"Advertising is the greatest art form of the twentieth century."

Marshall McLuhan

Here's the thing nickerson... Yes rampant consumerism is problematic. Yes, there are many people who see homes, cars, clothing etc. as a viable replacement for self worth. Duh. No brainer, bubba. I don't happen to personally subscribe to that philosophy. Nor do I watch television. Personal choice.

The problem lies in the fact that you have allowed your own personal philosophy grow so disproportionately that you feel entitled to bludgeon others with it. In a perfect universe, artists (and their families if you would allow that) could live like monks, being fed, clothed, housed and medically insured through the kindess of their fans. The world doesn't work that way. It ain't a perfect world. Art is a process, but to make a living at it, it has to become a commodity as well. So whether it's the church buying it, or fans buying it or fucking Volkswagon buying it, what gives you the right to tell an artist how to disseminate it and who he gets to sell it to?

That bludgeon

They don't owe any of their fans shit.

Without fans a band is nothing. They end up on Bloodshot or New West, playing for free beer, schwag weed and clumsy gropes with 4th tier, sandy vagina groupies in stinky tour vans. :ohwell

They owe their fans good music. That's it really. Personally I don't think they delivered as effectively as usual with this newest album, but I don't think it was for lack of trying. They certainly don't owe the fans an explanation for business decisions.

Are you really entertaining the fantasy that any of the members of the band are having ANY problem being fed, clothed, housed, medically insured, or "making a living at it"? They made this decision to gain additional revenue/exposure at the expense of cheapening the music to a huge number of their longtime fans... that to me is a very selfish and disappointing decision.

what's the difference between wilco being used in a soundtrack to a movie produced by say universal or warner brothers than being in a 30 second commercial? oh wait I know! the movie companies are much larger corperations so lets not say anything about that. Why stop there screw wilco for being signed to a major label! how dare they!

They might be well off. Honestly I have no idea. Even if they're doing fine, it doesn't mean they aren't entitled to try to save up for retirement, future generations, etc. Regardless, the question is, do you like the music? If yes, then what's the problem? If no, then why do you care what they do with it?

no they should have said "No thanks we already have enough money we don't want any more, we don't want to promote our music any more either." that would have been the right thing to do.

Here I'll do the math for you:

1. How to Fight Loneliness was in Girl Interrupted

2. Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie were in Girl Interrupted

3. Winona and Angelina are both super smoking hot and by some standards a little crazy

4. Winona and Angelina have no gratuitous nude scenes or hot locked up lesbian sex in this movie

5. Therefore, Jeff Tweedy et al. owe me $7.50 for a missed opportunity/ wasted time.

Dude, did you not see that part in IATTBYH where they were at Wendy's and the dude only had $6?!!?!?!?!? They probably now (I hope) make more money that I do - 41K USD per annum - but they ain't the Rolling Stones, that's for sure.

Because all money is good money, and because all publicity is good publicity...

I guess I'm coming from my own experiences, ie. the many times I've participated in the scrambles to get tickets to the shows before they sell out, which nearly every one does quickly...

All the hubub over a song that is not commercially available in a commercial that never mentions the band directly or by inference.

I got an kick out of it and I managed to tell the people I was watching the Cavs game with all about Wilco. I hope Jeff and the boys make a fucking MINT on this.

Jesus frickin christ...I hope the glass house I live in is safe...how about YOU?

Great post Crowjack...

I got a kick out of the commercial too!!

nah I'm sure they thought their fans would love them unconditionally but I guess they were wrong since lost so many fans because of a 30 second commercial.

Wasn't there some drug use involved back then? Steven "Elliott" Smith ran through $1500 a day to get his fix of whatever he was on. Same for the Flaming Lips dude. Tweedy, Smith and Drozd made some amazing records while on all those substances. Just beautiful.

They also made amazing records not on drugs.

This sums up where I'm coming from. This might sound dramatic, but this whole thing confirms my worst fear: nothing matters but money. There is absolutely nothing that can't be touched or tainted by monetary interests. I'm a big boy and I am aware of the world we live in, so I should have already known this. Still, you hold out hope that certain things are above crass commercialism. The fact though is nothing is above money. To me, this is a depressing reality - confirmed by that stupid ad campaign.

Again, I'm sorry for being dramatic, but this is how I feel. I'm not asking everyone or anyone to agree, but, as a fan, I simply wanted to express my opinion.
