  1. He just strikes me as someone particularly ill-equipped to deal with fame. He overshares and freaks out, overshares and freaks out. I'm cool with it as long as he keeps making good music. Hell, even if he doesn't. I was thinking last night, what if he really did pull a Yusuf Islam and just walk away from it all for a while? Might be good for him.
  2. I actually really like Riot Act, save for a few songs ("You Are"...*shudder*). But I only fell in love with that record after hearing it live. I rarely listen to the records at all anymore; I'd rather listen to boots. solace, a friend of mine was side stage at a few of the East Coast shows last summer and she said the one thing that really stood out was Matt's drumming; she's an Irons devotee, but definitely gained a new appreciation for Matt. So maybe he's doing something different these days, who knows. He definitely opens it up a bit more in the live show. Think we got a tour comi
  3. So is it usually a GA show, with a reserved GA area in front, or do they put in actual seats? I've only been to one seated show at the Vic, ever.
  4. See, I was all worried for nothing.
  5. Some awesome names added today: http://sxsw.com/music/shows/bands/ the Black Angels, Blue Giant, Common Market, the Drams, Tim Finn, Glossary, Sebastien Grainger, Grand Archives, Grizzly Bear, Handsome Family, Ed Harcourt, Horse Feathers, the Long Winters, the Mae Shi, Ohbijou, Pop Levi, Salt & Samovar, Tallest Man on Earth, Throw Me the Statue, Tulsa, Viva Voce...
  6. Hm. Yeah, I guess so. I didn't really care for Easy Tiger either, because it felt kind of lazy, IMO. Cold Roses, on the other hand, I loved, probably because it was so sprawling, and the Dead influence was a bit of a departure too, which was nice.
  7. Well that's, like, your opinion, man I'd say it's a little bit of both.
  8. Bobby Womack, Wanda Jackson and Spooner Oldham! Sweet.
  9. You can download the track "Seven Mile Island" here: http://rcrdlbl.com/2009/01/14/exclusive_ne...ven_mile_island
  10. I hear ya cluckin. Ryan talked a lot about wanting the spotlight on the band rather than on him personally. But I think he knew he was hiding behind them, and that stifled his creativity.
  11. Well, that's the thing, I guess...I'm not necessarily looking for an artist to make HUGE changes either. And certainly those who do make huge changes aren't always successful. But when I hear a new record from an artist I like, I don't want to feel like I already own that record, or its equivalent. And that's just the feeling I get here. Yes, there are some tweaks in the production, and yes, there are a couple standout songs, but overall, it sounds like more of the same. I would make the same argument for Cardinology. It's a good record, but it doesn't cover any new ground sonically; IMO
  12. Probably Jane's Addiction, Nothing's Shocking. I got it for my twelfth birthday, along with Paula Abdul's Forever Your Girl. Things could have turned out very differently.
  13. Okay, so based on your recommendation, I listened to Duet for Guitars #2 this morning, and followed it up with the new record. I liked Hold Time better than I did on first listen. But I have to say I kind of prefer Duet. While it lacks polish, I think the rawness of the recording really works with the bare-bones song structure. *shrug* I dunno. I can appreciate the production on Hold Time, but that doesn't mean I like the record, if that makes any sense. To me, it sounds like the same old M. Ward song structure, just gussied up. And this is admittedly a quibble, but I don't think an
  14. I'll say. Now I kinda feel like a jerk for asking, but, uh...the Tulsa show's still on, right?
  15. Oh hell YES. My friend just turned me on to Clem Snide, I'm so excited to see they're touring!
  16. True that. I don't think we even knew who the headliners were at this time last year. Any of the smaller names you'd recommend? I've checked out Alela Diane a bit since she's opening for Blitzen Trapper this spring. She's not bad, reminds me a bit of Jesse Sykes. And I've heard good things from friends about Dear and the Headlights.
  17. Ah, you're right. Well, the same sentiment applies to the record generally, IMO. I like M. Ward. Heck, I'd say I like him a lot. But at this point I'm thinking, do I really need another M. Ward record? I'm not sure I do. I feel like I've already heard all he has to offer. I do think artists need to grow and to reinvent themselves. Yes, that means there will be hits and misses, but I think artists need to challenge themselves as much as we listeners need to be challenged.
  18. Hate to say it, but I have to agree. I finally woke up around "Epistemology". Great tune. I like what he does, generally speaking, but I think you could place any of these tracks on any of his records. I just don't see any growth. I liked Lucinda's contribution, though. I think Matt has a fairly throaty/gravelly voice at times, so I think they're a good match. "Outro" is very pretty, too.
  19. Yeah...those are most of the names I recognized, too. It's just a little disappointing since so many of them have been through town recently, or will be here soon.
  20. Thanks! I'm still not seeing a ton of stuff that tickles my fancy, though... Anything on there you'd recommend?
  21. Bumpin' this old thread. Anyone else making the trek this year? I have to say the lineup isn't as appealing as last year's, at least not yet: 8Ball & MJG (Memphis, TN) Akron/Family (Williamsport, PA) Al Kapone (Memphis, TN) Alina Simone (Brooklyn, NY) Amanda Blank (Philadelphia, PA) Amber Smith (Budapest, HUNGARY) Angry vs The Bear (Essex, ENGLAND) Anni Rossi (Chicago, IL) Anthony Snape (Sydney, AUSTRALIA) ARABROT (Oslo, NORWAY) Arc Angels (Austin, TX) Asher Roth (Morrisville, PA) Asobi Seksu (Brooklyn, NY) Astrid Williamson (Shetland Islands, SCOTLAND) B.o.B. (Atlanta, GA) Banda de
  22. It's just the presale selling out, though, right? I thought the general onsale was on the 24th. Probably not a great idea to try to do all the presales at the exact same time.
