  1. You know it's just a matter of time before someone posts a photo of Borat, right? I can only speak to the Russian literature part, but in addition to Dostoevsky and Chekhov, I would say check out Pushkin, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Gogol, & Lermontov. That is all.
  2. I wouldn't worry too much about being let down by the album as a whole. I'm not crazy about Side With The Seeds either (mainly because of Jeff's straining for vocals that are clearly out of his range), but there's plenty of great stuff on there, including Either Way, You Are My Face, and the title track.
  3. Harry Callahan: "Listen, punk. To me you're nothin' but dogshit, you understand? And a lot of things can happen to dogshit. It can be scraped up with a shovel off the ground. It can dry up and blow away in the wind. Or it can be stepped on and squashed. So take my advice and be careful where the dog shits ya!" Josey Wales: "You a bounty hunter?" Bounty Hunter: "A man's got to do something for a living these days." Josey Wales: "Dying ain't much of a living, boy." Harry Callahan: "When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher knife and a hardon, I figure he isn't out c

  6. I expect that New Madrid and Outtasite will remain good candidates for late-in-the-show appearances. The rest, not so much. Other songs that are most likely in the RIP category: That's Not The Issue (Last played: 1997-12-31) Dash 7 (Wilco has never played this as a full band) ELT (Last played: 1999-11-11) Magazine Called Sunset (Last played: 2006-04-19) Pot Kettle Black (Last played: 2004-11-10)
  7. Thanks for the reviews, guys. Here's one I found on the Interweb: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0...65-7642,00.html
  8. So does the phrase mean that it's the same color as black people, or that it's a color black people will like? (If it's the latter, it appears to be somewhat accurate.) All kidding aside, I found the most interesting part of the article to be the historical disinformation the mother fed the daughter, that the slur is a "bad name that blacks were called during the days of slavery." What?! Did general usage stop in 1865? Even the notion that it's something "blacks were called" is patently false. It was considered standard even by educated African-American writers as late as the 1890s, not onl
  9. Too Much Monkey Business - Chuck Berry Too Much Monkey Business - The Beatles Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except For Me and My Monkey - The Beatles The Monkey And The Engineer - Grateful Dead Leave My Monkey Alone - Warren Zevon
  10. Jannus Landing St. Pete, FL 8/31/99 One of those 25-song shows where they started off a little slowly, but once they got really warmed up, look out. The show featured a lot of Being There material, even though it was the Summerteeth tour. Great versions of "She's A Jar," "New Madrid," "Monday," and an absolutely savage "Misunderstood." I had never heard that song before, and during the 12 or 13 nothings, I was just like "Holy shit!" (On the soundboard recording, you can hear the word echoing back on itself. Weird and scary, but pretty cool. )
  11. I will heartily third this one. The day I heard a woman referring to her own breasts and derriere as "humps," "lumps" and "bumps" was the day I felt American musical culture had hit an all-time low. Truly sad.
  12. I just read Snoops' reaction: http://www.aolsportsblog.com/2007/04/12/sn...-me-to-don-imus I must say, I'm deeply offended by Snoop's ageism and unnecessary reference to race. As a fellow old-ass white man, I demand reparations. Oh, and Snoop should lose his record contract (if he even has one these days ... doesn't he mostly film pornos with hoes from the 'hood?).
  13. Since they're already southerners, I wish they'd come to FLA!
  14. I'd forgotten all about that epitaph. Glad to see it posted on wilcoworld ... way cool. He was unique, and one of my favorites, as I mentioned on here a while back. He and Hunter Thompson dominated my teens and thoroughly corrupted me, and for that, I thank them.
  15. No surprise here, I'm going with Zappa, especially the "full sentence" ones: I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth (even funnier: it's an instrumental!) The Girl Wants To Fix Him Some Broth Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? Broken Hearts Are For Assholes Ride My Face To Chicago
  16. This really was an awesome quote. I think it's sad that these young women have been deluded into thinking they should be so hurt, angry, sad, disgusted, or whatever. The day we have reached a real turning point in this country will be the day the response to someone like Imus is "Pffft. So what? Who cares what that guy says about me?" It's much ado about nothing, and the double standard (from the Chris Rocks and Dave Chappelles of the world) is ridiculous. I mean, should I have boycotted HBO when Rock called all white people "cracker-ass" or Comedy Central when Chappelle was garnering laug
  17. That was a pretty intense episode. I never expected that fight, and I was a little surprised Tony didn't actually just go ahead and whack Bobby when they went on that ride. Just when he was looking like he might be made a captain ...
  18. I was thinking more along the lines of If YHF = Highway 61 Revisited And AGIB = Blonde On Blonde Then SBS = John Wesley Harding
  19. That is a great interview. My favorite part was this: Is it wrong that I thought of the "Bring out your dead" scene in Monty Python & the Holy Grail when I read that?
  20. I just saw The Assassination of Richard Nixon, and that was really good. Sean Penn is consistently amazing.
  21. The first Jeff solo show I ever heard would probably have to be in my top five: 3/26/98, Lounge Ax, Chicago 1.
  22. Grammar: 100% Punctuation: 100% Spelling: 100% Vocabulary: 100% Did I cheat by getting a Master's in English?
  23. In addition to Eno, Spector, Lanois & George Martin, I'd say T-Bone Burnett.
