    Wilcobase

Since you asked to be corrected: there's no "f" in Aricandover.
  2. The Wilco content is GREAT -- if you like the Mermaid Avenue songs, it's definitely worth owning the dvd for. You can always skip over the Guthrie/Bragg parts if you don't like them. I think Man in the Sand's version of When the Roses Bloom Again is one of the best I've ever heard.

    Tour Dates

I think you were calling for more apples.
  4. I'll leave the obvious "I'd like to live on Fairfax between Melrose and Beverly" for another day, and say instead that though I only know limited neighborhoods in LA from visiting (rather than from living there), of the ones I do know I'd love to live in Silverlake or Los Feliz. I'm one of those people who used to think I didn't like LA, but I feel right at home in both of those places.
  5. Nels wrote a lovely tribute on his site: http://nelscline.com/news.html
  6. I'm very pleased myself to discover we have some GA-ness this time!

    Jesus Etc.

That song is the prime example I use whenever I hear of someone trying to find the "definitive" meaning of a song's lyrics. Even if you manage to discover somehow exactly what was in the writer's head when it was written, it doesn't mean much, because the meaning will absolutely change later. Whatever the phrase "tall buildings shake" meant when Jeff wrote it, it means something utterly different now.

    Jesus Etc.

And Wilcobase says Jesus, etc. was first played live in June 2001.
  9. Among the people I know, there are a lot of people who prefer the live versions. But I'm really glad we've got both to choose from -- clean studio versions and various incarnations of the live versions. If the studio versions were raw, we'd only have one option.
  10. I'm pretty sure the band wants to go see Martin Rivas at Slane that night.
  11. I don't think that anyone expects the music scene in NY to die because Tonic closed. I think people associate clubs with the shows they saw there, and if they were great shows, they feel genuine (not false) nostalgia for the place. There are very real worries about what happens to the world of small music clubs when real estate costs go up and giant bland conglomerates start amassing all the venues, but when individual clubs go down, my own hand-wringing generally isn't about that, it's about the loss of a place where I got to experience something great.
  12. Yeah, I'm sure the tickets will last longer than 930 ones do. And the Roots were one of the best Wilco openers ever. As a denizen of Washington, DC, I'd like to nitpickingly mention that they really shouldn't list it as a DC show. Columbia, Maryland is 35 miles away from here. So that means they should play 930, too.
  13. Did someone request this? I love that this whole "take one request from everyone" idea that started with the private shows may become a Tweedy "thing", because it's just brilliant. It'll be even more fun when people start requesting more weirdo covers. Anything could happen!
  14. I saw Nels and his friends there, and I saw my best non-Largo Jon Brion shows ever there. RIP, you lovely place, you.
  15. From one vegetarian to another: this place has some yummy food, and it's right around the corner.
  16. Yeah, there are a few of us who've crossed oceans for shows, and I think we'll all tell you they were fantastic experiences. I'm looking forward to your reports. (BTW, I biked the south island in 1999, and I still remember something wonderful about it most every day. That's quite a spectacular country you've got there.)
  17. That really is an amazing clip, thanks for the link!
  18. I don't know a thing about Fairfax, but... If you're at Union Station, you're literally steps from the U.S. capitol -- just walk out the front of the station and it's kinda hard to miss. If the weather is good, walk around it just to have a look (it's pretty!), and when you get to the other side, you'll see the Washington Monument, and then The Mall is right in front of you. The various Smithsonian museums are basically lined up on either side of The Mall. If you like the idea of exploring neighborhoods rather than museums, this website specializes in DC neighborhoods. 19. I was pretty shruggy about the song until they started using it as a closer in May of 2004. Then it was beautiful. I know someone had a little video of him doing it at one of the dekalb shows, but maybe someone else has it, because I don't.
  20. Mart and I are sharing imaginations again, then, because I've met the figment, and he's great! Happiest birthday, Drew!!

  22. Will someone who has watched it please tell me exactly what accent Mr. Izzard is supposed to be sporting? I have absolutely no idea. I didn't hate it, btw!
