Can't they deport her from Lafayette Park? I'm sorry, I just don't understand the cojones of people like this. What I hear them saying is, "I broke your laws to come here, and now you have to let me stay." Meanwhile, people like my wife (who is a LEGAL immigrant) and I have to pay the government hundreds of dollars for processing fees in order to keep things copacetic with Homeland Security. -

I guess that "menial" job at O'Hare Airport didn't work out so well. How does one manage to stay inside a church for a year and still work at a job? -
Time to nab her and send her back to Mexico before she makes it to DC. http://news.netscape.com/story/2007/08/15/...icago-sanctuary Illegal immigrant to depart Chicago sanctuary CHICAGO (Reuters) - An illegal Mexican immigrant who became a voice for families facing deportation by taking sanctuary in a Chicago church a year ago said on Wednesday she will leave her refuge to take her fight to Washington. Elvira Arellano, 32, has stayed within the cramped walls of the storefront Adalberto United Methodist Church for one year, invoking the ancient medieval protection of sanctuary. With h

Where to start with The Grateful Dead?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say "Best Zappa Song Ever." One Size Fits All never leaves my all time top ten list for a reason, my friend. -
Met Rich Little and Mel Torme after their concert when I was 10. Music world (also after shows): other than Jeff and the boys, I've met Bruce Cockburn, Patty Larkin, Jonatha Brooke, and The Nields Literary world: James Baldwin, Jason Miller & Alice McDermott while at college

You guys are all right, you know that? Here's Dylan doing a little tribute to Jerry, just a few months after he died: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gXzSMUeWqE -

Another favorite of mine is the Frost Ampitheatre show from 10/9/82. I especially love the second set opener of Throwing Stones > Touch of Grey: new (at the time), a little sloppy, but passionate ... just great. The first set is pretty cool, too, with an early West LA Fadeaway that has the original extra verse about living "by the golden rule." http://www.archive.org/details/gd82-10-09....5800.sbeok.shnf -
The older I get, the more I find myself gravitating toward jazz over rock. For years, almost all of my rather large music collection was rock, with a bit of folk and blues, but the jazz section is now the second largest component. I'm a big Coltrane fan, though I much prefer the middle period (from about '60-'64), and I love Miles too, of course. Big props also to many of the great sidemen from that period, a good number of whom were fine bandleaders in their own right. I'm thinking especially of Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Bud Powell, Cannonball Adderley, Grant Green, McCoy

There are also some clips of ZPZ on the official site here: www.zappa.com/zpz/videos.html If it's as good as the Zomby Woof clip, I'd pay for that! On a related note: does anybody here have any familiarity with Eugene Chadbourne? He's playing here in South Florida w/ Jimmy Carl Black in late September, w/special guests Bogus Pomp (a great FZ cover band). Here's what his website says about the shows: I'm intrigued, but not sure I want to go.

I thought this was hilarious. I wonder how Ryan will react to "Summer of '69" shoutouts now that he's sobered up? Hopefully with a lot more grace than in the past...

I agree. He's annoying as hell. In fact, I haven't much liked any movie I've seen him in, including Tenenbaums. -

I'm with you on that. The vocals are good, not just the instrumental sections. Should we start individual threads on this for favorite songs or song combos? And how many do you think we could get away with before the admins step in? -

Well, maybe "listenable" is too strong a word. How about this: they played a lot of shows where only about 20-30% of the performance was strong enough to warrant an official release. And many of the shows contained performances which were ultimately subpar, to put it kindly (think of the infamous "Donna screeches" during "Playing"). I'm not saying I don't like any of what's in those shows. I will say, however, that when someone is looking for a starting point in a massive catalog - not to mention the fact that there is also a massive archive of unreleased recordings out there on the web - I -

Most people don't need to remove it at all. It's there for a reason. If the ear becomes impacted with it, then it's a problem, and of course it could be removed by the patient himself, but I don't think it's something most physicians of any sort would recommend. If you want to put candles in your ears, knock yourself out. Whatever floats your boat. By the way, an ENT actually deals a lot with allergies, and many of them do a lot of treatment of sleep apnea, snoring, as well as surgical procedures (especially for facial trauma), and so on. Dealing with ear wax is a very tiny % of what they d

For someone new to the Dead, I still would not recommend anything other than the original official releases. The Dick's Picks and Fallout from the Phil Zone, etc., etc., all have too many offkey notes and too much out of tune singing to be tolerated by a casual listener. I'd say pick up Europe '72, American Beauty, and Workingman's Dead. If those don't appeal to you, you're hopeless. If they do appeal to you, and you become a fanatic, then start diving into the vast archive of live recordings that were not officially released in search of gems among the dross. I love the Dead, but they play -
I write about medical issues for a living, and I have spoken with an ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT) about ear wax. He explained that ear wax is a necessary evil, and should not be removed from the ear. In the event that excess ear wax becomes problematic, the ears can be cleaned out by a medical professional with special equipment.

In my day, the boys carried their books under one arm, and the girls carried theirs in front of them ... now they have designer backpacks from L.L. Bean and Tommy Hilfiger.
