  1. There's a mini-Wilco/VW type blow up happening on the Backstreets forum over the WalMart exclusivity rights for the new Greatest Hits. Lots of very valid, legitimate points, followed by lots of blowhards. And "Magic" gruesome? Really? I couldn't disagree with that more.
  2. I think that latest, greatest hits release is specific to E Street Band releases, and is being released to drum up hype for the new album and the Super Bowl. Completely and totally unnecessary in my opinion.
  3. I keep an ever rotating stack of vinyl out by the stereo and right now that stack includes the following: Undertones-"self-titled" Big Star - "#1 Record" Dr. Dog - "Fate" Cheap Trick -"self-titled" Aretha Franklin - "Live at the Fillmore West" MMJ - "At Dawn" The Byrds - "Farther Along" Prince - "Dirty Mind" Smokey Robinson and The Miracles - "Away We A Go-Go" Wilco - "Being There" Mott The Hoople - "R'N'R Queen" Neil Young - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" Sharon Jones and the DapKings - "Naturally" The Rip Offs - "Got A Record" The Temptations - "Puzzle People"
  4. Sooie, I don't think the album has leaked, but there are 30 second snippets for every song floating around, I'm skipping those. A-Man, As for your point of Bruce having a lean catalog for someone who has been recording for 35 years there are a few reasons for that: A- the stop work order between BTR and Darkness, B- He was a notorious tinkerer and perfectionist during those first 10-12 years, C- For everything that's released there's probably a whole other album's worth unreleased due to his obsessiveness over sequencing, mood, etc from album to album, D-He definitely went through some sort
  5. That photo history of his face was one of the mos disturbing things I've ever seen. By the end of it, I was peeking through my fingers like a kid watching a horror film, Yikes!
  6. It seems highly unlikely that this will happen this winter. It's already the end of the year and there's no announcement, let's hope this time is spent finishing up the new album. I'm sure they'll get around to another residency when the time is right.
  7. Out of 30 plus shows, I've only ever been in the balcony on a few occasions, last night included and indeed it is an entirely different experience. The venue itself had a very old-timey feel to it with a 3/4 wrap balcony that was deep all the way around and packed to the rafters. As someone who is almost always on the floor and would always prefer to stand and rock out, it just sort of makes sense to sit in the balcony. When the whole audience finally did stand for the encores, I almost got dizzy. You certainly can't move around that much for fear of falling down several rows. Seeing the whole
  8. I think it's #1 on the Greg Wells critic list as well.
  9. Good to see "Forget the Flowers" in there. Note to band: You can go ahead and roll that one over for Baltimore and if you want to dedicate it to Greg and Annette that's okay by me as well.
  10. Holy Crap New Year's is rapidly approaching. I'm already starting to wonder about what the weather will be like, not too mention the setlist.
  11. Well to mix it up a bit, it was sad, but timely to see Maddux go. His career wins total will likely never be passed again.
  12. "A Shot In The Arm," has been played on playoff tv broadcasts in recent years.
  13. Watch out with that Oregon Hill comment Justin! 13 proud years! Ed who runs Mama Zu and Edo's also runs 8 1/2, the takeout place on Strawberry Street by the Video Fan.
  14. Man I showed up at that Norva show ridiculously early for the non-existent GA line. I saw just about every member of the band out walking around and in the mall across the street. Jeff bought a pair of shoes. At another show there, I once saw Ian Astbury of The Cult teaching his young son how to ride a skateboard. It was a very touching thing to see.
  15. I just worked at the Landmark the other night and it is indeed a spectacular venue. There are some impending stage/dock upgrades coming soon to make the place more modern and hopefully to attract more shows, other than the typical orchestra shows that dominate now. I think they could pull a two-nighter at the National, it's around the same size as 9:30 in D.C. and they've done multiples there. I think the real key though is to get in touch with local bookers at the National or Toads or wherever and convince them that it would be a worthwhile venture. Meanwhile are you going up to Baltimore?
  16. Some devastating love songs, some killer rock anthems, some off the beaten path experimental tunes, no drone, no banjo, big hooks, maybe some whistling in one song, at least one song that destroys me in the way that "Theologians" does, more Television inspired guitar interplay, lyrics with more depth than most of SBS, an album that will totally piss off Pitchfork.
  17. I'm a moderate Young fan, but a much bigger Springsteen fan. Bruce does tons of cameos on stage with lessor artists, dropping in at clubs, inviting band members to join him on stage, etc. I don't follow the day to day nuances of Neil, so I don't really have a jumping off point. As far as Wilco joining him, "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," is a no brainer, and Uncle Tupelo covered it regularly, in fact I think they even did it at their last show. Let's just hope that some kind of stage sharing happens.
  18. Sounds like an interesting show. I guess if that's true that the various fill-in drummers picked the songs they wanted to play on, that explains the more varied setlist. Doesn't seem like too much of a stretch that Neil could possibly join Wilco on stage if they continue to perform "I Shall Be Released." How did the "Being There" rock block go over with the crowd? This one I would've liked to seen.
  19. I bet that they always play "New Madrid" in St. Louis.
  20. Sort of an obsessed fan here (I have about a dozen Bruce books), so maybe my opinion is too heavy handed, but I for one think his current run of the last 6 years is remarkable. He is definitely a lot more fearless in his choices and willing to take more risks. "Devils and Dust," is loaded with good to great, heady topical and political tunes. That tour was way fun, I wish I had seen more than the two shows I saw. I'm not too super hot on the first two tracks from "Working on a Dream," but no E Street Band album has let me down yet and I expect no different here. I wonder if Danny Federici appe
  21. That's not much of a dream setlist. 90% of that gets played all the time.
  22. Has anyone read any of Kotlowitz's books? he's written some excellent contemporary books on race relations. My favorite is "There are no Children here," which takes place in the early 90's in a Chicago housing project.
  23. He is on some kind of prolific run these days. I need to start saving for tour dates now!
