  1. I like Husker Du and Bob's solo albums, and I like some of Sugar, but his solo show was monotonous. He was sitting in a chair playing one of those crappy sounding Ovation acoustics, playing and singing with no sense of dynamics whatsoever. Every song was the same tempo and same volume. This must've been in '97, or so. Maybe he was just having a bad night, but that show put a big and everlasting dent in my desire to see any more solo acoustic shows.
  2. I had two third row tickets for this Pearl Jam show in '94: http://www.discogs.com/release/1115938 But I sold them to a broker for $250 (big money back then) and spent the money on a roadtrip to Ohio with a friend to see these two Dead shows: http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-03-20....5464.sbeok.shnf http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-03-21....6258.sbeok.shnf
  3. Damn, some of those vintage instruments are cheaper than a new run-of-the-mill Gibson.
  4. Yeah, that guy's annoying. Did you see the lineup with Bjork and the other gal, or was it the Bjork and a bunch of dudes lineup? There's nothing boring about the right side of that photo. Most boring band i ever saw: Crash Test Dummies
  5. Must've been '92 or '93. Granted, they were playing in a college gymnasium (no alcohol allowed), which is a pretty sterile environment for a concert. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but I saw Beastie Boys, Fishbone, Mike Watt and Primus in the same gym within a year of the SD show and those were some of the best shows I've ever seen. I remember that prima donna Mike Ness storming off after a meathead jumped on stage and stole his hat. A dick move from the meathead, for sure, but I have it on good authority that the band was saving their "classic" material for a lengthy encore. The
  6. Social Distortion. I really wanted to like this one, but I was bored to tears.
  7. I have to add Concrete Blonde to my list. Horrible. The guy in front of me kept whipping me in the face with his greasy goth hair. That didn't help. Widespread Panic always bored me, but somehow I wound up seeing them seven or eight times during the HORDE era.
  8. Me too. My friend and I snuck in a camcorder which we wrapped in a plastic bag and placed on the bottom of a cooler (the venue allowed coolers). We videotaped the whole show and security didn't seem to care.
  9. Walt Mink Mike Watt and the Crew of the Flying Saucer Shakti Allman Brothers Shudder to Think
  10. I have a Blueridge BR 143. It's basically a copy of a Martin OOO type of guitar, I think. I'm very happy wth it. I think it would have cost $599 US, but I got it used with a case on a trade in deal. I think the used price was $475.
  11. I did not know that. Good for them. Touring is a pain in the ass.
  12. I have no idea, but I doubt it'd cost much to keep him on retainer. It's not like he was having to turn down high dollar offers over the last couple years. Anyway, as for the the Roots, it seems like they'll be ready to get back to being a regular band before too long and won't want to be anchored in one place. I think it'd be interesting if Fallon got an entirely new house band every season. I don't think a late night show has ever done that.
  13. Barry Gibb Talk Show. Having the Roots as the house band suggests to me that nobody is expecting this show to have longevity.
  14. This is obviously true, but it is an unfixable problem, so we'll have to work around it as long as possible.
  15. Battle of the gimmicky bands. Is Wayne still running around in a ball while santas and aliens dance on stage? Is the Arcade Fire guy still playinng drums on the other guy's helmeted head?
  16. Damn, I've had this album for years. It might be the most neglected album I own. I probably listened to it once about 15 years ago and put it away. I guess I bought it at the wrong time in my life...back when I was into things like Primus and Joe Satriani. I'll have to find my copy and check it out. EDIT: I just realized Phil Lesh is on this album. That's a major bonus. His playing on the Crosby album is stellar.
  17. I'd say Rat definitely matters. Bummer he won't be there. Who was the fourth member?
  18. Maybe this is a dumb question, but why is superglue ok for attaching a new nut?
  19. I like the Chattanooga Aquarium. I fell in love with my wife there...totally dropped the ball on the perfect opportunity for a first kiss, though. They don't have any salt water animals at that aquarium, do they? As for the layout, if I remember correctly, in Chatanooga you begin on one end and all traffic flows in the same direction towards the final exhibit, making it difficult to backtrack. The GA Aquarium has a center atrium surrounded by exhibits allowing you to choose where you want to go next, and it's easier to revisit an area if you want to take a second look. I prefer that
  20. In that case, you'll also want to see Ruby Falls. Make sure to take the incline railway. http://www.ridetheincline.com/
  21. Just yesterday I found out the friendly biker guy in my neighborhood has been practicing drums in his shed. Also yesterday, I ran into a neighbor at a Mexican restaurant who is selling his house. He told me a young couple has it under contract and they close in March. The husband, he says, is a musician who plays in a band. So that means there are at least two people within 100 yards of my house that I'll soon be able to jam with. Also, Wilco is playing on my birthday in Knoxville and I have tickets.
  22. Are these guys still around with the original lineup? I think they had a different drummer for a while, and I remember hearing about an unfortunate lawsuit between the band and Brian Ritchie. I saw them in 1990 or 1991. They were supposed to play at the Fox (a 5000 seater), but the show got downsized to the Roxy (a 1000 capacity general admission venue). Definitely a fun show. John Wesley Harding opened. I've never cared for what I've heard from him since then, but I enjoyed his set that night.
