That's a loaded question within itself because there are thousands of different answers to that question. In the end, just go off chords you know (keep building up a vocab of chords though) and see what sounds right to your ear because your ear always is the final answer.

Yes, I beat Louie B to giving some advice on Jazz! For an obvious recommendation, check out Miles Davis's electric stuff, but it tends to sway listeners. In more present times, I just saw Chris Potter at my school about a month ago (we actually had a master class too with him), and he was great. He had a great backing band, and his solos explored many realms. So yeah check out Chris Potter Underground. On the Chicago side of things, I have been getting into Ken Vandermark (sax player) and all of his groups. Moreover, I have really been digging Jeff Parker's (guitar) solo record "Like-Cop

I'll still only go see Wilco the day they are playing because tickets are way too expensive! that is if they are playing.

Last year when Sonic Youth played I almost died at the front of the stage with the giant mosh pit that was happening. And three day passes were $50 and $6 service charge and sending the tickets. However, though their prices have raised, it still beats the jammed packed and overpriced Lollapoolza. I actually felt like I could breath at Pitchfork last year besides the whole mosh pit thing.

I saw a "Clockwork" not too long ago though I thought it was not so good. But I do love "One Flew Over..." On a side note, I just got Netflix in order to watch movies one cannot find at the library or rental store. And I just watched "Bad Timing" (Nic Roeg film), it was pretty good. I heard about it via Jim O'Rourke since he does name three of his albums off of Roeg films. I think the next movie I am going to watch is "After Life." But anyways, I have totally sidetracked.

Yeah, I agree with you Lou. It actually took me a long time to realize that I should listen to music that I want to listen too and not what's in the top 100 of 2007 or what every critic raves about. This is what I usually cross-reference a lot or connect the dots between artists because I find it usually works wonders.

I would start off with "Painful." It has guitar noise perfectly placed into a pop setting. Don't worry it's not weird, it's fantastic! I also only have "I Am Not Afraid Of You..." and "I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One." They are both very good too. Moreover, I need to get "Electro-Pura."

I know Nels is most likely using some of his wonderful fuzz pedals and I have seen him use (I believe) springs while playing below the bridge of his Fender Jazzmaster in order to get that sound. I could be wrong though, but I think that's what I have seen.

SYR 3. Actually, I am only kidding. Don't start off on that though I think it's rather good. I started a couple of years ago with "Daydream Nation" and I loved them since.

It's my generation's version of the 80's MTV! But it actually sounds pretty cool.

You could do the book thing or look at websites and I have done both in my past playing experiences; however, I have always found that the best experience that benefits me the most is to listen to records that I like and to try and figure out why what is what or how do they do that. For example, if you want to get better at slide playing, listen to old delta blues records. You know: try and figure out what Robert Johnson is doing and how he gets the sound he does. It's hard, but it makes you that much better musically. If that makes any sense, I guess.

So I am guessing the show is 21+. Phil
