  1. Good movie. Got to see it at an opening in Chicago at the Music Box. LouieB
  2. I got myself a ticket to see him at the Old Town School. Well someone else actually got the ticket and is letting me buy it. LouieB
  3. Murray has had a great career. It coudn't be better. I got to see him once at Second City when I first got to Chicago in the early 70s. He was funny back then too, a long time ago. louieB
  4. Is it any wonder Congress can't work shit out? LouieB
  5. This is sad news; as always the guy wasnt that old. Despite his reputation for being a fast guitar player, he didn't want to be known as that. LouieB
  6. Even economists can't figure it out, so for all the rest of us.....its just bullshit in thin air for us too. Its not as if the econmy under all conditions isn't just some confection. One can believe they are right and suddenly it goes all to hell and no one even knows why. So if foks want to dump on the Fed, the government, believe in the free market, etc. Meanwhile the economy is doing kinda crappy for regular folks and just fine for the banks and the corporations. So I can't even figure out who is supporting what here. i'm with Kevin on this one. The econmy tanked when the banks a
  7. Oh good, another extended thread on the Fed. Oh joy. Time to get out of the market now, since HIxter says there is a massive correction coming. Like anyone can actually know this. There was a prediction a couple years ago that the market was going to crash again and it didn't happen. The fact is that it CAN happen any time. You dont have to be a genius to know that the market is flakey. Gold is one thing and the market is another. They aren't even connected. Some are predicting the Dow will reach 20,000. It's all Wizard of Oz territory really. Saying that the market will take a di
  8. The stock market has a history of doing better under Democrats than Republicans. Go figure. Lou
  9. The Johnny Marr is as you would expect, well made, catchy, lots of hooks, and NOT the Smiths. Also I just don't know why he decided on the dark and somewhat unthrilling album design, but at least it came with a digital download. Kudos to Yo La Tengo, who have put our a really solid and enjoyable, if totally predictable album. This seems to be a period when established artists are releasing new material such as Nick Cave and Son Volt; giving VC a bit of a mature buzz for a change. OH yea and Hendrix has a new single coming out? 40 years on!!! LouieB
  10. Very sad. You have to figure that those albums and a couple of the others still sell pretty well. They are back out in print on vinyl I do believe. No matter how much you think people once they hit the big time will actually manage their affaris, they often don't. Then again the fact that they were so influential meant that they took lots of chances and lived pretty close to the edge all along. I guess some of that never disappears even with age. LouieB
  11. Yup, he did direct it, so I guess he can act like an ass if he wants. LouieB
  12. Not working for me. Oh well. LouieB
  13. Can peole chime in on the actual content of thei album? Is it worth getting or should I wait until a used copy shows up at my favorite record store? (Jay Farrar has disappointed the rest of us, so I would like a larger sample of opinions) LouieB
  14. i always seem to be done with this thread, but.... HIxter. - The wars in Iraq and Afganistan when finally added to the deficit helped drive it up. It wasn't counted during the Bush years. KevinG - Of course you disagree with me. I disagree with myself, but the fact remains that our elected officials don't want to really do anything about the deficit that makes sense. I am not being furlowed yet; my program isn't on the chopping block. But that doesn't mean I don't feel for those who are. The US of A is so mired in defense spending that even civilian jobs are at stake when we slash spe
  15. Bought and listened to this new album. It's okay, but it won't make you forget the Smiths. LouieB
  16. Somehow I missed this story, but I heard that her funeral is today. She has been ill for many years, but it is still sad. LouieB
  17. Its gonna be okay, really. I think we need this situation to get every one back on track. I think everyone needs a bit of pain on this. McCain is crowing about the horrible defense cuts and Arne Duncan is weeping about laying off teachers. Most folks don't believe any of it at this point. LouieB
  18. Someday when the Bottle Rockets concert movie is released (who knows when) the footage of Brian discussing the early days of the band is priceless. He is one of the funniest guys ever. LouieB
  19. I am also not a fan of term limits. It sounds good in theory, but if a district has a good congressperson, why not let the voters keep them for as long as they want. LouieB
  20. I am sure this is true, but of course large numbers of people there give a shit about classical music. His name was synonymous back in the 50s and 60s with being a musical prodigy, the same way as people still bandy about Einstein's name. It is sad that his star fell so far after his initial success. LouieB
  21. This is sad. He seemed to fade in his later years. I have a vague recollection of seeing him as a young child at Tanglewood in MA. I only had a vague notion of who he was. He was a true cold war hero to those who care about such things. LouieB
  22. You are right. I don't wish that on anyone, ever. But clearly the politicians who are involved in this don't give a rats ass about any of those people and that is the sad part.We argue about stuff here, ,such as gun control where people's lives are affected every day (Is it Slate that is keeping track of how many gun deaths there are since Newtown??) as do are government funded jobs and programs. But still we hear that government is too involved in people's lives and spends too much money and we should let the private sector do everything. So let's have the government do less for a bit an
