  1. That's really bizarre that you mention that scene. A few nights ago I was flipping through the channels and noticed Easy Rider was on. I haven't seen it in maybe 25 years so I tuned it. That scene was on; I watched it and then changed the channel.
  2. I've watched the first two and am looking forward to getting caught up this weekend.
  3. Love Richard Russo. My favorites are Risk Pool, Nobody's Fool (which they turned into a pretty good movie that I just remembered has Philip Seymour Hoffman in a small but critical role), and Empire Falls.
  4. Thanks for letting us know (and that totally sucks).
  5. As others have alluded to, I'm particular about Dark Star. Those that I like are among my favorite stuff by the Dead. I feel like from 1969 though 1970 they really nailed it. For me, pre-1969 versions are not quite there and those after 1970 are too noodly. There are a couple outliers I like - the Veneta 8/27/72 and the 12/31/78 Closing of Winterland mentioned above by jw harding - but other than that I tend to stick to 2/13/70, 2/27/69 (Live Dead), anda couple of others.
  6. Not heard but (sort of seen): I saw an article about Seth Meyers leaving SNL and it showed him in his office packing stuff up and there was a framed Wilco poster on the wall behind him.
  7. I liked that one. I appreciate that he didn't just pick the best songs but that he brought it through the current day and tried to tell the whole story.
  8. What do you think? Pitchfork sure liked it. My copy is on its way and should arrive today.
  9. A friend of mine saw Jeff Beck recently and had seats right up front. He said that under the heat of the lights and as Beck started to sweat you could see the black hair dye dripping down. To LouieB's point, the dude is almost 70 and the jet black hair looks silly.
  10. Speaking of that, I just read: I had read it in high school but one of my kids was reading it for school so I picked it up. [An aside, when I went to get that cover picture from Amazon I noticed that there are about 40 one- and two-star reviews so I read them. Some are about problems with orders, some are from Holocaust deniers, and then there are people who write things like "He [Wiesel] has an incredibly selfish and generally uncaring attitude." WTF?]
  11. I have not read through all of the GBV/Pollard threads so maybe it's been mentioned elsewhere but I learned today that Pollard threw a no-hitter in college: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/29/bob-pollard-of-guided-by-voices-threw-a-no-hitter-in-college-ok/
  12. Neko Case is playing in Birmingham tonight (where it is apparently snowing) and she just tweeted: "Ok guys. The show is NOT CANCELLED tonight. It's snow, not lava."
  13. Ha! Didn't watch the Grammys but I know exactly what you mean.
  14. Still thinking about last week's show.
  15. Nice. Even though a lot of that is already out there and some of it has been released, I'm looking forward to an official release of it.
  16. That was a great show. I remember Mould had lost a bunch of weight and didn't have the Flying V and I didn't recognize him at first. And then he started playing ...
  17. At the Paradise (with Stamey, Maimone, and Fier)?
  18. I saw them do Odyssey live back in 1998 or so. It was pretty great.
  19. Derek and the Dominos - Keep on Growing. On the original vinyl I have (and have listened to a thousand times) there is no shout but on the remaster someone (Bobby Whitlock maybe?) shouts out "whoooo" just after the intro right as the song gets going. I cracked up the first time I heard it. I'm generally not a big Clapton fan and while I don't love the Layla album there are a few songs on it that I think are fantastic, Keep on Growing being one of them.
  20. Pretty interesting oral history on the making of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: http://www.stereogum.com/1629101/the-oral-history-of-pavements-crooked-rain-crooked-rain/franchises/the-anniversary/
  21. Wait - really?! I've got to pay more attention to shows.
  22. My friend asked whether Grumpy was filling in for Scott Spillane.
  23. Ha! Funny - I was 7th row right on the center aisle. And yes, it was a fantastic show. Quite a collection of instruments they had.
