  1. Dear Nels, Remember how much fun you guys had at the Jazz Kitchen in Indy? Please come back - we need you here! Regards, MB
  2. It's just typical Steve King, dudes. I've been watching his insane gibberish on CSPAN for years, and until michele Bachman decided to try and knock him off his throne he was the undisputed King Of Crazy. It's really unfathomable how this guy continues to get elected. CMON IOWA, you can do better than this - hell, he even makes my nutjob Rep. Mike Pence sound like a great statesman.
  3. Look around again It's the same old circle You see...it's got to be It says right here on page 43 That you should grab ahold of it Else you'll find It's passed you by Rainbows all around Can you find the silver And gold It'll make you old The river can be hot or cold And you should dive right into it Else you'll find It's passed you by Pass it around one more time I think I'll have a swallow of wine Life is fine Even with the ups and downs And you should have a sip of it Else you'll find It's passed you by
  4. Damn, this is not fair. Wilco is my favorite current band (although Califone is closing in on them, quickly), but if you look at the long haul it's not even close. The Dead are so far above ANY other group for me. I won't list any others, but there are many. Sorry, Jeff, I still heart ya!
  5. I totally agree. It's not "Close To The Edge", but that's not really fair. CTTE is arguably the greatest Prog LP of all time.
  6. I never had a beef with Day Job, in fact I kinda liked it. As Lammy said it was VERY similar musically to US Blues, but that's not really a knock on the song (Push Comes To Shove is a close relative of Ramble On Rose, for example) I think the reason it was despised by Heads was that they just didn't want to hear lyrics that told them to keep working, seeing that many of 'em didn't have a real job to begin with! One odd thing about that tune was it seemed to pop up at shows that were really killer. Like, "we've just blown your minds, so now it's time to bring you down on the way out the
  7. Ritual could go on a bit longer - the live version spills out over two sides!
  8. I started a GSH appreciation thread a few years ago on his birthday, but when I went to my profile to pull it up it appears to be gone, probably from the Great Board Crash last year. Anyway, this guy is a big hero of mine, and I'll be seeking this new disc out ASAP. Thanks for the heads up.
  9. I know it's a 'concept album', and the filler tunes are on there to flesh out the story (or whatever) but if you make The Wall a single LP you have a GREAT record.
  10. Noodle! Thanks for the pic, Donna. I was just snuggling on the couch with Delia (aka Doodle) and got up and logged in to see this. Man, this is the longest winter EVER!
  11. Yay Charlie Miller!! If you like that show, the next night is even better. My friend (my attorney) Eric, who is as committed a Deadhead as you'll ever find, always argues that the Dark Star from 6/23 is the best one ever. Plus - the only GD version of "Let It Rock", and an exquisite Black Peter, and other killer stuff.
  12. Ding ding ding!!!! I never thought of it, but that's just spot-on. I always thought Venus would have fit right in on the Plastic Ono Band LP.
  13. Not the Insult Comic Dog thread I was expecting. Just kidding. I was never a big fan of Triumph, but Rik is a fantastic guitarist, who can play damn near anything. Jazz, Rockabilly, whatever. I hope there is a lot of $$ raised - have fun!
  14. My wife had a text from Ellen (Wilco Worshipper) this AM. Her & Jim (Merrick Section) went and saw them last night. It was her first time and she enjoyed the hell out of it.
  15. Jesus Christ, they're gonna get off the hook. Evidently Holder thinks Yoo, Bybee, etc. are only guilty of 'poor judgement'. I think I'm gonna be sick.
  16. Oh dear God, yes it is! I was weaned on that record - easily Jeff's best fusion record, imo. That genre really makes the best use of his crazy, elastic stylings. And having George Martin working with the arrangements (strings, etc.) is icing on the cake.
  17. Is AllGood a big festival? You're breaking my heart here, man! I guess I should try to get in on Gans' show tomorrow. That sounds like fun - AND he's gonna have Nelson!
  18. "With all due respect to my distinguished friend from Kentucky - you just made that story up, there ain't no girl like that"
  19. Yeah, I saw that. Birch Bayh's former chief of staff was on the tv last night saying all kinds of nice things about JM, but I'd be stunned if he decided to do it.
  20. What a bitchin' encore! Magilla always reminds me of a Charlie Parker tune.
  21. I don't think it's just your opinion, Lammy. I would say it's a fact - '94 sucked it pretty hard, although when they came to the Creek they played really well. The 7/20/94 show is as good as anything they did all year. That run, and the Fall run (MSG, especially) are the only things that stand out to me.
  22. Indeed, that would be the shit. I've had really great-sounding cassetes of that show for 25 years, and CD copies for at least 10, and Mike graciously sent me sweet DVD of the video footage as well. But a HDCD would be something I could not pass on. NRPS officially released their set a few years back, and you guys NEED that set. It is a killer.
  23. Driving home from work tonight I thought of this thread. ELP's "Karn Evil 9" came on. Just a straight-down-the-pike-classic prog tune from the seventies, amazing chops, great melodies. But damn...those lyrics are a fine example of why people have such an aversion to prog. Seven virgins and a mule Keep it cool, keep it cool One line - the rest aren't a hell of a lot better imo.
