alison the wilca
i totally agree with JT being a quiet disc... especially when you get to Mothers of the Disappeared. I always have to crank the volume WAY up. I'm on my 3rd or 4th disc of the Joshua Tree... its the only cd I've ever "used up" like a cassette.
Analogman
I've listened to their music, and it's never done anything for me. You are not listening to it right.

EL the Famous
You must be listening to Pop. ...which is in my top 3 favorite U2 albums AND i'm an 'oldster.'
aricandover
You must be listening to Pop. nah, I remember my mom's boyfriend (who had a huge impact on a lot of the music I listen to) loving U2 when I was a kid. I think, War, was probably the first album of their's that he brought home, and I couldn't stand it. I also had some friends who were really into them, and I just didn't get it. Even today, my wife is a huge U2 fan, and I've tried see if I could get into anything they've done. they just don't click with me.

mountain bed
My son brought home a book a couple of years ago by a Presbyterian minister (if I recall correctly) that tore apart Bono's lyrics and found Bible passages that corresponded to them. Pretentious, perhaps, but I found it to be an intersting read.

In fact, when I was a younger guy that kinda was a revelation for me - that if you were religious you didn't have to be a teetotaler. I think those dudes always enjoyed a pint of Guinness. ction
I can totally understand why some people don't like U2. Hell, I love a lot of their albums and still think they're kinda douchey sometimes. Especially around the time of Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum.
Sir Stewart
Rattle & Hum has been my favorite for like 5 years running now. Kinda wild.

About two weeks ago I was listening to this on my ipod through the car speakers. I had to crank it just to hear the songs and I told my wife that they really need to remaster the album. Little did I know that it was already in progress with some extra goodies included!!
Teh Fan
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I liked Unforgettable Fire better. Not by much though. I do too, by a lot. TJT was the beginning of the end. Still a great album.

sureshot
Achtung/Zooropa/Pop, to me, was the golden era for U2. Ironically, they've turned into what they satirized during that period.
Edie
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I liked Unforgettable Fire better. Not by much though. Yeah, UF is the best of their records, though it doesn't have a song in my top five probably. I just think it has such a great flow and atmosphere, which makes it a great listen from end to end. The Joshua Tree was the first time I was anxious or even knew when a new record was coming out.... I also recall this, and was acutely aware when it was coming out. I stayed out of work that day to wait to hear it on the radio before it was for sale! However, from the first strains of "streets" it absolutely did not disappoint in any way. It came out on the heels of the Amnesty tour where they totally stole the show. I still have that on VHS tape where they do "maggie's farm" and "bad" and the crowd's intensity is palpable. Then The Police came on as a special reunion thingy and they were ho-hum. If that were what was being released on the DVD, I would be all over it. I might buy it anyway. "Running To Stand Still" is an amazing song. I cry over this one too. The couple of versions I have seen on tape are just stunning. I saw them at the Meadowlands at some point in May 1987. Great show - Bono may have thought he was Jesus, but we all did too. Lone Justice opened up for them. I saw this same show -- in Chicago in April I think. I loved it though I was pretty far back and couldn't see much. It was the first show that I stood for the entire thing..... Achtung/Zooropa/Pop, to me, was the golden era for U2. For me, it's War/UF/JT/R&H/AB though I also really like Zooropa and ATYCLB.
DueReflection
with or w/o you? still haven't found what i'm looking for? Bono w/ the acoustic guitar draped around his back? these are the songs and moments that make me want to vomit... The Unforgettable Fire was a great U2 album... then i don't know wtf they were trying to be and wasn't the least bit interested again until achtung/zooropa.. probably the most overrated, most bloated and overhyped band in history. Atticus
I've always been a little disappointed that they don't seem to vary their performances of some songs much at all. I've also always been a little thankful that they don't seem to vary their performances of some songs much at all. I've had this same personality disorder over R.E.M. as well. tongue-tied
When listening to U2, even with songs I can recognize as very good, unique, and with no obvious flaws, I feel like I'm being lied to.
