  1. he was on Postal Blowfish in the 90s and maybe into the '00s. quite a character. polarizing.
  2. The Stooges at The Orpheum, 2007. this was the 2nd time seeing them, and it was a better venue than the first (first was inside the courtyard of Dublin Castle; this was an old seated theater). the seats didn't matter, since no one used them. we had great seats....3rd row center, right on the aisle. at the third song, security said he was gonna jump off the stage and onto the aisle, but he changed flight plans and landed in the seats to my left a few songs later, he would jump down to the aisle, and soon i was staring face to face w/ the legend, spit on his bare chest and screaming lyrics
  3. My wife's uncle has a house there and we've been down twice. Really great place. Los Cerritos is a fantastic beach.
  4. if they end Sunday, that's your perfect scenario.
  5. i wasn't proselytizing, merely trying to make sense of the dichotomy. wrt the bolded section, i know MMJ sets can be long, but at a festival like this they'll probably have 90 minutes, so it's not a lot of time to find something else to do outside the festival.
  6. certainly no guarantee. but in my limited data set of friends, it's a very strong Venn Diagram between liking MMJ and Wilco. and don't get me started on anti-Dead sentiment...i've got work to do today you know.
  7. it's pretty surprising to see the anti-MMJ sentiment,
  8. they have some top level songs. one big holiday run thru dondante mah geetah golden dancefloors hell, i even like holding onto black metal. they're playing Boston Calling so if they don't play SSF i'll still get to see them.
  9. who knew that Miranda Lambert put out such a well-regarded album?
  10. new track from Pan American (Mark Nelson, ex-Labradford) https://soundcloud.com/geonorth/01-the-terrace?in=geonorth/sets/panamerican-sketch-for-winter-ii-rue-corridor
  11. i would agree w/ that listing, though wouldn't put MH at #2
  12. for me it's a tie for Owen Meany and Cider House Rules. maybe this soundtrack will help? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-jp4hk7VIU
  13. Mayhem and Watain. pure black metal on a cold winter night.
  14. he is, but still it's basically electrified blues (see B Booker, Reignwolf) which i guess counts as an indigenous american music form. i guess my point is that SSF is just so broader in scope. hell, i got to see Pillow Wand!
  15. to me, i can't answer that. w/ Jay Sweet (and presumably others at Paste) doing the booking, i find it much less adventurous than what Solid Sound has to offer (though it's clearly not your father's Folk Festival, either). that said, it was cool seeing stuff like Kurt Vile, Benjamin Booker and Reignwolf playing last year. i'm just not sure how far off the beaten folk path NFF will go.
  16. i think Korbel is already in discussions.
  17. the programming at NFF is pretty solid, but overall i prefer SSF. the vibes are similar...lots of white people, some w/ kids. it's easier to get closer to the main stage at NFF since there is a lot of stuff going on all day. and there's a NO CHAIR zone in the center which is nice, something SSF should consider. biggest drawbacks to NFF: finding a place to stay getting in and out of the stage fort grounds only being able to drink beers in isolated pens, far from the music.
