Joni Mitchell - Late career resurgence?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to LouieB's topic in Someone Else's Song
I absolutely love Joni's material all the way through Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, but her voice has been ravaged by cigarettes nearly as bad as Dylan's ... worse, actually, when you consider what a beautiful instrument it once was (the same cannot be said about Bob, though I know some will want to debate me on that one). I don't think she's put out a listenable album since the 80s, and it always bums me out that her career didn't have a different arc to it. I wish her the best, though, because I really think she deserves all the accolades she gets. -
Also, yelling, "Get the fuck off me!" was a move that, in retrospect, was pretty ill-advised.

1 beloved album from your collection

Wow, there's someone who doesn't ever get enough props, The Nields. I used to see them for pennies in CT when I lived there. In fact, I once saw the 2 Nields sisters play a gig in a West Hartford health food store called Cheese & Stuff ... I paid about 3 bucks and was about 3 feet away from them. Those were good days. -

I need to add one more, totally different from my other pick: Bruce Cockburn - In The Falling Dark -
I think they tasered him because he was resisting arrest. He tried to get away from them, and even after he was subdued on the ground he was still trying to somehow control the situation, yelling and screaming, trying to negotiate, and actually telling them what, or what not, to do. I'm about as far left as anybody I know, and I totally would have tasered him.

Where to start with The Grateful Dead?
Mr. Heartbreak replied to reverandgroove's topic in Someone Else's Song
I'll be the first one to admit that there's plenty of Dead material out there I don't like, but I really like a lot of the Shakedown Street album. There's sort of an eerie, icy quality to Jerry's vocals (especially on Fire on the Mountain) that I find very effective for the songs. Also, I have yet to hear him top his studio vocal performances in live incarnations of those songs ... though it is fair to say that the long live jams on Scarlet -> Fire and Shakedown are much more interesting than what's on the studio versions. -
This is true for me as well. My first Wilco show was during the ST tour, and for that reason alone, many of those songs will always be favorites.

Great way to get the dog looking forward to visiting the vet.

I can't speak for anybody else, but my excuse would be as follows: "I'm just a slave to temptation."
-
I was going to say, "Isn't there a box I can check for None Of The Above?" But this was way harsher.
-
Seconded. I'd consider Driftin' Too Far From Shore as well.
-
Yes indeed, my fellow Phil fan. I would also add "Doesn't Lenny Live Here Anymore?" and "I've Had Her" to that list.

I'll fan the flames of this one by noting the following story from several years ago here in the Tampa, Florida area: http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/0/24...CD?OpenDocument I know one of the people who was nearly victimized by this group of criminals. He didn't know where they were from, of course, but he did mention that they had "heavy" Latino accents. He also mentioned that the police told him they were investigating a number of illegal aliens for just such crimes.

Honestly, unless you're the one ponying up the dough, you cannot imagine how deeply pissed we actually are. But thanks for the empathy! I totally agree with EL 我與您的媽媽性交 on this: Audacity is precisely the right word. I find it interesting that she is willing to abandon her son here in the states for her "cause" (after all, they could have stayed in the church). I also find it appalling that she was compared to Rosa Parks in the press. I had no idea that enforcement of immigration laws was sooo racist. Maybe I'll fly to Europe, overstay my visa, and then cry "racism" when they deport this -
Damn, I love Monty Python.

You were correct, the song is entitled "Let Me Come Home." The title listed on Pitchfork is an error, kind of like their reference to a "solemn sting section" in the song. If anyone from Pitchfork is reading this, and you need an editor, let me know. My freelance editing rates are very reasonable.

That gave me a chuckle, too. This may be yet another way to get introduced to the band, but I highly doubt serious Deadheads will bother with it. -
Heh heh ... I always thought Kajagoogoo was a really crappy name for a band. Are there any bands out there named Turd Blossom? That would be a pretty bad one ...
-
Never heard of this band, but I like the idea. I used to have a friend who absolutely loathed John Mellencamp, and his distaste was fueled even more by Mellencamp's periodic "name changes" (from John Cougar to John Cougar Mellencamp to John Mellencamp, for those of you who weren't around then). Anyway, he always referred to him as "John Loser Menstrual Cramp."
