  1. I opened for Mike Watt a couple times. Only got to talk to him at any length once. He was nice, and had some funny stories, but I could tell he was tired from the gig so I didn't try to take up much of his time. His band were cool, and we hung out with them for a good while. They later accused us in their tour diary of drinking all their beer backstage, but that's really not true. We each drank A beer from the backstage stash, which we thought was being shared among the bands (and refilled if it all got drank). There definitely was beer left in the cooler when we loaded up and left. I s
  2. The Grateful Dead played this as an encore 3/4 of times I got to see them. Lazy and disappointing. Good song, but kinda lame in that context.
  3. Polvo: Lazy Comet Feather of Forgiveness Fractured Like Chandeliers Bombs that Fall From Your Eyes High Wire Moves
  4. I heard Dead Kennedys version of Viva Las Vegas before the original, which I assume is by Elvis.

    Today

John Glenn died and I got tickets to see PJ Harvey.
  6. I f-ing LOVED Tin Machine so much that I made a stencil out of a cardboard box and spray painted their name on one of my t-shirts so I could wear it proudly to school on out-of-uniform day. Back then, there was no internet, so the only way to hear this song was to buy an obscure import 12". I still like most of their first album, but rarely listen to it. I also heard Tin Machine do Roxy Music's If There is Something looooooong before I ever heard any Roxy Music songs (with the possible exception of Love Is a Drug).
  7. I heard Tin Machine do Maggie's Farm before Dylan.
  8. Glad I got to see him as part of Ringo's band.
  9. I heard the Subsonics version of Love Comes in Spurts before hearing the Richard Hell and the Voidoids original. Or actually, I guess the Voidoids version wasn't the first recording of it, although it is a Richard Hell song. I think the Neon Boys recorded it first, and the Heartbreakers did it, too, but I don't know if they recorded it.
  10. I heard Cyndi Lauper doing Girls Just Want to Have Fun before the Robert Hazard original version. I heard Cyndi Lauper doing Money Changes Everything before the Brains original version.
  11. I heard Walt Mink do Pink Moon before I ever even heard the name Nick Drake.
  12. My older brother got Shout at the Devil (and a stereo) for Christmas the year it came out. I was 11 at the time. I had heard some Beatles by then, but not the White Album.
  13. Helter Skelter - I heard Motley Crue's version before the Beatles. Smokin' in the Boys Room- I heard Motley Crue's version before Brownsville Station.
  14. I didn't know RHCP did that one, but I heard Fishbone's version of it first.
  15. Making Plans for Nigel - I heard Primus's version before the XTC original.
  16. Jane's Addiction - Rock and Roll. Heard before the VU original. Beware of Darkness - Leon Russell. Heard before the George Harrison original.
  17. Every cover song on the fIREHOSE Live Totem Pole EP. (Sophisticated Bitch - Public Enemy, Slack Motherfucker - Superchunk, The Red and the Black - BOC, Revolution (Part Two) - Butthole Surfers...still haven't heard the original, Mannequin - Wire)
  18. Walking the Cow - fIREHOSE. Heard before the Daniel Johnson original. Memories Can't Wait - Living Colour. Heard before the Talking Heads original. Young Man Blues - The Who. Heard before the Mose Allison original.
  19. Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) - I heard the Jerry Garcia Band version before Dylan's original. Mr. Tambourine Man - I heard the Byrds before Dylan. I Can't Stand It - I heard Five Eight's version before the Velvet Underground. Tainted Love - Like everyone of my generation, I heard Soft Cell before Gloria Jones.
  20. Venus - Bananarama? (Originally by Shocking Blue) The Meat Puppets songs Nirvana covered on Unplugged. Where Have All the Good Times Gone - Van Halen (Kinks, originally) Somebody to Love - Agent Orange first, Jefferson Airplane second (Originally by the Great Society)
  21. I've had my Kindle for probably less than five years. It was the cheapest one they make. I was thinking of upgrading it, anyway. I have a bunch of regular books to read, and hopefully Amazon will offer a deal on Kindles before I get through with those.
  22. Sam Evian: Premium. Just discovered this guy. Pretty solid mellow-rock.
  23. Well, my Kindle died last night, which is obviously a bummer. But as with all things, there is a plus side, and in this case the plus side is that I have an excuse to stop reading Jerry on Jerry: The Unreleased Jerry Garcia Interviews. Someone really should have edited this. It's mostly paragraph length questions, to which Garcia responds "yes. It was far out." Garbage, even at the $1.99 price.
  24. Just finished up Good Girls Revolt and Red Oaks. Enjoyed both. Also been watching Soundbreaking on PBS. I have a couple more episodes left, but I've been pretty impressed. I might wrap that one up tonight.
  25. Wilco Duran Duran & Chic Dungen & Quilt Voivod Violent Femmes Brian Wilson Absolutely Not & Rudest Priest (Never had heard of either of these bands, but we wanted to see a small show when we were in Albuquerque in March, and they were both really good and a lot of fun.) Ty Segall and the Muggers Booker T. Jones
