photos and short review from Newport Folk Festival

Imagine how those poor saps felt in '65 when Dylan went electric. -
Saw something funny online today. "The Legend of Voter Fraud: A strange phenomenon that Republicans believe only happens in places where they lose elections." Except Pleasures of the Harbor, right?
-
Yep. Even after all their success, there are still moments when they feel like a secret that only a few people are in on.

No need. We all agree he was a douche rocket.

Wow. It's obvious, but that is very encouraging to hear. Wish I could do the same thing with some of my old tapes!

At work and really digging this. Looks like another excellent show.

For real? Linking to a site with ads for "White Identity" by Jared Taylor and "Race and Reason" by Carleton Putnam? WTF?

Holy cow. Wow. I hope they are filming this stuff, or at the very least, planning a nice big Roadcase release. -
Not to derail the thread too much discussing wages, but minimum wage only applies to certain conditions. There are many people getting paid cash under the table. If you don't put illegal aliens on your payroll, it's easier to get away with employing them. If they are on your payroll, and you get caught, you got a problem. Food service workers such as waitresses and waiters are NOT entitled to minimum wage under the law, and many restaurants pay workers as little as two dollars an hour. When waitresses say they live on their tips, they're not exaggerating.

That is pretty freaking cool. If they release a "collaborations" Roadcase from this tour, I will totally buy it. -

He has made similar statements at other shows too. He has a real sense of humor about it. He has also revealed that he doesn't understand the popularity of Magazine Called Sunset. (Dude, it's a cool song...just didn't fit anywhere on the records). At a show in 2010, he added that Magazine was one of the most popular requests online but then no one seems to know it at the shows. He said one of the crew goes on their website and requests it for every city. -
McCartney's soundchecks can be, apparently, performances in themselves. I found a copy of one of the shows I went to in May, and included in the download was the soundcheck. The setlist included Hi Ho Silver, Blue Suede Shoes, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Sun Is Shining, Every Night, Midnight Special and Bluebird...none of which were played during the show. I would love to have been there early to catch it!

But it's still on CD Universe. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=8997011&style=music Tempted to order it, but I am sure the price will go down a bit after it's released. Might actually be cheaper through Amazon than Dead.net.

I'm pretty impressed with the vast amount of material Jeff seems to be able to carry around in his head. I suspect they rehearse relative rarities (try that three times fast) before a show, but man! I can remember Bruce Cockburn, who is an incredible guitarist and songwriter, saying he could only remember about 20 of his own songs at any given time. Jeff seems to be able to carry twice that much without batting an eye.

I was tempted to post: Jan - Dave's Picks Vol. 4 May - Dave's Picks Vol. 5 Aug. - Dave's Picks Vol. 6 But I will play. Not as long a list as yours. So...the above, plus: Jan. Bevis Frond - Live at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Feb. Nothing. Mar. Hank Mobley - Dippin' 3osity - S/T RTX - Speed to Roam Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii Director's Cut DVD (needs a thread all its own, pros and cons) Joni Mitchell - Woman of Heart and Mind DVD Apr. Janis Joplin - Live at Winterland 68 May Natalie Merchant - Live in Concert, New York City, June 13, 1999 Cracker - Forever

Amazon pulled their listing. This is getting weird.

I agree that it's a precious right, which is why I don't want to see legal voters disenfranchised. I have not had experiences like yours, and maybe there are illegal aliens voting. I have no idea. They are undocumented, so if they somehow get registered to vote (not sure how that would happen), there is no way to know how many or how few they are. If I am naive about it, it's because there is truly no record. Conversely, there is a clear and present record of Republican legislators doing everything they can - from gerrymandering to creating and pushing new voter ID laws - to make it more diffi

I suspect that this alone would keep the number very low. Personally, I have lived in my area for about 18 years, but have never had to show photo ID...just a voter registration card. Then again, I don't look like my name could possibly be Carlos Danger, or anything like that, so...

Being in the pit for Wilco, if possible, was the key for me. They are sufficiently popular now that, for the last 7-8 years, I have not been able to get that close to the stage for any of the shows I've seen. It was very cool being on the rail in Tampa. Last time I'd had a similar experience for a Wilco show was 2002!

Well, I was trying to appeal to your imagination and/or empathy, but obviously that didn't work, so we are back to hard numbers again. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/16/pennsylvania-voter-id-law_n_3605658.html We are not talking about "a few thousand" people. We are talking about hundreds of thousands. Half a million. Asking people to spend a couple dollars is too much, yes. Did you know that homeless American citizens have a right to vote too? They can have NO FUCKING MONEY and it's still their right to vote. The lady in FL who lost four hours of work time had A JOB AND A CAR. What abo

Here's a link to the PA voting info: http://www.votespa.com/portal/server.pt?open=514&objID=1174125&mode=2 Notice the forms of ID it mentions for people who are not first-time voters in the area: Non-photo ID issued by the CommonwealthNon-photo ID issued by the U.S. GovernmentFirearm permitCurrent utility billCurrent bank statementCurrent paycheckGovernment checkSo now imagine a woman who has been married but never worked outside the home. She's 91. Her late husband didn't have a bank account. Worked for cash. Didn't collect Social Security. She has never had a "non-photo ID issued

Many, many people in America today are completely unaware of how serious it is to disenfranchise voters by requiring them to get a photo ID to do something they may have been doing for 40, 50, or even 70 years. In some rural areas, it is a major ordeal to have to drive to the DMV. But there are even places in Pennsylvania, for example, where there are old neighborhoods where people - mostly poor and, yes, mostly black - live in row houses and do not have cars. They ride the bus. They take the subway. Some are in their 80s or 90s. They have been voting in every election since before anyone on

Yeah, I agree. I will probably drop money on the CD/DVD release, but $89 for a vinyl remaster of a Dead bootleg? No way.

Looks like its being released on vinyl as well: http://www.elusivedisc.com/THE-GRATEFUL-DEAD-VENETA-OREGON-8_27_72-180g-4LP/productinfo/WEALP79649/
