LouieB
This was a thread a few years back...I simply can't remember any more. Depends on what you call real. Did we have to buy the album ourselves? The first two I remember buying myself were The Best of Buffalo Springfield and Three Dog Night's first album. LouieB
Sir Stewart
I bought Huey Lewis and The News' Sports with my money and told my father when I came home with it that it fell out of a bicyclist's backpack as he rode past me. I saw Luciano Pavarotti in a free concert at Boston's Hatch Shell that was part of the filming of his first smash hit film, the first of many box office successes for Pavarotti, who is probably the leading romantic actor of all time and it's all due to this blockbuster:First rock show was The Cure, 1986. Lammycat
Yeah, besides Disco Duck and the Sesame Street 45s, I remember having The Eagles' "In The Long Run," and "Heart Ache Tonight" on 45s, as well as many others. I can't stand the Eagles since the early 80s.
lizish
That's not what I would have expected. In my fan fiction version, I'm going to make The Skulls/Subhumans/DOA your first show. That would be much much cooler. I remember not seeing much of the concert. we had terrible seats off to the side. It wasn't till a couple years later at 17, that I started to be able to sneak into bars. I can say that I am one of the few people here to have seen XTC in all their Black Sea glory. tongue-tied lightning
not a great memory of my first record. Mainly bought 45's.It coulda been Revolver, or Tommy James & The Shondells. first concert was seeing Meatloaf when he hit it big. It was a grand sight seeing a 300 pound man rolling around the stage. and Wendy, I think Grazing in the Grass, IS a gas !
MattZ
In the Disco Duck genre, don't forget Carole King's Eating Chicken Soup with Rice. I can't remember the name of the album. First album I bought with my own money: The Police, Synchronicity (on vinyl).First concert: Squeeze at Madison Square Garden in 1989 (Katrina and the Waves opened, I think)

My mom bought that for us, but I think she liked it far more than we did.
Lammycat
The tune (based on the Maurice sendak book of the same name) "Chicken Soup with Rice" is from the show/special : Really Rosie from the mid-70s. The album's got some good tunes on it: "One Was Johnnie," etc. My kids listen to this album a lot.
rghammo
First tape: Def Leppard - HysteriaFirst concert: some southern gospel group, similar to The Oak Ridge Boys or The Statler Brothers but with more gospel and less country. I'm much prouder of the concert than the album. Many of those groups had very talented singers and excellent harmonies. The concert atmosphere is something I wouldn't enjoy today, but I loves me some good harmonizing.

cryptique
First Concert - Van Halen, Women & Children First Tour, Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo MI - Summer of 1980 I think.Several of my friends went to that show and raved about it. I wasn't all that into VH at the time (and I'd never gone to a show before) so I never even asked my parents if they'd let me.

Somnambulist
1st album: Men at Work's Business as Usual (that and Cargo both get some play still. Great records.) But...I also rmember getting the Ghostbusters soundtrack and Wall of Voodoo's Call of the West around the same time so I'm not sure which one was actually first. 1st concert with my own money, travel (LIRR to MSG), etc. was Paul McCartney's 1989 World Tour. I was a late bloomer for concerts.
