Guest Jules
I set my DVR to record Letterman, and everything's running smoothly. I sit down to watch it a few minutes ago and what happens? 80 seconds into What Light, it says "Recording over:Would you like to delete recording?" FUCK! In the future, set the DVR record settings to end a couple minutes late. I always do this now after learning the hard way. Letterman's (and others for that matter) musical performances always go overtime.
Atticus
shouldn't all the fans who don't want wilco to have more fans, especially in reaction to this new album, be delighted with a sub-par Letterman performance?
mchchef1
Here's a YouSendIt DIVX video of the song. Should look/sound better than YouTube - Letterman!WOW! Thanks man; I'm not the most computer savvy guy 'round here but the quality on that shit is insane
Wendy
Thanks, JHamm, for that lightnin' quick A+ video of last night's performance. You da' man!

From that standpoint, definitely! They sure didn't help their CD sales by that performance. The tour will sell out no matter what.As a fan of theirs, it would have been nice to show national television what they are capable of in a live setting. A missed opportunity for them to attract some new fans, make some news, and put a smile on the face of their regulars.
SlowBurn68
Is it me or is Jeff starting to look really old? Maybe he was just tired from the tour.

I could be wrong (especially about this) but this seemed like they played the song that the record company or mgmt. wanted them to play because they figured it would be the best way to sell more copies. Being a family man myself, I can't blame them for trying to sell more copies, but it seemed that they did it for that reason alone. -- Not for the excitement of sharing their music... Which is what they seem to be motivated to do 99.9% of the time.
unposed_question
You know, if this was the song Jeff (and the band) wanted to play, then I would say, yeah, I'm disappointed and respectfully disagree, but when I have my own band I can make those decisions myself. If, in fact, they played this because the record company "asked" them to because someone there thought a performance of this song would sell alot of records and get casual viewers of the Letterman show interested in Wilco, I really question the judgment behind that thinking. Since Wilco seems to have alot of flexibility regarding the execution of their artistic vision, I guess I'm highly doubtful they would defer to the record company about something like this, which leaves me with the reaction I have above. Well that's the thing. By watching that performance I'm not completely convinced that they were really into doing that song. Maybe they were. Again, I'm not a big fan of that song so it could just be me.
Sir Stewart
It's weird reading all these reactions - I saw that as their best Letterman performance ever. Huh. I usually feel what people are saying (dull, bored) when I watch other Wilco talkshow performances.

jdmel
HUHHHH?????? I don't have a problem with taking blame when I've blundered, but how could this possibly be my fault?? I hardly "leaked" this information into cyberspace. HBO aired the episode TWO days ago. I'm surprised you didn't hear it around the water cooler, virtual or otherwise...Sorry the series is ruined for you..that does suck, but blame HBO for airing the show two days before you had the chance the catch the episode... Sorry for the harsh words... The go fuck yourself was a little harsh, but I was angry about it. I went on the board to see what song was played... Ive done everything I can to avoid having the big surprise from the Sopranos ruined, I missed it Sunday night and that was the first time I could watch it since. Its not like Im mad you spoiled the ending to the Sixth Sense, it was somethin that was released about 48 hours ago.
gogo
Yeah, but if you're that concerned, you almost have to do complete information blackout to avoid hearing something like that (I spend a lot less time on VC during the Olympics, for example ). If you'd watched Letterman last night, you would have heard it.

Thank you.
ponch1028
If the band's performance may have seemed a little uninspired, one must also consider that they are the very last element of the show and get to play one song. I know that's what they expect going into the appearance, but all the same, it doesn't necessarily conjure up much motivation. I thought the performance was satisfactory but nothing special. Oh well. a.miller
it doesn't necessarily conjure up much motivation. If it were me playing of David Letterman, I would be damn sure to do my absolute best. Not saying the boys didn't...
Atticus
don't you get the feeling though that Jeff just really couldn't be bothered about how they perform for late night talk shows? I think he's probably more concerned playing to a roomful of folks than a tv appearance. just a thought...
MattZ
I predict they will play Hate it Here.

I know that's what they expect going into the appearance, but all the same, it doesn't necessarily conjure up much motivation. I thought the performance was satisfactory but nothing special. Oh well. I am unconvinced. They're uninspired on the day their first CD of new material as a lineup is released? On a nationalTV stage in New York City about to go on tour? I fault the song selection. As someone perceptibly noted, I should be happy since this will not increase their popularity and lead to any arena/amphitheatre based tours anytime soon. Other performers have been on Letterman and blown the audience away. I guess I'm surprised Wilco took a safe, conservative approach instead of being willing to challenge the audience a little. For example, had they played "Impossible Germany" and showcased their guitar playing, I would have been shocked had the audience (and Dave) not been thrilled.
giraffo
man, Letterman has got to be the unfunniest guy...I could be twice as funny if all I did an entire talk show was sit with my nose in notecards. this is the kind of public speaking disaster they teach you about in High School. Rickles was eight times funnier than Letterman, the Sopranos guy was boring, and the band was probably unimpressive to anyone not a fan.
Guest Jules
I'm sure they will play some other talk shows and choose some different songs, so everyone can be happy. For the record, I thought the performance was "pretty nice". Kind of how I feel about that song in general.
