Wow. I think you are underestimating their capabilities a bit. There's no magical formula, of course, but Warren sounds good to these ears in what I've heard so far. He does have solos, too. I think it's a noble effort on their part to put the time in that they have been with practicing, too. Not sure how you come to the conclusion that they're under-rehearsed. They've got a repertoire of tunes to toy with and interpret that I think will sound fresh. Mimicing older formats (and Garcia solos/parts) would be a lot more painful to my ears than in re-interpreting old tunes.

ed. re: big venues= Supply and demand. I'd rather they weren't doing arenas but they can and they are.

Differences of opinion, is all. Cheers.

i know it goes without saying, but there's no jerry! and i just don't think warren fits. he's a rock, blues guitarist...balls to the wall...he can't do some sweet solo on sugaree at all. again, no offense to him. if anything, they should have mark karan at least. he doesnt solo either but at least he's a little lighter to the ears when it comes to dead tunes.

As we break past the midpoint of March, we have music spanning 20 years minus a day in Grateful Dead history, from 1971 to 1991.

It's been a while, so we figured we'd focus this week on some shows that took place at the Oakland Coliseum Arena in February, 1990. These shows were in the middle of a string of concerts recorded to 24 track analog tape by John Cutler and Le Mobile, a recording truck the band used for many recordings, including the bulk of shows that happened May, 1989 through April, 1990. Several commercial releases have been produced from these recordings, including Without A Net, Dozin' At Knick, Nightfall Of Diamonds, Terrapin Limited, as well as some parts of the So Many Roads boxed set. Not only are the recordings phenomenal, but the band was playing particularly well in 1989-1990, so there are hopefully more releases to come from these shows.

Our first stop this week is on 3/18/71 in St. Louis, where the band played two great shows. From the second night, we have the classic 1971 jam featuring Truckin

That 3/17/91 show David played is a very strong show throughout. It really is a shame that R&C wasn't played more often.

Sat in the sun today and listened to Grateful Dead while reading Bukowski. Might be the best day I have had in a long time. Without the recommendations of people here that would never have happened so thank you!

I wonder what that little dig was about. There must have been some legal stuff going down.

There was and evidently it has been resolved because they have started to release his shows again.

I have no idea what was the final settlement was. (As longs as the music is preserved and stored properly)

This whole soap opera with the Garcia estate got tedious and rather boring too boot. (pun intended).

Obviously the Dead organization wants to keep Garcia last wife's name out of the picture as much as possible.

A website about the Bickershaw Festival.

The afternoon and much of the night belonged to a bunch of Marin County cowpokes and bar band devotees. The New Riders had flown into Manchester Airport that weekend to be met by the whole Grateful Dead family on the road. After their band trucks were sabotaged at a gig in France the Dead entourage had decided to stick together and come to Manchester en-masse, all 48 cowboys and girls, band, ladies and road crew. A travelling rock and roll circus a long ways from home.

There only two camps as far as the Grateful Dead were concerned. You either loved em or you hated them. Hip journo

Billboard.com article:

The Dead Trip Up Scalpers, Prep 150 Songs For Tour

The Dead are offering front row seats for charity auction.

March 27, 2009 09:15 AM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit

The Dead are hoping that in addition to raising money for its Rex Foundation and other respective charities, an auction of prime seats for its upcoming tour will also put those tickets in the hands of fans, not scalpers.

"We want to keep away from all of that," percussionist Mickey Hart tells Billboard.com. "You always keep your fingers crossed that the bad guys don't get in there and turn profits for themselves." Tickets have been turning up on secondary sale sites such as Tickets Now and StubHub, but the Dead has also decided not to offer Platinum Tickets through Ticketmaster.

Guitarist Bob Weir concurred that he's long felt any type of scalping "should be illegal. Nobody benefits but a few people. The band doesn't get any of that money. The people have to pay more money for what they should rightfully be getting for way less. It's immensely frustrating."

Under the auction plan, which is being operated through Charity Folks (www.charityfolks.com), the Dead is auctioning off the first five rows center for its shows to high bidders. Memorabilia and meet-and-greet opportunities are also up for grabs. The group hopes the auctions will raise $250,000 for the Rex Foundation, an arts charity the group established in 1983, as well as for the Further Foundation, the Unbroken Chain Foundation and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

"Charities need money. They need help, especially these days," says percussionist Bill Kreutzmann. "This puts those seats into the hands of our fans, who are not only getting great seats and good music but also know the money is going to charitable organizations."

"The first gig as the Grateful Dead was a benefit," notes Weir. "It always seemed to us that you get some, you give some back. It makes good sense. It's just something we've always done, and this latest round is, I think a well-conceived, somewhat newer version of it."

The Dead -- which will also include fellow Grateful Dead founder Phil Lesh on bass, guitarist Warren Haynes and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti -- are gearing up for the tour, the group's first since 2004, which kicks off April 12 in Greensboro, N.C. The group already did a 12 days of rehearsal, during which Weir says it prepared a whopping 150 songs, with another prep run planned before the opening date.

The band is set to perform on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on April 23, and have even planned an interview appearance with the ladies of "The View."

"We're trying to bring out as many tunes as we can," Weir says. "We're doing tunes I haven't played in 35 years or so, but that said there'll be all the old favorites..."It's kind of a big task to pull the band out of mothballs. The impetus to bring the Dead back around just had to grow until it made sense to all of us. We've got a fair bit of unfinished business, and we all know that. At some point it just made sense for us to get back to it."

March 30 - April 5, 2009

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

As we close out March and begin April, we have some tasty selections from the latter part of the Brent Mydland era of the Grateful Dead, specifically from 1988 and 1990.

Our first selection this week is an entire first set from the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ, on 3/31/88, consisting of Hell In A Bucket>Sugaree, Me And My Uncle>Mexicali Blues, Brown-Eyed Women, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Ramble On Rose, Let It Grow. This was the middle night of a three night run at the Meadowlands, each of which featured some outstanding moments. The tour overall was a very good one, with those stellar nights in Hampton preceding this run in New Jersey.

Next up, from two years later and also from the greater New York area, at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on 3/30/90, we have the second set opening jam of Iko Iko, Playing In The Band>China Doll>Uncle John

stage the night of April Fools and be on another member's instuments, exactly what they had done 4/1/80. If you haven't heard the gawd awful

opener of Promsed Land, LOL stream it here:

I've read about those songs, but never heard them. I can't recall exactly, but I think those tracks were done around the same time as the Rolling Thunder tracks.
