Love him or hate him, there was a pretty interesting article about Mariano Rivera in Sunday's NYT Magazine. The on-line version includes a really cool infographic detailing his cut fastball.

Great piece, and lot's of really cool stuff to go along with it.

The closer's role may be overrated in my eyes, but Mo's dominance in the playoff's and ability (and willingness) to go more than one inning when he needs to sets him apart.

Boy, that NL All Star roster is something else, huh. Really swinging for the fences to end that losing streak.

Sans one of the leading MVP candidates in Joey Votto, of course.

Wouldn't it be a real bitch if the NL won on an Omar Infante walk-off!

If Pelfrey gets to face Rolen again, he should totally drill his ass for that World Cup-soccer-player-level acting job he did last night.

Maybe Pelfrey should worry about not loading the bases with no outs and then giving up a single, double, and triple to a team's 7-9 hitters instead of worrying about Scott Rolen doing what 99% of major leaguers would do in that situation.

Also might help if he would strike a batter out every now and then. 9 Ks in his last 28 innings has a lot more to do with his recent struggles than Scott Rolen.

Sure, but I think it would be a karmic balancing to hit Rolen and then be like, "Now that's what it's like to be hit by the pitch, Gramps."

Well, in all fairness to Rolen (who I don't really like), the ball did technically hit him, at least from what I saw on MLBN last night. Looked like it caught the jersey.

I think the only thing I can hate about Mo is he's so goddamned impossible to hate.

A fan fell from the 2nd deck of Arlington stadium during the Rangers/Indians game. He was apparently moving all extremeties and speaking at the hospital. Four who he landed on were injured but treated on site. The looks of players and other spectators who witnessed the fall were telling.

It's sad but the sole thought that popped into my mind was that scene in The Naked Gun where that woman falls onto somebody during the "Enrico Pallazzo" scene. :ohwell

The greatest feat in all of baseball was accomplished last night. Better than a perfect game, IMO.

Johan Santana pitches a complete game shutout and hits a home run.

The closest thing possible in team sports to single-handedly winning a game.

Guest Jules

That HR was 1 of his 9 career RBIs. That's gotta be low compared to other pitchers in the NL. Congrats to Johan. Love watching former Twins still doing well.

edit: 1st career HR, BTW

Well, it's only his 3rd year in the NL.

Wow, that Rockies game last night was incredible. Behind 9 to 3 in the bottom of the ninth and they end up scoring 9 points to win. Ryan Franklin just got worked over.

God I love Johan Santana. See, if the NL had a DH rule, we would have been robbed of a beautiful thing.

Harkens me back to 1971 and Rick Wise: Dude pitched a no-hitter and hit 2 home runs for the Phillies. Wise was traded to St. Louis for Steve Carlton the next spring. I'd say the Phillies got the best of all things possible in signing Wise(ly).
