I like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and, for modern blues, Robert Cray.

Jon Stewart destroys Mad Money's Jim Cramer
uncool2pillow replied to Sir Stewart's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
From today's Wall Street Journal. Link might not work unless you're a subscriber. Let me know. It's a good defense of Stewart's POV. Meanwhile, NBC Exec Jeffrey Zucker defends CNBC against Stewart. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see one specific refutation of what Stewart has said. -

				"rainwater harvesting" -- illegal?
uncool2pillow replied to cryptique's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I imagine this is just the tip of the iceberg as water shortages lead to real problems out west. Tens of millions of people have upped and moved to the desert in the past few decades. How many of them do you think seriously considered the ramifications on the water supply when they did so? -
I liked Friedman's column this morning:

Taking a practical approach, which seems more likely? The billions of religious people around the world will see the error of their ways and join in a secular brave new world or the embrace an ecumenical approach that means treating all people -- religious or not -- equally. Granted, neither seems likely anytime soon. Maker, you must not know too many people who have done charitable deeds inspired by their faith. If so, you would know just how hollow, "a superfluous element that effective bribes otherwise selfish folks into dong selfless deeds..." is.

Top 3 most underwhelming bands/artists you've ever seen
uncool2pillow replied to Mrs. Peel's topic in Someone Else's Song
Speaking of actively hating, I saw a metal band called Balaam and the Angel open for Iggy at the Metro in Chicago in 1988. At first I thought they were there only to piss off the crowd to work them into the kind of frenzy that Iggy would want, but the Wikipedia article says they were label mates back then. I can almost guarantee the only records they sold to Iggy audience members were purchased out of irony. -

Top 3 most underwhelming bands/artists you've ever seen

I'm glad I can say I saw him, but I had the same experience. His backing band was great a traditional 12-bar blues, but his great boogie woogie style was totally lost behind that band. Boom Boom sounded much more like the Yardbirds cover than his version. I saw Bo Diddley around the same time and even though I wasn't as familiar with his catalog (just his beat) his show BURNED. -

I watched this last night. Parts were very entertaining, parts silly. I don't think he's going to change anybody's mind with this movie. He's awfully smug for someone who claims not to be certain. I thought the interview with the British Muslim rapper was interesting. He just didn't get his desire to censor Salman Rushdie while assertively fighting for his freedom of expression is hypocritical. I also like the interview with the skeptic (who I think was a priest) outside the Vatican. His conclusion would have been much more convincing if he had acknowledged any of the good people have d

Let's hope another source pops up, sound quality pretty much stinks. I do like Bob's take on Sitting Still.

I'm afraid such a strong generalization makes you sound a bit like the people who go here. -

Jon Stewart destroys Mad Money's Jim Cramer

I know at least one person who does. She's quite affluent and lives in Omaha, NE. If I was in her position, I'd listen to my neighbor, Warren, and not this nutjob. -

Jon Stewart destroys Mad Money's Jim Cramer

I think Cramer's best strategy is to forget last night ever happened. His hardcore fans will ignore it as Stewart's bias and he'll still have an audience. The rest of us know who he is now. -

I get it, now, kind of. I've had those moments at some of his shows too. Usually, though, he'd pull something out, either a rare song or just pull off some emotional high (or low) that would leave me devastated. -

I'd agree w/ much of this. Sometimes feel awkward, but only for a while. Maybe the 2 beers help that feeling.

Who are the 5 best live bands you've ever seen?
uncool2pillow replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
Which Bob Mould band? Workbook/Black Sheets of Rain, Last Dog & Pony Show, or current incarnation? I was excited when they opened for R.E.M. back in '90 or so because I'd heard so many great things about them, but they pretty much blew. Maybe drunkenly going through the motions as R.E.M. was just hitting their arena-rock peak and the fans had no idea who they were, but I was sorely disappointed. -

Yeah, I agree. If the solo acoustic show was in the 90s, I don't know how it could've possibly been underwhelming. -
Bob has a new album out soon. Decent interview and GREAT video of a damn good new song on Newsweek.

Why do you come to VC regularly? I like to see what's going on in this little corner of the WWW. Music, politics, sports, beer, good times... What do you get out of coming here? Lots of laughs. Good info on music, movies, books. How did you get into VC? I first discovered it after a 2003 Wilco show. I think I joined after my 2nd Wilco show, but started posting regularly about a year ago after the residency. Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? I think they're all pretty damn good. How would you define being a Wilco fan?

50s, superb but overrated because of his race. 60s, mostly crappy movies, comeback was good 70s, a few good singles, but good lord... I wonder what would've happened had he lived. Could he have made another comeback to respectability or would have floundered further into weirdness like his former son-in-law, Michael.

Jay Farrar (love his recorded work, but his show -- solo acoustic w/ 1 guitarist accompanying -- was terrible) Chick Corea Frank Black (shortly before the Pixies reunion)
