Your favorite concert openings, enterances ever?
uncool2pillow replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Bob Mould - 1st Avenue, Fall 1989. Touring behind Workbook, his first solo LP. I discovered him through this album that spring and quickly worked my way back through Zen Arcade. By the time of that show, I realized how that album probably alienated a lot of his Husker fans in the Twin Cities. Before shows at First Avenue, they used to (maybe still do) show videos on a projection screen that doubles as a stage curtain, then an announcer (just like Alice Cooper in Purple Rain) announces the act, the screen rises, and the show begins. Bob looked about 50 lbs thinner than he did in his Husk -
Breakfast of Champions really screwed with my head for a long time.

Sir Paul's Crusade Against the Evil Meat Empire

He booked the venue. Is Great American Ballpark booked solid with events every night the Reds aren't playing? C'mon. He generated more for the economy of Cincinnati than he took away. -

Why? If he wasn't playing none of the vendors would have been working. -

You're Paul Effin McCartney. Sir Paul Effin McCartney. You are probably the world's most famous and important living songwriter. You were an integral part of the most important band in rock history. The most important musical phenomenon of the twentieth century. You don't eat meat. You think it's immoral to eat meat. You have established yourself as a person who can make certain demands upon your audience and the venues you play. You do it. Period. He's not banning meat eaters from the concert, just meat itself. Maybe advertisements of meat products. He doesn't want to be associate -

I think it's silly, but he's a Beatle. He gets to throw around his influence however he wants. -
That's the spirit!

I think I pulled the original list of wikipedia, but did make some mistakes. I included O'Rourke purposefully, though, because his role was so important in YHF.

I was thinking about the impact each person had on Wilco is / was.

So a couple of years ago I started this thread. http://viachicago.org/topic/40161-rank-wilco-members/page__fromsearch__1 The timing was unfortunate as it was right around the time word of Jay Bennett's death was announced. I knew nothing about his death when I started the thread, but it was declared insensitive timing and locked. Here was the original post if anyone wants to discuss now. I imagine there's been a thread like this before, but the poll about O'Rourke/Sansone got me thinking... Use your own criteria. Here's mine: Jeff Tweedy Jay Bennett John Sirratt Glenn Kotche Nels Cli

FYI, all the Dick's Picks and lots of other stuff is available on Spotify. I dumped about 2,000 GD tracks into a playlist.

He was caught on camera doing something generous. He didn't do it because he expected a reward. He was rewarded because one of two reasons, probably both. 1) The TV crew was genuinely moved by what they saw and wanted to extend generosity to one who was generous. 2) It made for good TV that made the TV crew look good. I don't think there's going to be a rash of older kids giving baseballs to little kids expecting to be rewarded in the broadcast booth.

The controversy sold. How much curiosity would a sober Amy Winehouse generate? Will her death stop anyone from profiting from her. In the short term they'll profit more. That's why I'm not sure the Elvis analogy fits here either. Elvis's income had little to do with his addictive lifestyle. I think it could be argued that Amy Winehouse's lifestyle generated a huge chunk of her income.

Here's a question: Do those who profited from her drug and alcohol notoriety have blood on their hands? Ultimately, she is responsible for the decisions she made and the addictions she left untreated. But what if managers, publicists, and record label execs all turned a blind eye to her troubles and even encouraged her to release songs like rehab knowing that she was quite possibly killing herself. Do these people bear any responsibility?

I played around w/ it last night. Dumped about 4,000 songs in one playlist to play on shuffle. Just searched by artists and/or album and filled it up. If I can download on my computer at school, I will use the heck out of it. Some artists have pretty ltd or non-existent catalogs, but overall I enjoy it so far. I think the ads are maybe a bit less frequent than Pandora. I like Pandora for the randomness and the ability to discover artists, but I will probably take to spotify to listen to what I want to.

Former Baseball GReat Dale Murphy's take on Wilco
uncool2pillow replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Just A Fan
Rome probably is pretty well despised by most on this board who are at all familiar with him. I find him entertaining in the same way my juvenile college friend is. He is a huge 'mats fan, so wouldn't be surprised to find out he's familiar with Wilco. -
Would this really be a big deal? I see CCR as kind of like Wilco. That is Wilco = Jeff Tweedy + whomever / CCR = John Fogerty + whomever. Granted, the CCR lineup didn't change, but did they bring anything to the table that a Fogerty backup band wouldn't? Maybe, I'm a casual CCR fan, but don't know much about the dynamics before the bitter breakup.

Maybe these are tongue in cheek, but I didn't read them that way.

The sense of entitlement expressed by some in this thread is really entertaining.

drum loop? eta: Or possibly they took a sample of the guitar/bass fuzz from T.V. Eye and then used it as an effect on the guitar/bass tone here. Other than those, I don't hear it. Interesting.

I'm pretty sure that it's always been fairly prominent. Maybe even how I discovered the place.

Too soon for what? That poor girl died 3 years ago and my comment in no way made light of her tragic and horrific death. It was intended to poke fun at "slacktivists" who somehow believe that leaving their patio (or porch) lights on is a meaningful expression of solidarity or support for a girl who was "denied justice". My guess is that many of the people who left their lights on for Caylee are the same ones who annually leave off their lights for an hour to somehow stop global warming.
