  1. ya know, the v-roys are/were from right here in knoxville-town...i missed them though. i have seen scott miller a couple times here and wished i had more of his material so i could recognize it when he played. thanks for the advice on the v-roys albums!
  2. i'd like to see levi do that too. and, come on with jumping to a conclusion based on that video...seriously?
  3. i love seeing the individual jerseys giving the riders who don them almost a superhuman desire/will to defend/honor that particular jersey.
  4. i'm really excited for the time trial...whole lotta (gc) shakin (up) goin on!
  5. yeah, i wondered to myself if things would have been different had i read first and watched later...i may check out his follow up because there was quite a bit about his writing that i enjoyed. in the meantime, i'm starting
  6. (yes, but...cycling's rules of the race in the tdf are unlike any other sport and can't be explained or rationalized using analogy b/c then they just look silly outside the context and history of this particular race.)
  7. i saw this book's adaptation as a movie before i knew about the book. loved the movie...really endearing. i read the book. not near as endearing. there are endearing bits, don't get me wrong, but i just don't like/don't get all the sexual magical realism stuff...i mean, edit that out, and you have a really good story. in fact, i was so disappointed in the book that after i was done with it, i threw it straight into the trash can. sue me.
  8. we will just have to agree to disagree here, settling instead upon a shared appreciation/enjoyment of the sport.
  9. rule-breaking: no "douchey": most definitely against "unwritten rules of the peloton": yes, and this is where he has already lost stock in the minds of many bike racers and directors throughout the cycling world (except maybe in Spain) again, i am seeing comparisons to other sporting realms (golf, soccer, basketball) in regard to behaviors, rule following/bending, etc., and i have to reiterate that i don't believe that these comparisons work very well simply because cycling, in particular the tdf, is a pursuit that pretty unique in its following of a gentlemen's agreement type of accord.
  10. well, to your point about nascar, this isn't an auto race. and i understand you are trying to compare via analogy, but that will just not work. this race has had 97 runnings, and has its own set of decorum that isn't broken without backlash. true, it is a race, but rarely do leaders take advantage of big rivals during puncture or chain dropping. about the chain dropping, i doubt very seriously that shleck was responsible for the chain falling off as he was already in a rhythm after the initial jump to attack. there are a couple of reasons that anger is directed at contador. first, last year
  11. i didnt know this thread existed... i have been following the tour fervently since '99. of course, the drama of armstrong coming back from cancer drew me in, and i was hooked. it also got me into road cycling and i've been riding ever since. but, back to this year's tour...this has been an interesting year. a huge amount of riders have hit the deck and abandoned. add to this four tough stages in the pyrenees in honor of the 100 years the tour has ridden through them, and it has been one hell of a tour. as far as today's stage went, i'm not sure that alberto contador came across as very s
  12. many thanks to you all for chipping in. i highly respect your opinion, so thanks for all your input! seems like he has some great stuff...this will give me a new artist to exlore.
  13. ok, so i watched this really depressing but well acted movie netflix recommended me tonight called "you can count on me," and the soundtrack was pretty good, if not eclectic. it was a mix b/w classical cello playing a bach piece interlaced with some americana, like the v-roys, loretta lynne, and steve earle. well, i did some research b/c i liked what i heard...long story short, i came across a couple tracks on this lp called "the mountain" by steve earle the del mccoury band. everything i read about it seemed to glow. which leads me to my real point of this thread: what is your opinion of
  14. i really like ryan (you know he produced it?) on that whole album. there are a lotta standouts there. what a combo: ryan and willie.
  15. starting their own label...hmmm....this explains the strange closing to the email update i got from "wilco hq" today. it closes with: "The band will be making a new record and we'll be figuring out how we're gonna release it, etc. So much to do. Stay tuned & stay cool. the HQ camp counselors" i thought that was a bit cryptic, but if they are forming a new label, it makes total sense.
  16. yeah, i've been following his fb posts (sometimes it's a bit like translating hipster), and i can't wait for all this "new" stuff to drop. how does the stuff on myspace sound?
  17. got my copy yesterday, but didn't get around to it until earlier this afternoon. great stuff...initially kinda bummed when i heard that it was more of a solo effort, but it is solid either way. it definitely has a time and place, but a hot (mid 90s) summer day isn't exactly the best context for this album. i want it to be cold and dreary outside. that sounds kinda negative, i guess, but i don't mean it to be because i really like it. mark sounds great picking on his nylon strings here. i suggest a good set of headphones.
  18. i included august on my flawless list. that's a good one by whiskeytown. pneumonia is pretty close for me too...but i may be in the minority there. i have fleet foxes, but i haven't given it much time. maybe i should.
  19. how could i forget iii?? this is a desert island record for me. i really got into this album big time for like six weeks. now when i try to go back, it just ain't the same. forgot this one too! i'll go along with it! i really liked the early foos...but then they never really evolved, so i lost interest.
  20. Flawless, means to me, that I can spin top to bottom, multiple times, and not think twice about inclusion or sequencing of tracks. Also, a flawless album is one that I can leave and come back to, and it feels like a reunion with an old, close friend. Here are some of mine: Wilco: YHF (AGIB would be with Less than you think cut off at the 3:05 mark) The National: High Violet Weezer: Blue, Pinkerton Coldplay: Parachutes Counting Crows: August and Everything After The Jayhawks: Rainy Day Music Ryan Adams: Cold Roses Sun Kil Moon: Ghosts of the Great Highway Some are very close.. I think wi
  21. gosh. agreed! just found this link and have listened to this stream twice now. at first, when i found out it was just mark and some nylon strings, i was a little turned off. after listening to this track, however, it appears my initial disdain was unfounded... looking forward to this! anybody heard anything else?
  22. the only thing i'd change about this post for it to be my thoughts exactly is changing the six to seven times outta ten. war on war. good jam, love the lyrics, fun to crank...plus it bats cleanup on yhf. home run every time.
  23. i got this w/the virginia ep, and i couldn't make it through to the end...
