This is the first shot in their outrage fatigue campaign. A month or two from now, everyone will be so tired of being outraged that the calls to congressmen will stop and the pressure will fizzle. Then the nasty shit will start in earnest.

He's probably better known as a producer now (Alabama Shakes, Dawes, John Legend, Jim James, and others), but he's one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. He was incredible when I saw him in Fiona Apple's band. Definitely worth looking into.

Almost that time of the year. Top 10 albums of 2016
jff replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I was disappointed with this album, and I don't think it's necessarily the band's fault. They really impressed me on their Tiny Desk Concert, and some other performances I saw online. Something about the album seems off to me, though. Maybe it's a victim of brickwalling, but it sounds like everything is turned all the way up at all times. -
Those are not the same buildings.

Derek heavily incorporates qawalli and Hindustani music into his playing, which sets him apart from other players of his generation. While Derek was certainly not the first guitarist to explore these music styles, it'd be tough to find another American or British guitarist who is more dedicated or serious about it, Now there are younger guitarists, such as Blake Mills, exploring this same territory. I believe he has credited Derek with opening that door to him. In that way, I think Derek has made a mark on guitar playing.

Over the weekend we binge watched Fleabag (on Amazon) and Crazyhead (Netflix). Both were very enjoyable.

Me, too, but it's highly unlikely he'll play. Steve Howe says Bill hasn't touched a drumstick in nine years and has no intention of ever performing again.

Contrary to my prediction back in August, I'm liking this less the more I listen. Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales is not a very good song. It's surprising that it has become the key track. There are better songs on this record. Maybe they could still win me over if I ever see them live.

This year I went to: Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, AK Carcross, Yukon Territory Santa Fe and Albuquerque (and surrounding areas), NM Cape San Blas, FL Washington DC Wilmington, DE Philadelphia, PA Seattle, WA Next year I have the following lined up: Amsterdam & Paris in Spring Richmond, VA to see PJ Harvey Detroit, MI to see Nick Cave (and to cross another state I've never visited off the list) I was going to go to Red Rocks in May for Tom Petty, but our travel schedule is getting full and my dog is sick of being boarded, so for all of our sakes I scrapped that idea.

I heard the execrable Blinded By The Light by the Manfred Mann Earth Band before hearing Springsteen's original.

Me too. Forgot about that one.

I first heard Widespread Panic versions of Send Your Mind (Van Morrison) and Travelin' Light (JJ Cale) before the originals. Speaking of JJ Cale, I first heard Cocaine done by Clapton and Call Me the Breeze done by Skynyrd, And speaking of Van Morrison, I heard Jackie Wilson Said first by Dexy's Midnight Runners, courtesy of The Young Ones.

What newish bands did you get into this year?
jff replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Omni Big Thief I'm sure there are more, but those are the first that come to mind. -
How do you feel about musicians reading lyrics on stage?
jff replied to lamradio's topic in Solid State Technology
I have mixed feelings about this. I don't like to see the singer who wrote the lyrics reading lyrics. I find that lazy, and it generally makes for a less engaging performance. (With exceptions for people with long careers and lengthy songbooks, or people subbing on the gig). On the other hand, nobody scoffs at a jazz combo or an orchestra reading off of sheet music. I see no difference between the two. Why should a rock or pop singer be expected to memorize their music, but jazz and classical musicians have sheet music and far more training almost without exception, but they aren't e -
Quiet, you're getting Grover Norquist aroused.

My guitarist friend and I got together this weekend to jam. We played a bunch of NY&CH songs. Powderfinger, Fuckin' Up, Cinnamon Girl, Hey Hey My My. Those songs are easy and fun as shit to play on drums. It also gave me an opportunity to try singing backup parts while playing, which is something I've never done. Fortunately I did not have a vocal mic so I got to imagine it sounding good, rather than hearing it sound terrible.
