But right wingers smile as other more useful programs are cut to save hard working American's dollars. If you invest in education, public health (including reproductive education and affordable if not free bir
  12. Heres some things I've noticed about McCain: Discuss.
  13. Yeah whats the deal with those? Before you open them they're good for like a year and a half. Do they really get bad after opening, and leaving in the fridge for two weeks?
  14. Agreed. Or maybe it was originally Can I Do This? followed by the more successful double album Fuck Yeah I Can
  15. Did she really not have a chance from the beginning? I thought she had more of a chance than Obama, back in the day. I also felt equally good about their campaigns in the beginning, but as time went on Clinton seemed more caustic and Obama more inspiring.
  16. Yeah, I might have to leave town for a little while.
  17. Wow. We just watched a piece of history. More to come.......
  18. This is a pressing and fascinating conundrum. Biologists/Anthropologists ruled years ago that race is scientifically irrelevant, and a useless concept for organizing people into groups. In other words that it does not exist. This does not erase its effect on all things social. It exists in the way people see each other whether or not it is a concrete fact. This is where myth becomes reality. Someone's self-perception based on race combined with others perception of it, creates a real life situation. Which effects decisions. But since I'm in a round about way agreeing with Edie, I th
  19. If you really put your mind on the drum parts you will realize most drummers couldn't pull of SBS like Kotche. There are a couple of technically difficult parts (the fast parts of Side With the Seeds) and an overall attentiveness and groove that is hard to match.
  20. Brought it out for the first time in months. The production is so distinctive, it just sounds great. Also, one of the best rhythm sections in the history of rock. I think the Kotche/Stiratt combo stands up to Jones/Bonham, Lally/Canty, Simone/Hedon, McCartney/Ringo etc. The songs: looking back I find about 89 percent of the material to be entirely engaging. The remainder borders on being a little too vanilla but always redeeming qualities, or moments. I think down the road I'll look back at the album fondly. It seems as of the beginning of my Wilco fan years each of their albums marks
  21. I feel ready for a suprise. Way to go boys.
