  1. Can we all celebrate Mr. Solace's birfday? Yes, we can!
  2. You all have talked me down for the moment. Thanks!
  3. I almost thought I saw myself there for a second. Seriously though - I'd be all for a reunion tour, even though I think Jimmy should be an essential part of the equation. Him and Warren share an almost telepathic sense - Herring bringing Jerry's more technical side to his playing, and Warren bringing a lot of soul. Together they really do something exciting. Also, it's so nice to see a little camaraderie. The exchange between Phil and Mick makes one almost forget some of the comments from a decade ago ("He must have received the liver of a jerk", etc.).
  4. Very innaresting HH. Was this the first time the band played in SF as a headliner? Cause it must come close to that time frame. I think I've read where Abram recorded lots of stuff from The Matrix. If you've never heard it, there is an LP called Early Steppenwolf that was taken from there on 5/14/67. It's worth hearing for the 21 minute version of The Pusher that is very far out, as the kids say. Thanks for the heads up. Imo though, if the original masters exist and they aren't used it probably shouldn't be commercially released.
  5. Maybe, but giving such a well known guy like Warren a high profile gig like the invocation just rubs me the wrong way (OK, bad pun there). I would think my gay/lesbian friends who went out there and pounded the pavement for Barack would be mightily offended - I know I am. I was really pissed when Bill signed the 'defense of marriage act' (or whatever the hell it was called) back in '96. It was so obviously the politically expedient thing to do considering Bill was up for re-election. Now, once again, the GLBT community have had their wishes of equal rights trampled upon. I know there's no re
  6. No thoughts on this, my peeps? ALSO - I believe Lou brought up the subject (and we discussed) the tinge of disappointment some of us have felt about Barack's appointments to the incoming Administration. I know I've been a bit bummed about it - but I do understand....there's gonna have to be a real bi-partisan effort to confront this shitrain we now find ourselves in. BUT - I think today Barack made a pretty major fuck up by asking the infamous Pastor Warren to deliver the invocation at the Inauguration. He really threw our GLBT brothers and sisters under the bus with this selection. Reall
  7. Less than 2 pages in, and we're already naming the worst shite ever put to tape. Christ.
  8. This is extremely difficult - the 70s were arguably the most diverse musical decade in the history of Rock. I'll try to do this using Mr. H's format of music that was actually on the radio (versus what I might consider my very favorites). Sabbath - War Pigs (yep, peace and love are long gone by 1970) Yes - Roundabout (prog hits the Top 40!) Allmans - Whipping Post (live) gotta have a 20 minute guitar solo song here Elton - Funeral For a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding - one of the best tunes from the master of radio-friendly music Jeff Beck - Freeway Jam (fusion, baby, fusion) Zeppelin - Kashmir
  9. Any list that does not include Whipping Post from the Fillmore East LP should be automatically rejected.
  10. This article may or may not be considered as 'spin'. But I agree, especially considering the current 'revelations' by the current VP. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1208/16558.html And - how about Cheney's statements regarding authorization of /condoning interrogation techniques? If a man openly admits to what, by all accounts, would be considered 'war crimes' is it not a moral imperative for our society to prosecute? Aren't we guilty by association if we don't bust this man's balls? I say yes.
  11. I had a very similar conversation with my mom recently. She sends out cards for everyone she's ever known. I told her if she could break the greeting card habit she could afford her health insurance. I got a birthday card and a Xmas card from her in the mail already this month. She lives about 1 1/2 miles from here. Whaddya gonna say? Back to the topic at hand, we've instituted the following rules here as a money-saving mechanism for the holidays: the tree can only be on between the hours of 6-12 midnight, and everyone gets one toilet-flush in a 24 hour period.
  12. The World Saxophone Quartet - Steppin' (with the WSQ) - 1979 One of my very favorite brain-damaged records. Still a mind blower after 28 years of listening.
  13. Are any apologies necessary? I mean, I'd bet that cat does VERY well for himself.
  14. Oh man, I LOVES me some Clementine! Also, that New Potato from the "Two From the Vault" is one of the best things I've ever heard from the early years. It's a shame they hung that one up. EDIT: I did not realize there are only 3 versions of Clementine (by the GD). There are a couple of really exquisite instrumental takes on some variations of the tune from that Mickey & The Hartbeats show from late '68 (10/30?). Essential listening (I'll bet everyone here knows this already )
  15. Excellent! That 12/19/69 show is no slouch, either. I remember taking those discs with me one time when I had some major dental work done - the doc had headphones there so I was sucking the nitrous and listening to the Other One. I gotta tell ya, dentistry has come a long way over the years!
  16. After reading Aman's post above I just realized that it's been 15 years since DP #1 came out. Wow. I was SO stoked that the maiden voyage was a '73 show - and one I had not heard until that time. I have heard that DP more than any other in the series, I'm guessing. The HC Sunshine HAS to be considered as one of the very best ever versions of that tune. The Playin' is one of the most tightly wound versions I have heard as well - no meltdowns or one instrument going out into space, just two guitars, bass, piano and drums seamlessly interwoven with the song. They are REALLY listening to each ot
  17. Oh, God is playing marbles With his planets and his stars Creating havoc through my life Through his influence on Mars That's why I'm stumbling down the highway On my boots of steel I should be rolling down the skyway On my cosmic wheels Cosmic wheels.. In the present position of the planets It's impossible for me to say Just when I'll find my course again With these boulders in my way I should be rolling down the skyway On my cosmic wheels Instead of stumbling down this highway On my boots of steel I should be rolling down the skyway On my cosmic wheels Cosmic wheels, celestial wheel
  18. I should look up the stats on that Dallas/NYG game. How many sacks were there (both teams)? It seemed like everytime I looked up Manning or Romo was gettin slammed to the turf. Those guys will be sore as hell tomorrow.
  19. FWIW, the jam band road is filled with noodles and extended bits but there are also one-of-a-kind moments of pure brilliance and inspiration. Imho.
  20. I concur about the sartorial splendor of Mr. Van the Man, but I will have to respectfully disagree about the rest of this statement.
  21. I had seen pictures of people shoveling snow off of their roofs before (probably Buffalo?) but I had never done it myself until '07, when we got 2 feet in 24 hours. 6 foot drift on my garage roof (directly above where our boiler sits). It was the biggest blizzard here since '78 - I hope it's another 30 years before that shit happens again!
