I find it rather odd that David would consider 2/5/78 as the cut-off point between '77 and '78. In my mind Spring '77 stands alone as a version of the GD. Fall '77 through Summer '78 is a very much more harder edged, rockin' band (with a lot more distortion than usual) - but directly after Egypt the band seemed to get MUCH more jazzy (which carried over to the early Brent years). Jerry's tone post-Egypt became much cleaner, more "pinched", if you will...and the band as a whole sounded much looser than the more 'in yer face' style they had going 9/77-9/78. I guess everyone has their own take

That 1/23/70 show Other One is really good and psychedelic. If I recall correctly, QMS was over there at the same time. Hank Harrison tells a story of Crosby sailing the Mayan over for those shows, for a load of Maui Wowie and some inspired lunacy.

I remember when Phish was dunzo there was a RS article that proclaimed them to be the "inheritor of the Phish jamband legacy" or some such crap. Like they were gonna get that big. Now that's a really unfair thing to lay on UM, if you ask me. I can see some similarities but Christ there's only one Phish! I'm not a huge fan or anything, but Moe - have you heard their live disc from the Murat here in Indy? Came out a year or so ago. Pretty good stuff. But not the GD or FZ or even Phish - just some decent tunes.
