  1. Last night was very fun and very uncrowded. Tonight at 7 (first slot) Tortoise is making an appearance, previously unscheduled. Also don't forget Califone and Eleventh Dream Day (and Frequency for jazz fans.) The sound was moderately okay. I think the problem is less the room and more that the sound folks have no clue how to mix for the room. Highlights last night for me, Archer Prewitt, Sea and Cake (rocking out), Firey Furnaces and Fred Anderson. All good stuff. Meanwhile the musicians were all walking around watching other bands. 2. Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end....Steve Albini was saying that the loss of Lounge Ax nearly killed the Chicago music scene. I think that is a vast overstatement. Admittedly LA hosted many many fine bands, both local and national, but somehow those same bands and lots of new ones, get gigs here in town all the same. He said the Chicago music community is just hanging on by its fingernails.....another vast over statement. Personally I am looking forward to the weekday gigs. I think there will be less drunk assholes at those. LouieB
  3. Bend fucking over....terrible isn't it? A remember the days when you could walk up to Lounge Ax and buy a ticket at the bar? So it goes....so it goes.. LouieB
  4. See you all there as many nights as I can stand......(literally not figuratively...) LouieB
  5. For sure...,, It is the best and most accessable. After that Roomsounds (is that right??) is excellent as well. EVerything else is good too, but less accessable and sometimes less successful. LouieB
  6. Actually I am in the middle of watching (not right this minute) The Departed. Not sure it is a great film, but it is a great watch. LouieB
  7. Make sure you tell people you are a viachicagoan, because there are lots of us out there. Guaranteed to help you make friends.... LouieB
  8. Holy Crap!! You saw the Lovin Spoonful? That must mean you are even older than I am. I can't give you any insight into getting from Maine to this show, but I can give you some insight into how shows are these days and how they are different from the 60s and 70s (or not so different in some cases...there were assholes at shows then too). I have an older friend in Boston who IS a Wilco fan and I am sure would take the extra ticket if you wanted. Either way, just go and have fun. Wilco is a great band live and they are at the top of their game (hell I will meet you there...) LouieB
  9. I would say anything you get will be easy to sell. This will be a hot one for sure on a cold night. (several of them) We will need heat out in front of the Riv (and maybe something to share with the street people.... ) LouieB
  10. I was going to go to the Cleveland show until the Chicago shows showed up. (show, show, show...) LouieB
  11. I totally agree. NO side streets for women who are either unaware and alone or not comfortable with the area (or some guys either). I remember when Wicker Park (Double Door area) used to be iffy too, but those days seem to be gone. Uptown, while gentrified still has its moments. (Hell I remember when the area around Metro, Wrigleyville, was iffy as well....) There are some large parking lots in the area and it is better to spend some dough on one than end up on a side street in a bad situation. Besides, parking in Uptown can be pretty tough going. As for GA at the Riv, yea I would thi
  12. Goodness. Uptown is a bit scary, but hardly as scary as it was a couple decades ago and with a big concert in the area, there will be plenty of people on the streets...don't go down and alleys alone and if you are coming alone, park in one of the lots nearby and you will be fine. And remember, if you can't use your pass (or any part of it) I will gladly take any part. LouieB
  13. Considering this movie has been in the works for three decades, it would have made sense to peel off the 65 material into a separate mini film on the DVD in its entirety. Frankly this movie could have been three hours long as a document of all of his performances, but instead the director opted for a more art oriented film instead. Newport 65 was one of the most important and controversial popular music performance of all time and should be intact. Oh well. LouieB
  14. I was half kidding, because I think it is for fans only, but having said that, I have a copy (I think there are a couple versions, but not sure) and have enjoyed listening to some of it alot, mostly the really really old stuff. LouieB
  15. Saw this via Net Flix just this week. Good stuff. Too bad it doesn't include the entire 65 performance. LouieB
  16. Many of his records are available on vinyl used. I bought most of them that way and still see some of them in the used record stores. Hand of Kindness is an excellent RT disk. Small town is okay, but kind of low key, but just him by himself. LouieB
  17. Uh no..........this is the first time they have played a regular show (not Millenium Park) since the beginning of the SBS tour. And I am serious about taking an extra pass off someone if they buy two and can't use one......PM me me...you know my name, look up my number.... LouieB
  18. Does Wilco have five nights of material. I hear alot of jamming coming up..... If someone gets a pass and can't use it I will be happy to take it off their hands, since I won't be by a computer tomorrow. It is tomorrow right?? LouieB
  19. 1000 Years of Popular Music... LouieB
  20. I had not heard that SBS got a nomination....very cool, no matter what happens. LouieB
  21. There was a short rememberance at the hill by Montrose and Lake Shore Drive the week he was killed. Seems like only yesterday to me. louieB
  22. That ain';t no shit.... Vincent is on one of his better known albums. Check out some of the best of compilations or go straight to the Richard and Linda Thompson catelogue, with Shoot out the Lights being one of the stand outs. More later I have to go get bagels. LouieB
  23. Happy Birthday!! Sorry to be late to the party.... LouieB
