  1. Burn to Shine fell into disrepair because they lost their distributor. I would think -Anti would do it, but maybe they're not too into DVDs.
  2. No need to apologize. I hear you and agree. The manipulation of the concept of patriotism, and the idea that an ideology has a monopoly on it is one of the more corrosive fallacies in our political discussions as a country. It's interesting stuff. I agree with what the folks said above about there being examples of this on both sides, but I also agree with you that it's a more common attack from folks on the right. That McCain moment was sharp. You could see in his eyes- it was when he realized he'd lost it. He was courting lunatics. The republican majority was falling victim to willf
  3. What so many of these finger pointers don't have the courage, or intelligence, or honesty to say is that their opponents clearly love America. They just have a different vision of it. One might be metropolitanism and the other a cultural theocracy, but they both see evidence for their values reflected in some aspect of America. When we allow ourselves to get apolitical we can just philosophically marvel at Jeff Tweedy, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon's (among others) favorite question: what does America mean?
  4. This is totally insane: http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2015/05/02/403865824/texas-governor-deploys-national-guard-to-stave-off-obama-takeover
  5. Good point. America is becoming more accustomed (if not still entrenched) on liberal approaches towards social issues, some how fiscally the country is still full of bed-wetters. Could we have made enough progress that a candidate could say "I believe two people, no matter what gender, who are ready to make a lifelong commitment should be recognized by the state," and some moderate Republican voter would say, "Well a lot of people are saying that, and I'm not sure that's where we need to go as a country." Yet if the same candidate said "Poverty is an institutional force in our nation whi
  6. I've got a story about those clowns from my touring days.
  7. It's so weird seeing the Diamondbacks ahead of the Giants right now. It's pretty awesome that the Mets are a legit team this season. Lots of interesting stuff going on. Seems like the Cubs investment is paying off decently.
  8. I saw these guys in Denver a week ago. It totally lived up to my hopes and dreams of seeing the Replacements. Not sure about how a new record will go. All the music blogs have been talking about how they debuted a new song, "Whole Foods Blues". Having heard the song, I'm not sure it's the serious "leak" of new material they're hyping it as. More of a comedy blues jam. I imagine they'll have some less tongue-in-cheek rockers to offer though.
  9. My Rox have yet to suck. Took the Giants, but man those Dodgers are looking tough this year!
  10. I can't wait to watch the GOP candidates rip each other to shreds. Gaffe season is coming, and I don't think Emperor Hillary is immune either!
  11. My little neighborhood brewery finally brought back their sour stout that legend has it was initially an accident. But, now that it's getting warm I might have to see which American micro-brew can make the best fake pilsner.
  12. I agree. Eureka is a close second. Bad Timing is more for people who really like "that kind of thing".
  13. Wishful Thinking (though it's getting a lot of love here) Sky Blue Sky Whole Love
  14. There's a few ways this type of deal usually goes: - A person who sees the Jim Crow era as odious, but does not agree with action being taken to avoid this type of discrimination in the context of LGBT rights. When the connection between the two is created it causes extreme discomfort due to a direct revealing of the double standard, a condition known as cognitive dissonance. - The person in question resents being asked to answer for the crimes of a larger group they could be associated with. This was the point from many enlightened Muslims who were asked to publicly denounce the Charlie
  15. Iran and North Korea are very different.
  16. Well, you may have been convinced by Netanyahu, but Obama sure wasn't. The fact that the Saudi's want nothing short of Iranian annihilation is not reason for us to step away from assurances for a more peaceful situation. If there's anything the Israelis and Saudis are really worried about it's economic growth in Iran. They have no bomb, and now we know they're not getting one any time soon.
  17. Once again the GOP's criticism of the shortcomings of this deal offer no realistic alternative. We've been doing the sanction thing hard, for a while. It has done nothing. Typically (as in Russia), U.S. sanctions do more to harm innocent poor citizens forced to live under shitty regimes populated by people unaffected by sanctions. They do build some abstract form of economic pressure, but it hasn't worked. Iran will have nuclear power, which is ultimately better for the climate. They won't be able to build nuclear weapons any time soon, the main difference is that time is more clearly d
  18. Poor old Rockies. I can't decide if I'm more apprehensive about how little was invested to renew our decrepit bullpen, or how freaking good both of the California teams are right now. A few years ago I decided for no reason to hate the Diamondbacks, which is good because I get to watch the Rockies beat them with some frequency. Beyond that I just have to see if jokers like the Mets or the Rays come to town to watch a home field win. NL West is formidable, and CO owners are cheapskates.
  19. Yeah, once again I have to say: thanks Hixter. It's a pleasure disagreeing with you. Seriously. You're a good dude, which makes it nicer to argue with you when our biases conflict. Also, there is a growing number of ultra-religious organizations creating a fictitious sense of persecution to fuel their attempts at governing our society based on their backwards biblical interpretations. Also, racism and poverty are so culturally and systematically woven into how our country operates that we're morally obligated to implement progressive action at a governmental level. Also, taken as a who
