cryptique
i'm saying in terms of mass appeal and memorable melody, i'd argue pretty hard that What Light? and Either Way are the most easily digestable and memorable melodies on SBS, especially for people not familiar with Wilco, which is all i was saying.I disagree on "What Light," but probably because I've never cared much for that song. I don't think that's a good first impression song for Wilco. It's slower, very repetitive, and doesn't really show the songwriting talent, musical skill, or passion of the band. If I were trying to introduce Wilco to a friend, that's one of the last songs I'd ever consider using to try and hook them.
Twisted Acres
Whatever song they start, they should stop it about 15 seconds in and then go into "Radio, Radio".

H.Stone
Kick ass on Da Total Pros!! on SNL! I'll stick with my original guess of Walken and Hate It Here, but Thanks I Get would be nice, too.

If I were trying to introduce Wilco to a friend, that's one of the last songs I'd ever consider using to try and hook them.i'm saying based just on Sky Blue Sky, since that's what they'll be playing songs off of, which doesn't really have too many melodies with mass appeal. What Light is basically a Dylan song imo, with a pretty catchy and easily digestible hook. and you say it's repetitive, that's what 90% of top 40 or songs with tons of mass appeal ARE . the average person doesn't care about songwriting talent, musical skill, or passion, that's what i'm trying to point out. this isn't about trying to get a friend into Wilco, i'm talking about songs that the average SNL viewer would hear and think "hey, that's pretty catchy, i should maybe check them out". what songs off SBS would you say are catchier or would fit in better on Top 40 or have wider appeal? Hate It Here is catchy, but like i said, the lyrics are a bit too weird for the masses imo. Sky Blue Sky does, but imo it's much more "dull" than What Light is, and is basically Far Far Away pt. 2. You Are My Face is pretty catchy, but that was also my 2nd pick for songs to play too. Either Way would be the other song with the most mass appeal to me. Walken maybe, but find that song to be kinda lame until the very end when it speeds up. these songs definitely don't have the potential for mass appeal: Impossible Germany, Side With The Seeds, Shake It Off, Please Be Patient, Leave Me Like You Found Me, On and On and On, etc. even before it was announced, What Light? was pretty obviously gonna be the first single to me the first time I heard Sky Blue Sky, so i'm not surprised that's what they (or Nonesuch) picked, no matter how little you or anyone likes it (i didn't say it was the best song or anything). solace
Agreed. I like the song, but that's no way to showcase this band. i agree... i wasn't talking about songs that showcase the band, i was talking about songs that would appeal to the average music listener is all. i agree if it was to pick just the 2 "most impressive" songs off Sky Blue Sky, i'd say Impossible Germany and Side With The Seeds. Jonesie
Side with the Seeds should definitly be one of the songs. For the second song I'm not sure. It'd be nice if they went into the back catalog a little bit for it, maybe pulling out "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"
dunnright00
Here's what I want:Hate it Here & Side with the Seeds because I'm realistic and know it will be from SBS. Here's what They'll play:Impossible Germany(they can cut it down to 4min.) and Thanks I get, but in the opposite order. So is it confirmed that Mon. will be Conan?
solace
Here's what They'll play:Impossible Germany(they can cut it down to 4min.) and Thanks I get, but in the opposite order. that would be the best case scenario
dunnright00
My DVR guide says Conan on Monday is Super Furry Animals, which in itself is pretty cool. And Flava Faaaaaav!!!!!
sky blue bats
if the total pros are gonna be there its obviously: Hate It Here and Walken. Duh! :ohwell
remraf
Assuming the band won't play any oldies AND wouldn't consider playing "The Thanks I Get", I'm pulling for "Walken" and "Hate it Here." For what ever reason, I find the speculation of what they'll play to be intriguing. It's as if we all realize this is a national stage where the band can reach a lot of people - what 2 songs off of SBS would make the best impression? On another note, I know their songs got exposure in the VW ads, but I really believe that a lot of people don't know who's playing those songs in the commercials. For instance, a colleague at work came up to me telling me about the 2nd time he had heard of Wilco (the first being from me). I asked him if he had paid attention to any recent VW commercials. He thought about it, and agreed he had probably seen a couple. I told him all of the recent ones had Wilco playing over them...he was like "HUH!" Okbye
Chris_H_2
if the total pros are gonna be there its obviously: Hate It Here and Walken. Duh! :ohwell This is exactly what I think. In that order as well.

solace
And I'm saying that "What Light" is going to make a lot of people in that "average SNL viewer" demographic say "this song is stupid, this band sucks." I don't really care about "wider appeal," I just don't want them playing a song ("What Light") that makes people dislike them on first listen, and that's what I think that song will do. right... i was just saying that the reason bands go on SNL is for promo and to reach a wider audience, not to please the fans they already have. that's fine you don't like What Light, i can understand that, but we're also huge longtime and probably somewhat jaded Wilco fans too... to give you an example, the one time i played Sky Blue Sky on a roadtrip, that and Either Way were the only songs my wife enjoyed (she's never really gotten into Wilco before). not saying that means everything, but... yeah. it's also the song that gets the most play here on 89.3 the Current here from SBS too (along w/ You Are My Face). i guarantee you the average person would enjoy What Light over Impossible Germany at least...
