  1. I used to listen to Portishead all the time in college in a "its late and I have studying to do" kind of way. Good stuff, but I guess I don't see 'em getting the party started for the festival crowd.
  2. I am only recently on the MMJ wagon. For a long time I thought all you guys here who gush about them were crazy--all I had heard was "Z", and I agree that I didn't think there was anything too special about it. (I have since come around somewhat on it) But then at some point I picked up "At Dawn", and that one has been one hell of a grower. I keep coming back to it and falling even more in love with it. Not only that, but it might actually be my favorite Neil Young album!
  3. Stocks are plunging, eh? Whew, good thing I can't afford to have much of a portfolio or else I might be really worried! Currently I am gathering sheep and preparing to bring back the barter system.
  4. When my nephew was probably a year and a half old, there was a family vacation type thing where our families ended up sharing a hotel room. My nephew had a cold and so the VaporRub was applied to his chest in hopes of clearing up some of his congestion. Not only did it clear him up, but it also had the effect of a triple-espresso on him and he was shouting "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" at the top of his lungs for what seemed like hours. It was hysterical, but if you value your sleep, you may want to take warning from this story.
  5. That thing looks suspiciously like a Doomsday Clock to me. Yo, Jesus, should we be worried about this?
  6. I didn't watch the NY/GB game, but the Patriots have definitely looked vulnerable at times lately. For a while there yesterday I thought the Chargers were going to field-goal them to death. I was hoping the Pack would win yesterday, but at least ESPN should be happy about having a NY/Boston matchup to tide them over until baseball season.
  7. I had not heard of this, but it sounds like it could be funny...or not. But for some reason the word "Festeroo" makes me laugh, so now I want to see this.
  8. Throw another Dave on the fire for me. Loved em when they were starting out--by the time they had reached mass-popularity, the magic was gone.
  9. I've been listening to the soundboards from the 7/14/2007 (acoustic) show in Austin and the 9/21/2007 (electric) show in Toronto. I haven't listened to enough other recent shows to know where they rank among his last tour, but if there are better shows out there I'd love to hear them. The sound is amazing on these, too.
  10. Ryan only took me about a decade to get into. I really don't even care about the personality thing, but I've been hearing about what a genius he is for I don't even know how long--and then every time I go check out an album, my typical reaction is "Eh, this is okay." Heartbreaker is good, Gold has a few moments, I only heard the first Whiskeytown album which I couldn't really get into, and I pretty much wrote him off after the first Love Is Hell EP. I figured I just wasn't ever going to get it. But then I had a co-worker who was a fan and I "borrowed" Cold Roses and liked it--and then I we
  11. It would be humorous if this guy pulls a Ron Pawlus after all this hype. [edit] ...but not so humorous if he goes to OSU and flops.
  12. No dice for quarter23cd, so here's shortened to q23
  13. Eh, Monster has always seemed like kind of a waste to me. I don't think I've ever been contacted back from a job I actually sent a resume to through Monster. I have, however, had several calls of the "I saw your resume on Monster..." variety. Most of these have been recruiter/headhunters, a few legit jobs that frequently have almost nothing to do with my skill set, and a few really shady sounding things. Honestly, I've had my best success the old fashioned way--through local newspapers. Not even the "big" papers--sometimes the little community rags that you normally throw away--sometimes
  14. Three Snakes was actually the album where I jumped off. There are some great individual tracks, but as a whole it never grew on me. By Your Side I've only heard a few times, but probably the same deal. Lions I heard once and didn't care for it.
  15. Nice to see Laurinaitis coming back for his senior season. Looks like the only early departure is Gholston, which is a huge loss, but not unexpected. This OSU defense should be something special next year. Too bad they'll likely get the Hawaii-treatment even if they go undefeated, after the way they closed out the last two years. Familiarity breeds contempt. Too bad. On paper, at least, this team looks to be a pretty legit contender. That OSU/USC game early in the sesson is going to be huge. I think it is a healthy sign that I'm already excited about next year. After last year's BCS
  16. I think this is some unfortunate truth to this. I have trouble listening to much new music. And its not entirely that I'm not interested in the music being made, but something about it (the production?) is making it unlistenable to me. This is new territory for me, since I have never really considered myself much of an audiophile. I'm going to use an example that might make some people mad, but one thing that has bothered me recently me is that although I love Greg Dulli and the old Afghan Whigs records, I hate hate hate the Twilight Singers records. On the surface, there isn't a whole l
  17. That's pretty weak that two whole regions of the grid are sadly unrepresented. C'mon, somebody's gotta show some love to the lower-left and upper-right. My results tell me I'm an Obama man, although I have an equal "substantive agreement" with Edwards and Richardson, as well. So much for being decisive.
  18. Pryor: Yo, Coach T, if you let me play basketball I'll show you how to defend a spread offense. Tressell: Oh, thank god!!!1!
  19. Steal Your Face (on CD) was one of the first purchases I made when I started getting into the band in the early 90s. I've never heard the vinyl, but its true that the CD sounds absolutely horrible. I remember having to turn the volume waaaay up just to hear it and then it was kind of hissy. But no doubt there are some killer tunes on there. There are a number of songs here that went on to become among my absolute favorites, and this is where I heard them first as a new fan and fell in love with them: Stella Blue, Half-Step, Ship of Fools, Black-Throated Wind, Sugaree, It Must Have Been th
  20. How do you know he didn't talk with him? I agree that it seemed a little hasty when rumors of his transfer surfaced almost immediately after Rod was named as coach, and I'm sure I'd be agitated, too, if I were a UM fan. It sucks to see talent walk out the door. But, especially if they do sign Pryor--or any other recruit suited to that style of offense--I'm sure as Mallett learned to run a "modified spread" he'd be looking over his shoulder at the guy on the sideline who can run the real deal and is inevitably going to take his place, or at the very least split time in the not so distant fut
  21. That was what I was just thinking--should Mallett's departure be read as a hint that Pryor is coming? Conversely, there were similar rumors swirling around OSU when it was reported that 2nd string QB Rob Schoenhoft was transitioning to tight end, apparently permanently. There is probably no connection to any of it--just speculation. Does UM currently have a QB that would be a good fit for Rodriguez's style if Pryor doesn't come there?
  22. Agreed. The this-team-beat-this-other-team-who-beat-someone-else-and-is-therefore-better-than-this-other-team annoys me to no end.
  23. Probably photoshopped, but even I crack up at these OSU band/cheerleader misspelling images. This one is more subtle than the one from last year with the band scripting "OShit" across the field, but still funny. It could very well be a real image and there was a reason that one "O" is all the way over there, but still--funny stuff.
  24. I guess I really haven't listened to too much 80s-era stuff so I haven't heard any of the shows you guys are talking about here, but maybe I will have to venture outside my GD "comfort zone" a bit and try some of those out. I'm just enjoying the fact that this thread (and the one before it) continues to be one of the most active topics around.
  25. Somebody should suggest to them that contrary to popular belief, Cleveland does not, in fact, rock; and that for the OH show they should do Columbus instead. (full disclosure: we don't rock that much, either, but if I'm ever going to make it to a Radiohead show it probably won't be unless they play less than 10 miles from me)
