  1. 2008 BCS Prediction: Vanderbilt (5-7) inexplicably vaults over everybody to play LSU in the title game. ESPN proclaims it the best championship matchup in years. When asked for comment about the snub, Pete Carroll responded "Hey, dude, that's not cool." and a stoic Jim Tressel praised the "mighty tough" Vanderbilt team and continued to insist that we don't need a playoff.
  2. I was about to rebut you by pointing out that they play at USC next year, but then I noticed the schedule also includes Y'town St, Ohio U, and Troy. Even so, the thing most weighing down the schedule is the overall suckitude of the rest of the Big Ten. There are a bunch of teams that are "due" for a good year. It would be nice if those games against Penn St, Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Sparty, etc, actually started to mean something again. The bitch of it is that next year was really supposed to be the year they made a run at it. This year they ended up there mostly by accident. Now after
  3. I'm hoping somebody figures out how to defend the spread by then.
  4. For Sale: One Sweater Vest Slightly used, mostly excellent condition. Has holes that get exposed every January, otherwise great. I really thought that Tressel would have learned from last year's experience (and from Michigan's success against Florida this year) that you can't sit back and play prevent defense for four quarters and expect to win. WTF? I was cautiously optimistic after the first quarter. Beanie was running well all signs were pointing to a good game. I went upstairs to put my daughter to bed as OSU was lining up for that field goal in the 2nd quarter. I never saw
  5. I wonder how often recruiters get asked "Aren't you guys still under the Death Penalty?"
  6. I still don't really get June Jones going to SMU. Sure, there's money, facilities, and easier access to recruits...but reviving that program is one heck of a challenge.
  7. OSU started off somewhere in the teens, if I recall. They were predicted to finish 3rd or so in their conference. They haven't exactly been the media darlings this season. Preseason polls are pretty stupid, though.
  8. Kansas gets no slaps from me. I was a doubter most of the year, but they had a solid season and they backed it up by winning their bowl game. Can't really ask for more than that. As for whom is the best team--well, I agree its pretty muddy, though. But I think its also pretty difficult to argue that the two teams who spent the most time ranked #1 all season aren't the best choices to play each other. I dunno. A playoff would be nice. In the meantime I'll take my commemorative beer coaster. And, MJHutch.......thanks.
  9. OSU--the new Rodney Dangerfield of college football. Jeez, you get your ass handed to you in one lousy game and nobody lets you forget about it. I'm just enjoying the ride. There is some palpable angst in the Columbus air today--and that's not just the usual stench coming off our beloved Olentangy River. Everyone is glad to see them back in The Game, but there is some concern. This is a good football team, but even as a fan I don't know that I'm convinced they are a dominant team. This year was supposed to be about finding a new offense and gaining confidence and ending the year with f
  10. Agreed that the schedule was pretty lame this year. There's a gap this year between home-and-home series with Texas and USC, so this year we got...Washington. Hey, this was supposed to be the year they re-established themselves. Don't blame OSU that it didn't happen. The other "in-state-rivalry" cupcakes are no different than what every other major program schedules, they just look more conspicuous than usual because the Big Ten had a down year, overall. Really, the thing that gives me the greatest hope for tonight's game is remembering the Penn State game early in the season. PSU didn'
  11. I like that song more than I ever dreamed I'd be liking any new Crowes material anymore. The last album of theirs I really liked was Amorica. This made me smile, so I guess that's a promising sign for the album.
  12. January 3, 2003 January 8, 2007 January 7, 2008 GO BUCKS!!!
  13. SMU? Ew. Sure, Hawaii is a bit isolated from the rest of the sports world, but I would think he'd hold out for a better offer than SMU.
  14. I got an iTunes gift card for xmas and I downloaded the "Steppin' Out" set with it and I am loving the hell out of this. I only saw the GD once in concert--1990 at RFK. God bless the internet. I'm going to have to go back and re-listen to that show. To be honest, at the time I wasn't that big of a fan--I was young and just growing out of my hair-metal phase and getting into stuff like the Allman Bros and such, and so I think I was more there just to see what the fuss was about.(and my friend I was with was a huge fan) Having not been around for the earlier years, I didn't really know wh
  15. This was my thinking when I voted for Nader in 2000. I figured Gore had the election in the bag anyway--and thought Bush seemed like a benign enough nitwit at the time that he couldn't do much damage if elected. And I thought Gore ran an awful campaign, so I voted for Nader largely as a "statement" vote about my ambivalence to the whole thing. Things didn't work out so well. I don't entirely disagree with your cynicism about the two major parties, but in my mind there certainly is such a thing as the lesser of two evils, if that's how you choose to look at it.
  16. Is this the show where they handed out the free iPod accessories?
  17. I've been meaning to check out that Blitzen Trapper record. I wasn't too into new music this past year, but it is hard to go wrong with a description like that. Or, I guess I could just listen to The Grateful Dead, Sonic Youth, Royal Trux, Golden Smog, The Minus 5, Pavement, Elephant 6 pop-psychedelia--which is pretty much what I've been doing for the past year anyway.
  18. We spent considerably less on gifts this year. I think, anyway. Our family is larger, so there are more people to buy for--so maybe it wasn't that much lower. But the gift-per-capita ratio was pretty low this year.
  19. Agreed. That certainly didn't look like the same d-line that OSU pushed around all day a few weeks ago. The offense looked pretty good too, despite the turnovers. At least they were aggressive all day. That was the kind of gameplan I wish OSU would have executed last year against UF.
  20. The Illini aren't looking much better so far.
  21. I once had tickets to a John Mellencamp concert and showed up and found out it was canceled--turned out he'd had a heart attack. There was also a NYE show, 98 or so--I think it was G. Love. My longtime gf and I had broken up for good like 2 days before, but decided to try going as "friends". Very awkward. Especially the part when midnight came and we both made a show of kissing as many random strangers in front of each other as we possibly could. Good thing we were mature about the whole thing. Probably should have just stayed home and eaten the loss on the tix.
  22. 2007 was actually pretty good to me, for the most part...but major vibeage to those of you who are looking for a change in your luck.
  23. Reviving a topic from a page or two back, I downloaded the Sunshine Daydream movie and just gave it a first viewing and have to agree with all the descriptions I've read. That kind of scene seems so alien these days. Having been born just a few years too late to experience anything that, its kind of hard to believe that it existed at all. A very neat thing to watch. Thanks for the tip, guys.
