Wendy
this is ridiculous, if anything via chicago sold out by being so collectively upset about this.. its the music BUSINESSTheshua, there are 5000-some registered members at VC, and just a handful are upset about this. They are a very vocal minority, and for the most part are presenting their opinions well. It is a good topic and most of it is interesting reading. How you took that to be "Via Chicago being collectively upset about this" -- I'm not sure. It's a total non-issue to me personally because I don't watch much TV, I'm not affected by Wilco's decision to let VW use their songs as background music for their ads, and I still love Wilco and the new album. The songs will still be there for me tomorrow, as pretty as ever, after the ads have faded.

JUDE
On a personal level, you may lure me in to at least consider a particular product...but if the taste/performance/design/etc. isn't worth the price tag you've attached to it and I can get the same thing that has little to no brand attached to it, i'll do it. Ahem...
EL the Famous
Where I got it less important than where it comes from. Don't make me go analogman and go back in the archives to find where I posted that months and months ago...and I stole it from the Beastie Boys message board. Bit protection. beadsman
That guy just called my grandmother a "brand." Jesus. Bigger brand: Jesus, the Devil, your grandmother or WILCO? a ze frank classic, riffing on marketing and semiotics: http://www.zefrank.com/theshow/archives/2007/01/010406.html one of ze frank's original goof songs: http://www.zefrank.com/theshow/archives/2006/05/051106.html When I first watched the show dude seemed to be sick all the time. Found out later he wasn't sick sick that often, just hungover a lot.
caliber66
I definitely stole the idea from that, but I went out and found it again, on my own, in a larger format.

EL the Famous
ahhhh, but to me they are worth the $...not because of the brand itself, but the design principles followed in some of their shoes. in other words, their shoes look fucking fly as hell. besides, when was the last time you saw an ad for the superstar or campus...all their ads are for their athletic line/apparel. these motherfuckers sell themselves...TRACTOR BEAMS, bitches! i've actually gotten back into converse chuck taylor's as well...and have been known to rock a pair of coffee colored suede pumas now and again. Dreamin'
Move into the mountains then. Kidding. I don't disagree w/ the essence of what you are saying Judy...i'd rather see more public art than advertising...mountains than billboards. I'm just saying that the billboard doesn't really ruin the mountain itself, but just your view of it. Also, if you are going to try and stop something like that from happening...one could challenge you'd get more mileage rallying against the property owners versus the companies that would take dvantage of the available space. One/several property versus millions of businesses.I know. Just a bit of my frustration showing there. In this case, I'm really conflicted because the Squamish Nation is doing this (on their land) and they could really use the money.

viatroy
someone who wants to see their art continue to have life and make a living in making said art, must make it a business at some level or put a business structure around it to keep perpetuating it. sad but true. in unrelated news, Jesus was a socialist. EL the Famous
sad but true. definitely true...but isn't it sad only if the business aspect isn't successful enough to allow you to continue to create it or that it's so successful that it overshadows the actual act of making it? another tangent...is a graphic artist that desgins or produces original 'artwork' for advertisements any less of an artist because said 'art' is generating revenue? can said 'art' no longer be called 'art' once it is used to sell something? i'm probably not the person to ask, I as own numerous books like this: sorry, just find this whole discussion fascinating. Dan-O
sad but true. in unrelated news, Jesus was a socialist.Really? He encouraged charity, sure. But did he use government to force individuals to be charitable? Big difference.
