  1. I believe in Dan-speak it's known as a "fez".
  2. I dunno, but the first one that complains about Nels Cline playing too many notes get my vote.
  3. I imagine as salaried musicians the rest of the band makes enough to cover mortgages, support families/raise kids, and carry on with various musical side projects without having to worry too much about turning a profit (or breaking even, really). I seem to remember that salaries are briefly mentioned in the Kot book.
  4. I've only seen MMJ once, a few years ago. JJ was wearing a velvet cape and sporting a pair of silver cap guns. Anyone else would look like a tool (unless they were 4 yrs old), but somehow he made it work.
  5. Sure - don't you remember their hit "My Girl Likes to Party All Along the Watchtower"?
  6. I'm lukewarm on The Doors, so I mostly appreciate Ray for producing the first four X albums.
  7. Tom Waits is a poor man's Captain Beefheart.
  8. So... every year background checks prevent tens of thousands of unqualified folks from buying guns from licensed gun dealers. I wonder how many of those folks then say, "Oh, well - can't buy a gun from a brick-and-mortar licensed gun dealer. No gun for me, I guess."
  9. September 1982. Up until then I was a casual listener of late 70's--early 80's FM rock (Styx, Kansas, Skynyrd, etc.) - this album opened the floodgate to music that changed my life.
  10. Red Hot Chlii Peppers is the poor man's Minutemen Rancid is the poor man's Clash Robyn Hitchcock is the poor man's Syd Barrett
  11. But not every firearm sold in this nation ended with a background check.
  12. John Wesley Harding is a poor man's Elvis Costello
  13. Paul Carrack did it w/ 4 different groups- Ace/Roxy Music/Squeeze/Mike + the Mechanics
  14. Nels Billy Gibbons Keef Billy Zoom John Fahey LIndsey Buckingham Bob Mould Angus Young Neil Young Ron Wood (Faces-era)
  15. Saw her years ago (1988 or 1989?) when she opened for Billy Bragg and I remember being a bit put-off by her rants against organized religion - guess she's done a 180 since then.
  16. Flannery O'Conner John Updike Jack Kerouac Cormac McCarthy Jame Lee Burke
  17. I love the example he has of a White Album that someone painted white, as if the owner thought his copy wasn't white enough. It also got me thinking about the different approaches you could take to collecting White Albums - you could go for low-numbered copies (really low numbers can sell for thousands of dollars, though), or if you're really nuts you could try & collect consecutively-numbered copies.
