Sir George Martin in "Bloody awful" Beatles track shocker
moxiebean replied to Albert Tatlock's topic in Someone Else's Song
So, you didn't ask him to rank the Wilco albums?!? -
Capitol City is the only song from the new album that I skip - I just have this image of Jeff in a straw hat and a red & white striped vest twirling a bamboo cane. ugh. But.. I also accept that other folks around here love that song.

Please, just be in the moment & enjoy the music. There'll be plenty of time to talk about it afterwards.

Band lead singers you met? Friendly, not friendly? Impressions?
moxiebean replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I have a friend who worked at The Hacienda in Manchester and was introduced to Robert Smith by a mutual acquaintance (Steven Severin). He said that Robert was polite but seemed a bit nervous and (literally) standoff-ish - meaning he kept 4-5 feet distance from my friend. After Robert wandered off he asked Severin what what up. Severin told him that a few days before Robert was introduced to an over-excited American female fan, who had promptly vomited on him. -
The Whole Love: Speculation and (eventual) reactions

Another short review (apologies if this has been linked to already). Not really any new info, although mention of a ragtime-influenced number ("Capitol City") has me a bit concerned... -

Hee Hee. Yeah, just fry the mustard until aromatic - I usually use powdered mustard & it seems to work fine. Dried chilis are for heat, so whatever you have on hand is fine too. You can get Asafoetida online or at an Indian grocery. It's truly nasty stuff (uncooked it smells like the first syllable of it's name..) but adding a pinch & frying it with mustard just adds that something-something. I've bought a bag of all of the other ingredients premixed as Rajwadi Pickle Masala (pickling spices) at our local Indian grocery. We have two Indian groceries in Savannah but only one Indian re

An Indian co-worker turned me on to pickled limes a few years ago - they're intensely salty/limey with a bit of heat and are usually served as a condiment for Indian dishes (I think they'd go great with grilled chicken, too). I basically followed this recipe although you can tweak/substitute ingredients (be sure to include the fried mustard & asafoetida, tho). I usually mix up a batch & then put it out in direct sunlight for a couple of weeks until the rinds soften and everything get gooey - there's more than enough salt and acid in it that you don't have to worry about spoilage.

Got a bunch of new artwork done. Made a batch of Thai pepper hot sauce and two jars of pickled limes that have been sitting in the sun long enough this summer that they're ready to eat.

They should be peddling Wilco iPad cozies instead.

I totally agree with your presale synopsis. At least the Frontgate system puts regular ticket buyers on the same footing with the scalpers. I think if Wilco graduated to even larger venues the problem would only get worse, since I imagine there'd be even more slices of the ticket pie to dole out. The thought of a Wilco VIP ticket package deal makes me cringe. Fortunately I don't think it'll ever get to that point.

I made out pretty well with the Pixies presale, too.

At my suggestion we've purchased one of the signed limited edition copies of Dirty Baby for our library special collections department (I figured it's the next best thing to owning a personal copy), which just arrived today - everything about this from the slipcase to the artwork & cds is stunning.

1) A friend sent me a cassette tape of AM shortly after it came out (I think he put Trace on the other side of the tape) - I liked it okay but I didn't really get hooked until Being There. 2) First time seeing them was 2005 in Savannah. I had tickets to see them twice previously but it didn't pan out either time - YHF tour date in Florida (fuel pump died on the drive down I-95) & New Orleans in 2004 (which got canceled when Jeff went in rehab).

I've been listening to Being There yesterday and today for the first time in a while (probably more like 2-3 years) & I'm thinking "what a strange wonderful record". Besides all the weird little sonic blips I just love how it's mixed all warm and reverby w/ the keyboards pushed to the background a bit. I know they'll never make anything like BT again (and I wouldn't want them to) but if the mix is similar I'll be a happy guy.

I remember reading interviews w/ Bob Mould back in the day when he was starting up the label. I think it was set up as a subscription-based project where you would pay an annual amount & then receive a new single every month. Looking at the discography it seems like the project ran for a few years, then folded. Maybe not enough subscribers or problems w/ manufacturing/distribution? I'd sure love to hear some of those releases, too. Wonder if any of them ever turn up on ebay..
