  1. really??? persecuted. really. you think not being able to conduct religious activities at the workplace, when it is a government workplace for a governement that has a constitution that has the separation of church and state is persecution. let's talk persecution: i'm a witch. would it be ok if i conducted my religion at the workplace right after the bible study? huh, i have a really really hard time hearing about christians being persecuted for practicing their faith. did i mention i was a witch, remember the whole burning at the stake, salem witch trials, and oh i don't know in modern t
  2. I haven't read the omnivore's dilemma, but have read other books similar. the commercial food industry is crazy. i was a vegetarian for 10 years, but having discovered a serious food allergy, for health reasons, have had to go back to meat eater status. this whole changing what and how to fix for food has been very enlightening. an interesting tidbit: the healthiest way to grocery shop, shop the perimeter of the store. i think a lot of health problems today go beyond the horrors of the commercial meat packing industry. it's amazing what contains high fructose corn syrup and if they can make
  3. this is very sad and tragic and my heart goes out to all affected. i heard such this morning as well. what i don't understand (ok there are a lot of things, but relative to this): how is it the money can be found to repave the bridge, but not address it's structural integrity. following the bridge story, i heard that bush is pushing for a $ limit on how much should be spent on the new Health Care initiative for children. to connect the two, i find it __________ that we can find the money, endless deficits for some things and let others like infrastructure, health care, and education suffer
  4. maybe it's an east coast southern thing? i've seen it in SC, NC, VA, and was rather surprised to find it in a DC grocery store. they didn't have it in TN though. hmmm. every state should have Duke's then the miracle whip and the hellman's fans would unite loving Duke's.
  5. you ain't had mayo until you've had Duke's mayo! it's a southern thing though. i think miracle whip is immitation mayo, invented during wwII when there was rationing or something like that. i had a salmon bento box with ginger limeade
  6. the elevator in our building is very old and slow and jostles sometimes. reading this thread makes me sweat. maybe i should start taking the stairs, except my office is on the 4th floor and the only stairwell to that floor is a city block away from all other stairwells. rumor has it that if one lapped the building from the 4th floor to the 1st floor while using the stairs, they would have walked a mile. i'll have to start packing my tostitos and salsa.
  7. a trick i like to use for the carry on limit (one bag and one personal item). if you carry a pocketbook, but can't fit everything else you need into your main carry on bag, bring a backpack and tuck the purse into the top of that along with whatever else wouldn't fit in the main bag. then you'll have your main bag, a back pack for extra stuff, and your pocket book for when you arrive at your next destination. it gives you more packing room and still fits the rules. otherwise the pocketbook counts as a bag and they'll make you check something.
  8. i am a bit surprised to see folks balking at the $45 ticket price. it seems to me, the band has made a great effort to keep their ticket prices low and this event is for charity. most bands these days charge an average of $85 a ticket, and let's not forget U2 and Madonna who go into the 3 digit range for bad seats. then there is ticketbastard and their $15 service fees per ticket. most wilco tickets average between $30 and $45 depending on the venue. and a lot of people i know are surprised when they find out the price and comment that it is still affordable. good on wilco! i also think it i
  9. Yay! I'm not alone in the world! I finished it today around noon. Phew! no one i know will answer their phones or talk to me because they haven't finished it yet. i avoided the world until i finished it, no spoilers. i got on mass transit this afternoon after i finished reading it, sure enough there were two women on their discussing. they hadn't finished it though.
  10. thanks for posting about this. looks interesting. i signed up. fun. i'm curious how the cell phone access thing works. i seem to always forget that i own moll flanders when i am in a used book store. i sent friend invites too.
  11. i can't remeber where i heard this or read it, but my understanding of On and On and On is that Jeff wrote it for his father after Jeff's mom died.
  12. this advice has absolutely no medical basis to it. i'm an artist. that's my disclaimer. i'd try a regular regimen of ibuprofen for a few days. it usually helps with swelling of all sorts (and pain). if you don't do well with ibuprofen try aleeve. limit the use of your arm. ice could help, but full blown ice, no bag of peas ice pack or whatever other frozen veggie bags are in your freezer. directly on the area for at least a half an hour (if it is very swollen). or heat for 30 min, movement and stretching for 30 min, and then ice for 30 minutes (again if it is very swollen). comfrey co
  13. here here! bravo! (imagine clapping smiley here)
  14. who knew that nels didn't play on "please be patient with me"?? ok, i'm sure if i'd read my sky blue sky liner notes, but this was an interesting tidbit to hear on the podcast. am at the Scarnella section now, have a ways to go.
  15. oooh oooh oooh, this pic was taken at the merriweather show. actually the whole series of em on the main page was. geeky me.
  16. you know it took me forever to realize that kreacher is simply creature in pronunciation. what a clever play on words. he actually frightened me a bit in the books. had the potential to be quite dangerous (and i wonder if that potential is still there).
  17. yes! and a routine oil change usually doesn't show something really dramatic like a cracked engine or worn ball joints that are extremely dangerous problems and very expensive to fix. a yearly physical would reveal all sorts of things. and the price of health care is not even close to comparable to auto maitenance. $150 for 15 minutes is quite the racket.
  18. wow. i will definitely give it a read then. if anything simply because it sounds like a book one can devour! that's my favorite kind.
  19. i agree about the 3rd movie being the best, but always did like the 4th book the most. what really bothers me about the 4th movie is that they changed the whole house-elf plot thing. it makes one wonder if kreacher really does have a role in the last book or not since you haven't seen the house elves since the 2nd movie and JK Rowling does have input into how the movies are adapted. i don't want to know if there are house elves in the 5th movie. not until i see it. yikes might have to start avoiding the net until i see the 5th movie. will definitely be locking myself away next weekend while
  20. yay, finally someone who has some real sense. the other day Little Bear said i had no taste. ha!
  21. i keep seeing this in book stores and think to myself "i should read that" and then i wonder if it is the same book that Kidsmoke recommended to me and try to make a mental note to do a search for elephants on the board to find out.
  22. the movies start getting much better with the 3rd one and on.
  23. umm, maybe i missed something, but isn't the routine stuff kind of important, like physicals each year. the whole preventative medicine thing. take care of yourself in advance and that will help reduce medical costs because small things that show up in the routine stuff can be treated/taken care of early on before they become big things that take a lot more treatment (and money).?.
  24. oh sorry, did i ruin that for you by taking away some of the movie magic. and congrats on getting through all the books before the 7th one. very nice. to SarahC: it is not bad to have read half-blood prince in two days. you are in the company of others. my goal is to read the 7th book in two days. or sooner. must know how it ends!!!
