nodep5
Do You Realize? - The Flaming Lips I think this song is inherently sad at it's core. The line "Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face" ALWAYS gets me. Oh, Oh, Oh, White Daisy Passing- Rocky Votolato amazingly sad
Lammycat
garcia and grisman's take on Two Soldiers. jerry's voice on this one kills me.Which reminds of me of the "Sitting Here in Limbo," they do, as well as "Shenandoah" off of Not for Kids Only.

andshewas
Do You Realize? - The Flaming Lips I think this song is inherently sad at it's core. The line "Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face" ALWAYS gets me. My best friend had this song played at his dad's funeral. I guess his ex-wife [of many, many years] couldn't handle it... As for me, though, this song is sad because my asshole ex-boyfriend always used to quote that song to me in text messages. I hate thinking about it.
thecanuck
The song that immediately popped into my head when I saw this thread was "September" by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals. It kills me every time. It's just so stark and forlorn.
stickman
Have you heard the alternate version of September? It's more rocking and less powerful but still worth hearing.
thecanuck
Have you heard the alternate version of September? It's more rocking and less powerful but still worth hearing. No I haven't. Is it from the JCN sessions or some other bootleg out there?

anthony
I've always thought I&W's "Naked As We Came" was a heartbreakingly sad song. She says "wake up, it's no use pretending" I'll keep stealing, breathing her.Birds are leaving over autumn's ending One of us will die inside these arms Eyes wide open, naked as we came One will spread our ashes 'round the yard She says "If I leave before you, darling Don't you waste me in the ground" I lay smiling like our sleeping children One of us will die inside these arms Eyes wide open, naked as we came One will spread our ashes round the yard

Moss
Just visiting this thread for the first time. Some great stuff. I didn't see (could be wrong): All those years ago - George Harrison - The lines "Living with good and bad, I always looked up to you" give you a sense that John was sort of a big brother figure and I just find it very touching. Fallen Angel - Robbie Robertson - Nice song written for another fallen fellow band member. Angels and Fuselage - Drive by Truckers - More haunting than sad but the description of "Friends on the ground, friends in the trees..." paint a horrific picture of the skynard crash.
