Louie, you're a lucky dog to have seen him that many times. I guess if you had Live at the Fillmore East memorized, then the phrase "The Mud Shark Dancing Lesson" rings a bell. Heh. I have gone through phases where I didn't listen to him much, and then I suddenly binge on it to no end, usually to some "unauthorized" live recordings (mountainbed knows what I'm talkin' about). He was definitely one of the greats, especially for the guitar. Funny how he's not known all that well as a composer, since R & R paid his mortgage. He makes a good avatar, too.

I love the way Bragg pronounces Lamont, even if it's wrong...otherwise the song would make me think of Sanford & Son.

This reminds me of a story I read online about someone who met FZ. He told him he had all his albums, to which Frank smiled and replied, "Well, then you're permanently contaminated."

I really like Ralph Vaughan Williams, The Lark Ascending. The version I have features a pretty hot young violinist, but I can't remember her name offhand, sorry. Big fan of Mozart and Schubert, too, though I can't recommend specific work/version combos. For something more modern and less "soothing," may I recommend Arnold Schoenberg? Great composer, not someone you always find in the classical section at Borders.

Wow, this really got a nice response. Cool. I got turned on to Zappa largely via AOR stations in the late 70s. There was a great radio special on him that started out something like this (very dramatic voiceover): "He came out of the west in 1965, leading a band of cosmic weirdoes in a frontal assault on the musical sensibilities of the civilized world..." The special included some nice interview segments and a highly diverse selection of his music, with songs like "Cheap Thrills," "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," and "I'm The Slime." I was bowled over by his off-the-wall humor, much

Next month it will be 41 years since the release of Freak Out and 40 years since the release of Absolutely Free. Since the Internet is abuzz with celebrations of the anniversaries of Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds, I thought it was high time I started a thread celebrating one of my all time favorite guitar player/composer/classic avatar anti-heroes, the inimitable Uncle Frankie. Favorite albums or songs, concert stories, or anything else FZ related would be cool to read here. I know he's not one of the "towering figures" around these parts (like Dylan, Neil Young, etc.), but his work has be

My fellow Deadheads here are cracking me up by turning this into a Jerry Garcia thread. Hm, I think I'll start a Frank Zappa appreciation thread in Someone Else's Song just for fun.

Well, we do have a few things in common on our lists ... I was looking for an "ouch" avatar to respond to the "old fart" comment, but could't find one. -

I got mine on Tuesday, and I'm all the way down in South Florida. It may just be the luck of the draw on the good ol' U.S. postal service. -

I cannot play it loud, as it is Dad Rock, and Dad Rock can only be played at a moderate volume. Okay, I'm just kidding. Seriously, I play some parts louder than others, but it's at a relatively loud volume in my car, softer at home. One thing I can't believe is how many people have complained that it's too mellow, sounds like an Eagles album, etc. Have these people not heard The Lonely One, Far Far Away, Less Than You Think, Reservations, Wishful Thinking, or Pieholden Suite, just to name a few? Wilco is not exactly a heavy metal band. But some of these songs rock pretty damn hard (especia

Petition to re-instate Jay Bennett
Mr. Heartbreak replied to Embarcadero_Skies's topic in Just A Fan
How about this: my preferred lineup of all time didn't have a Jay or a Nels in it. I saw them 3 times in 2002. See, there was this guy named Leroy Bach who would play rhythm while Jeff played lead, and ... aah, forget it. -
All right, get a room, you two.

I haven't read this whole thread, but it's good to know there are plenty of people who agree with me about what a self-righteous prick Falwell was. "If there is a Hell, its fires wait for them, not us." - FZ

Yeah, Don sounded better than I expected. He's really belting it out (well, for him). The drummer dropped a stick during Aja, and never missed a beat. He's a monster, one of the best drummers I've ever seen.

Of course people have expected for years that Chris would go down in the proverbial hail of gunfire. That's what's so great about The Sopranos. It doesn't satisfy your expectations. "I'm prostate with grief."

Nice! Phil always makes my Top 5 too. For today, it's: Zappa/Mothers - One Size Fits All Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Live, 1966 John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Phil Ochs - Live in Vancouver Bruce Cockburn - In The Fallling Dark

The abovementioned Preludes set just came out on 5/1, and Amazon.com is now hosting a "Warren Zevon Home Movies" clip with an early demo of Werewolves of London here. Pretty cool to see WZ when he was just a young guy. According to one reviewer, Best Buy is selling a version with 3 bonus tracks, so I may have to check that out.
