A little update, since I started this thread a while back... A little birdie told me that this session never actually happened. That it was canceled for some reason. Just FYI, in case anyone was really waiting with baited breath for it to come out.

I actually missed the AD's set at Solid Sound, so I'm glad that Kidsmoke was able to help you out. From other reports I've read about this tour, it seems like they're still closing it out with the Big Star song. Which is just fine with me. It's a good closer for them.

Awesome to hear that they did "Full 5 Paces!" I had been hoping they'd revisit some of the "oldies." I really think The Green Hour is a pretty underrated record, so perhaps they've got "Wellspring" or "Recuperating From The War" somewhere in their back pockets as well. And I haven't heard all of the new record yet -- I'm waiting for the vinyl, which I hear has been slighly delayed? -- but I do dig a few of the songs I've heard and look forward to hearing more... Are they still closing with Big Star's "You Can't Have Me?"

Well, I agree in terms of the whole album aspect. I wish they'd just release everything (well, maybe not Yanni) but they probably deemed it not commercially viable to do so. After all, how many people have even ever bought the original "Oar" record, much less would buy a cover version of it? In terms of the "musicians fucking around in the studio," obviously they all knew that these sessions were being filmed and posted on the Web, so that casual ideal is sort of shattered right away. MP3s suck, sound-wise, so it'd be nice to have a lossless, mastered version of these recordings. But hey, you don't have to buy it...

Not saying you're incorrect about the FBs, but I also seem to remember Aluminum Group opening at Otto's one time or another. Right? Another support act that I can't believe I forgot earlier was Elliott Brood, who opened a few Canadian dates back in the summer of '06. Those guys were one of my favorite openers--super nice guys. Yeah, I don't see what else they could really do, short of asking a trivia question on the way in... This is kind of funny to me, though: "Pick up your tickets at the event at the box office will call window, which is usually near the venue’s main entrance." You'll be looking for a "window" for a long time out there on Delancey St. (the will call is just a little podium as you go in, and there's pretty much only one way in.)

Re: Healthy White Baby, you are correct! That was a fun time. And I'm not sure if the Aussie/NZ act you're referring to was The Mess Hall, but they opened a few shows at some point. I thought they were just a two-man outfit (guitar and drums), but perhaps they also had a bass player with them.

Now I'm having fun going down memory lane... Just a few more openers that I unearthed from my records in 2005: *Healthy White Baby (Danny Black/Laurie Stirratt/etc....I miss those guys!) *Polar Goldie Cats (featuring the esteemed Bobb Bruno) *The Court and Spark I believe The Clientele have also opened a few shows more recently, yes?

My records indicate that local guy in Dublin in '07 was called Ollie Cole (I agree that he unfortunately was pretty forgettable). And unless I'm mistaken, another singer-songwriter guy called Ruarri Joseph opened at least one show in London a few years back. And in addition to the Sunday Drivers in Spain in '07, I had forgotten that another English-singing Spanish band called Smile also supported on that run.

Yeah, in Duluth, MN (natch) at least once. That reminded me that back at a show at Yale U. in '03 (I believe), the Nappy Roots also opened up. You often get some really weird pairings at those "spring fling"-type shows that colleges often have in April/May.

Of course the Jayhawks shared a bunch of bills with Wilco in the late 90's. And I think Chicago's Frisbie also opened some shows back then. Neil Michael Hagerty opened some East Coast shows in the spring of 2002. Oranger opened one of my favorite shows ever, the January '03 one-off at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. A couple of more recent European openers were the Sunday Drivers (in Spain a couple of years ago, I think) and the Latebirds (a couple of shows in Holland last year). And of course, the support acts on this most recent European jaunt were Phil Selway, Hanne Hukk

It was supposed to be limited, but I've seen a lot of of copies still sitting in stores. I think it was a pressing of 5,000 and not 1,000 as initially thought, though. I'm sure a lot of people balked at the price tag as well.

Perhaps I might have entered a request for that one... Don't really have time to get into it right now, but the other thing about the guy that Jeff had the incident(s) with was that he had already been a distraction earlier in the show when he literally walked across the front row during a song and proceeded to stop and snap photos of each band member. So the guy had already raised Jeff's ire...

Not much time to write tonight, and an early wakeup call to boot, so I'll just say that this was a pretty fun and great-sounding show until things sort of went off the rails in the encore. The camera scourge returned in a big way. Jeff apparently had to take the camera (or phone) of someone in the front row during the main set. He came over and returned it when he came back out for the encore, but the guy must have started taking pictures again because before Jeff could even start singing Hummingbird, he went back over and had an argument with the guy. Don't really have a lot to report from this one. I had one of those seats in a seated auditorium that are toward the front but far, far off to one side so that a lot of my view was blocked by speakers. It might have been the first gig I've been to where I couldn't see Glenn for one single second. So that kind of sucked. (Of course, the seat wasn't ever advertised at any point as having an obstructed view. But that's another story. ) So I'll leave it to others to fill in anything that I couldn't see. Jeff has been playing a JM on Bull Black Nova, and it does look like Nels'...but it's not because Nels usually plays his on BBN. It's almost uncanny, though -- even the wear pattern looks similar. And sadly, no sign of the rainbow SG. Might not have made the trip.
