This might sound dramatic, but this whole thing confirms my worst fear: nothing matters but money. There is absolutely nothing that can't be touched or tainted by monetary interests. I'm a big boy and I am aware of the world we live in, so I should have already known this. Still, you hold out hope that certain things are above crass commercialism. The fact though is nothing is above money. To me, this is a depressing reality - confirmed by that stupid ad campaign.

Again, I'm sorry for being dramatic, but this is how I feel. I'm not asking everyone or anyone to agree, but, as a fan, I simply wanted to express my opinion.

You're right, it does.

yeah, I think he was quitting or had quit durring Yoshimi too. not positive tho

I can't remember when Wayne Coyne said he confronted Steven Drozd about it in Fearless Freaks. I think it was after they finished up Yoshimi in upstate New York but before they started touring for it. Yoshimi sounds the most drug induced of their recent records. Kot's book kinda suggests that, up to that point in time, Tweedy never made a record substance-free. Maybe Bill Hicks was right.

yeah I was trying to think of when it was too in FF. I was just saying its hard to say drugs were a key ingrediant in those great records when they were and are capable of making great music w/o the drug usage.

you may want to start with Mr. Sandman, the fella with the sandy vagina fetish.

Your avatar is very similar to an old internet shock picture.

Word. I tend to fall on the side of the debate that some music could never have been made/perfect games thrown w.out the kicking open the doors of perception that certain substances allow. And yet it's likely a diminishing returns thing. Wayne Coyne claims to have done acid but one time--really how many times do you need to do acid?---and yet his music and live show evince a familiarity with the experience. John Lennon, I recently heard, did acid over 1000 times in his lifetime. which (i) seems impossible (ii) explains Yoko.

Wilco news

hl_vwilco.gif

As many of you are aware, Volkswagen has recently begun running a series of TV commercials featuring Wilco music.

Why? This is a subject we've discussed internally many times over the years regarding movies, TV shows and even the odd advertisement. With the commercial radio airplay route getting more difficult for many bands (including Wilco); we see this as another way to get the music out there. As with most of the above (with the debatable exception of radio) the band gets paid for this. And we feel okay about VWs. Several of us even drive them.

If you're keeping track, this is not the first time Wilco has licensed a song to or even been involved in a commercial -- most recently a TV spot for Telefonica Mobile in Spain used a Wilco song and some years prior Jeff Tweedy appeared in a campaign for Apple Computer. Wilco have licensed hundreds of songs to television shows and films worldwide... from festival-only indie films to major motion pictures and weekly TV shows.

Thus far the songs in the VW campaign are "The Thanks I Get" (a bonus track from Sky Blue Sky sessions, available for download via the Enhanced CD and via iTunes) and "You are my Face". We expect to have more details re: other songs shortly. The current plan (subject to change, like everything) is for 5 or 6 songs to be used.

That's it. Don't believe everything you read unless you read it here.

Wilco has licensed

Typical, going with the American grammar...

nah I'm sure they thought their fans would love them unconditionally but I guess they were wrong since lost so many fans because of a 30 second commercial.

Actually, 5 or 6 commercials. Including the guitar solo part of "you are my face" (so painfull to watch/hear). But whos counting?

Yikes, etc.

That there is a controversy over a decision to sell music by people in the music business spins my mind. Jeff and Wilco are lucky to be able to make a living playing music-sure- but they are a very hard working band. I check their concert schedule- they must perform over a hundred nights a year, the travel has to be brutal and ask anyone who travels for their business-its no picnic. Being way from family and friends, arriving with little control over your situation, and forget any control over diet, sleep and exercise. This band earns every penny the hard way.

You've clearly already addressed this issue in your own life, which is great for you...seriously. I'm not sure, however, why you feel the need to try to convince other people to think the same way.
