  1. Ok, I did it, I figured if I was going to bad mouth Neil I at least needed to listen to this new album and not just assume. Not to reward my intuition, but this is plain embarrassing. My fear is that my best friend (who can't stand Neil Young) will use this as evidence against me as why he sucks. I will have no defense. It makes you wonder what Neil is hearing on playback while recording this thing. I mean seriously, how can you put out a song like "Cough Up the Bucks" with a straight face. I hope this is a joke and that Neil is sending refund checks to anyone who purchases this!
  2. If you didn't go out and buy a shaker after hearing Screen Door then you are lying.
  3. No I haven't seen the "new" Son Volt live. I stopped going to see Jay after a few shows during his solo tours. I'm basing my opinion on the recorded output. I know it was a strong thing to say, but IMO I feel sad for how much I believe he has lost it. I'm glad he is still connecting with some people, but it isn't me (and that I guess is ok). I don't know, you listen to Trace and Straighaways and there was an undelrying theme I could feel. No I didn't understand every line, but I understood emotionally what was being said. His new stuff just seems like pretenious word salad. Sometimes ev
  4. At one time Jay was tops in my mind. I was one who loved going to see Son Volt During the first three album stretch. What a tight machine like band. (my favorite moment from a Son Volt concert was when Jay started laughing after playing the harmonica solo leading up to the start of Medicine Hat, it was like he was saying "I know that is absurd" ) I consider the Son Volt "Retrospective" essential for anyone who cares about music. Now that being said, his solo albums are interesting but indicate a man losing his touch and going through some kind of identity crisis. The reformed Son V
  5. Kind of hit and miss but "Frankies Gun" and "Wonderful Life" are amazing.
  6. He's the poster child (at least recently) for the opposite impact of the whole "artistic freedom" issue between record companies and artists. I think Reprise is so scared to stand up for what they may believe due to past issues with Neil and bad press from the whole Wilco issue. I've yet to listen to this entire album, but after trying to listen to Chrome Dreams II, Living w/War I can only imagine how awful this is. It makes me think less of Neil and I consider myself a pretty hardcore fan. Crap is crap and record companies do not have to appease him just because he is Neil Young. And wh
  7. I hate when I don't understand someone's reply?
  8. As far as their recorded history, I can't complain (I'm one of the Sky Blue Sky lovers). I'll admit that they probably peaked as far as orginality and defining themselves around Summerteeth/YHF, but I see no significant decline to the point of having to bow out. I think I know the concern you are verbalizing, but I think it would take a really awful record to tarnish the legacy. And I kind of don't care about legacy, Wilco's records will always mean alot to me, and I think they a have a few records that will always be held in high esteem by the critics no matter what happens. Now my onl
  9. I'm sorry. Someone please send Cortez some new free music to give him something else to listen to.
  10. I have heard this before, about Pedal Steel being the worst for some people. It amazes how different us humans can be. For me any half ass song that features a pedal steel becomes worth listening to.
  11. I mentioned lil wallet picture by Buckner so I should mentioned the player who I believe was Eric Heywood (of course he was behind alot of the Son Volt pedal steel) Lloyd Maines Eric Heywood Sneaky Pete Ben Keith? (is that right Neil Youngs)
  12. Just an FYI, www.aquariumdrunkard.com posted mp3's for ACL 9/17/07, for those who aren't into the fancy trading stuff.
  13. Lil Wallet Picture - Richard Buckner No Sense In Loving - UT
  14. Just an FYI, at least one source is indicating that there will be a Whiskeytown 7" of two unreleased songs on record store day. Just thought I'd post since I haven't seen this listed on discussion here.
  15. non wilco: The Avett Brothers "If It Is The Beaches" 3/4 through the song when the piano enters when they sing "if it is the beaches" all acoustic until that moment, amazing
  16. We have a winner! I hope!
  17. Were they drugged up and kidnapped in order to make this video? A few nice touches, like Tweedy having a stethoscope hanging around his jean jacket! Also for you ladies, Jeff shows a lot of leg in this video. This is definetly worse than jumping out of airplanes, because at least they were acting goofy on that video. On Shot in the Arm they are trying to be serious, I think!
  18. Is it just me or is Rolling Stone starting to treat Tweedy like rock royalty? It seems like they have been on him like flies on crap lately. Don't get me wrong, I think it is cool for Tweedy to be placed in this light, but just wierd.
  19. It is crazy but I love Jason's contributions to DBT, but have found the few tracks of both solo albums I have heard completely second rate. That being said, having lived in Alabama for about 6 years, hearing a song like Never Gonna Change is pretty powerful. He hit that nail on the head, and it never fails, that song gets stuck up in my brain for days at at time. Amazingingly awesome song.
  20. The jewell of my record collection is a pristine copy of Woody's Folkways Songs To Grow On. I got for 20 bucks, went home and looked in a price guide "Wowee Zowee" Little sack o sugar eat you up!
  21. The old perspective arguement. It is the difference between being imprisoned in actuality, living in "my own prison", or feeling competely disconnected due to previous reference from a Creed album.
  22. I guess it is hard to wrap our heads around all of the nuances of this discussion, but one thing is obvious, and that is the fm radio dial is useless. What is the point, and who are the masses supporting the same 40 country songs, the same 40 pop songs, the same 100 classic rock songs? Who can honestly tune in regularly to the same old same old day after day. I could honestly care less at this point if FM Radio and the clear channels of the world go bye bye. I probably have listened to non talk radio for 1 hour in the last 3 months. It is so bad, I completely don't care. I have my ipod,
  23. OMG! Where will I get the most updated photos of Fergie in skimpy outfits?
  24. I guess that is my point. In context there is nothing stupid or necessarily pretentious about that title. My first impression was of that however.
