The main thing that's been missing in this discussion is that the meaning of a symbol derives from the average cultural perception in the time that it is being viewed. Some dixie scholar can grumble about the "real meaning" of the stars and bars, and his or her opinion counts as part of the conversation, but it is one voice in a large crowd that forms some consensus based on their subjective interpretation of an abstract graphic design. As it happens there are perhaps more Americans that associate the flag with its more negative connotations. If you wave that flag you have to be prepared th

Cool stuff. A little jammier but similar vocal style.

Lovin the tropocalia classics!

Totally. It would have been nice to discuss taking it down from government buildings when life was normal, not when it felt like an impotent gesture after several people died.

That flag was President Davis's banner. He was trying to lead a new, separate country in part of ours. It was to be a country where humans from Africa could still be considered property. He lost. Some people still fly that flag, unpatriotic as it may be. Many of the fliers are ignorant, many are racist, but not all.

I won't argue with a request for more YLT, ever. Also, while they do an admirable job performing tracks like 'Autumn Sweater' live, they're still more 'album songs' than 'live songs'. That one might be a favorite track for a mix tape, but while we're filming in hd I could really go for a romp like 'Deeper Into Movies'.- 119 replies

The impossible list! Top 30 bands/artist for you

Thanks for asking! While Jawbreaker and Jawbox once shared a split 7", they weren't too closely associated with Jawbreaker being a NY/California entity, and Jawbox being a DC group. I love both because they took the punk rock vitality of their respective musical communities and brought it somewhere arguably not in the punk rock mold. Jawbreaker did this through its strikingly poetic lyrics and emotional vulnerability, which was unthinkable at the time of political soapboxing and iron-clad sarcasm and humor. Their lyricist Blake Schwarzenbach could write a Salinger-worthy narrative into a -

I had an opposite take on that. I really liked it. It showed the diversity of the people brought together by music, and I think it was making a statement that the folks participating in an event are just as much a part of what gives it energy and it's unique identity as the groups playing. They did some of those 'intense humanity staring down the barrel of the camera' shots in the Fugazi documentary to similar effect. I think Brendan Canty has long been interested in how that works.- 119 replies

I could just copy your list, except minus Black Coffee and then a hard debate to put either Jealous Again, or Six Pack in it's place.

I'd say that one is one of my favorites. It occupies that critically respected but not overly discussed spot like Dylan's Desire. There's something extra satisfying about slightly lesser known albums by huge career artists. "Deep cuts" or whatever they call it.

She seems to channel everything I love about the original Modern Lovers LP, while being a distinct personality with an undeniably Australian delivery. I think I've listened to "Depreston" a couple dozen times these last couple weeks.

Well, it goes to show that democrats and republicans are politically idiotic in equal turns. While the Dems fall victim to a meandering lack of backbone in office, the GOP seems to like to destroy itself every time the white house has an opening.

All good choices. Neu 1 and Can Tago Mago are the ones I still listen to the most.

Opening acts that blew away headliners
lost highway replied to Doug C's topic in Someone Else's Song
I saw At the Drive In open for this pop punk band called Gob. I'd never heard them, I was there for the headliner but within their 40 minute set they recalibrated my concept of rock music and made the headliners seem obsolete.
