  1. 8 years ago wilco put out their best album (well, i prefer AGIB - but YHF was a big leap in quality and relevancy for the band) - so it's good to know that it was easier getting kids to like them back then - it means the kids do like the best stuff! wilco really aren't very relevant anymore, and i feel they aren't very good (which is, i know, my opinion - but the relevancy thing is just a fact). their early work was only relevant within a specific genre which (whilst being great) wasn't exactly of it's time, so when they actually hit a purple patch it was natural that young kids would gravitat
  2. i don't understand a lot of the lyrics literally, i just get the sense of what they are about. actually that's normally how i approach music - dylan would be a good example of that, where i don't know what he means a lot of the time, but i get the sentiment/feeling. when i listen to music i tend to spot bad lyrics very easily, whereas good lyrics wash over me a lot more. so, i couldn't tell you what most of the songs are really about, either (well not in any great detail, anyway) - i just really like them. i do like it a lot. it's just i actually feel like i'd rather play devotion than te
  3. ariel pink & joanna newsom are really the only 2 albums i've thought were great this year, so far that is! the national is alright - get's a bit much after a while, and i'd rather listen to the tindersticks musically whilst listening to that same kind of vocals. also, beach house is very good - but i do prefer devotion somewhat. oh, deloreon - subiza is ok too. oh oh, and big echo by the morning benders - i liked that as well.
  4. you know, i agree we were shit, but, saying the german's could have been 4 goals up by the time of the disallowed goal means nothing at all - unless the 4 goals they should have been up went in the back of the net and then were not counted. 2-2 would have been very very different, and the game could have gone in england's favour, there's no way really of knowing that. it also wasn't a hopeful slash, it was a very good shot - the only one he made in the whole tournament. i think the chances would have been, if they'd allowed the goal, that we'd have gone another goal down, but i doubt 2 more wo
  5. ...actually, i can't stop. what about homer banks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RxPVr4wYGg you can get a compilation of all his songs (he never released an album - spanning late 60s into the 70s)
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9gMLRk_1j8&feature=related charlie whitehead aka raw spitt (album "raw spitt") - a swamp dogg production. that'll do for now. i've got plenty more!
  7. just been having a think about this, and here's a few of my favourites from the 70s. to be honest, i think the 60s was slightly better, well the early 70s is great, it just gets a little too polished by the very late 70s for my taste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9U3XHaSw-Y from his best album (just before he went to hi records) memphis unlimited (this is actually the sort of sound i'd love to hear wilco try - listen to that fuckin' rhythm section!) then there is this album can't find any youtube clips for any of the songs - but it's a fantastic album. his last great one, until he c
  8. seriously? they look horrible. it's the stripes down the arm that look cool on the spanish away kit. cameroon look a little bit like stevie wonder styled them.
  9. yeah, lambchop do a great version of I've Been Lonely For So Long on the album What Another Man Spills
  10. Spain will win, I'm willing to put down 100 fake internet dollars to that effect. If nothing else, they have the best football kit in the whole of the competition. http://www.soccerbible.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles/football-shirts.features/spain_5F00_away_5F00_team_5F00_1.jpg actually, it's their away kit - but it still looks cool
  11. i think he was apologising for something he did earlier in the game - the ball came into the box and he put his leg up rather high (which is fine in that situation) to score, but hit the goal-keeper instead. also, all this talk of cheating. the whole game of football involves cheating. it really is the most appalling game in that respect. think of the term "good sport" or "sportsman-like" and then look at football - it doesn't fit.
  12. I was hoping this was going to be a "where's wally/waldo?" type thread. Led Zeppelin ruled the 70s. or Brian Eno if we're talking "cool". Bowie was in Extras, acting (although it was crap - not his fault though, i guess) - that's the last time I've seen him
  13. I just found a copy of that on ebay for £4.99! Thanks for pointing that out! I've got Action! and Intensified - so it's good to get hold of this! Also, another band i forgot to mention that i love are The Heptones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61-wvKc46B4
  14. lucky for us, Bob Marley explains here: that's if you can understand him
  15. you need to get yourself into PopTodd's "rocksteady" thread. although, he should rename it to incorporate a few other styles. what is that Desmond Dekker? a compilation? np.
  16. I watched a couple fo the new ones, and I still think it's a train-wreck (the first episode and the last episode, actually, were the ones i saw). The new Doctor is a million times better than David Tennant - so that is not the problem, I find the problem is the appalling storylines - or rather the way they are told. It's done at such a pace most of the time that it doesn't have any tension at all, it just makes it seem paper thin. Also, they seem to have to stick in plot developments with a crow-bar, because they're not willing to alter the pace. I'm trying right now to think about what those
  17. Is that the deluxe version? If you enjoy that you should get Struggling Man next. Also, i think i've said this before, but Monkey Man is the other great Toots & The Maytals album worth getting your hands on. If you get that version i've linked you to it's got a whole bunch of bonus tracks - some you'll already have, but a lot you won't (if you've never heard Monkey Girl - for example - you're really missing out. actually all those bonus tracks are incredible, and that's not even taking into account the fantastic album you get as well). You'll probably find it very hard to find any goo
  18. I had bought a few of the stereo remastered cds, and downloaded a flac version of the mono boxset, at the time. But, I've ended up buying the mono box set - now it's cheaper - and selling the stereo albums (apart from Let It Be, Abbey Road & Yellow Submarine - which I was sent by a mistake and kept! - the beatles gods were shining on me that day, cos i can't imagine any other way i'd have got the album). To me the stereo mixes just got me annoyed that they weren't mono - I'd be listening with clenched teeth! Also, the quality of the cd cases etc... was shit when compared to the mono box se
  19. whilst this is obviously true, surely it's so obvious that it's not worth saying. did you mean, an average band with a great drummer? i think having Larry Campbell on lead guitar helps. i wish he'd get back with dylan!
  20. can't say i like 10 of his albums, the ones i do like a lot are: 01 Around The World In A Day 02 Sign O The Times 03 Purple Rain 04 1999 then there are these: 05 Prince (this is a 50/50 one for me) 06 Controversy (don't like this one much, but i do love "jack u off") edit: shit, forgot Parade - that'd be 5th on that list
  21. put whatever albums you like best. it doesn't matter how old they are. as long as you don't put Wilco (The Album) in!
  22. it's a great album. you might find it hard to find it as "Jimmy Cliff" - it was also called "Wonderful World, Beautiful People". (check the tracklisting on whatever you buy, cos his stuff is like Toots & The Maytals - there are a lot of titles with the same names). "Struggling Man" is the other of his albums i'd say is great.
  23. wow, you're right. i always thought it was ranking. i looked this up, and these are the fifa rules: The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows: a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches; goal difference in all group matches; c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches. If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows: d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned; e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the
