I don't find SBS to be one of the better sounding Wilco albums. I have it on mp3, cd, and vinyl. The fact that the mp3's sound nearly as good as the vinyl suggests there is a fair bit of compression in the mastering. OTOH, I do take Tweedy's word at face value, that many tracks were taken "live" at the Loft. With any rock recording this is an extremely hard trick to pull off, as far as achieving great sonics.

It was on Another Fine Day (2006). There's been another album since that. AFD is their only record that really floors me. It's superb.

I'm just surprised to see Montreal, Toronto, Cleveland....and no Detroit?

I got around to listening to the album a few weeks ago. IMHO the first two tracks are the weakest (15 Steps and Bodysnatchers), and are still both very decent songs. The rest of the tracks are just amazing. The only thing that takes In Rainbows down a notch or two from masterpiece status, for me, is the overall feel - or maybe just the sequencing; it doesn't quite feel 'whole'. Great tunes but they add up to ____? It could very well be that's what they were going for...rather than satisfied, the listener comes away feeling mildly disturbed. Dexter is a great show. Season 2 was hugely entertaining, and had a satisfying ending.

Well, I can answer my own question now. Biggest disappointment - Blood On The Slacks. After last year's amazing Another Fine Day, it would be hard for Golden Smog to put something comparable out....especially since AFD had 15 good or great songs, it's not like there would be a ton of leftovers to cull from. But BOTS feels like a throwaway, or maybe fulfilling a contract obligation. Bland, mediocre, and uninspired. 8 songs, only one or two interesting tunes.

I meant to ask, how did people like Golden Smog's release? I'm just about to play it for the first time. I was lukewarm on their 90's stuff..just too alt-country or something. But I LOVE Another Fine Day. They seem to do better with less of Tweedy, though I could be wrong on that.

Yeah, my wife has the same reaction to Lucinda. I agree that West isn't a great album, and that Lu's releases have gone (gradually) progressively downhill since Car Wheels. Country music needs her, though.

Another lousy list. Where's Ryan Adams, Interpol, The National.... Mark Knopfler? Besides that Icky Thump should be #1, period.
