Page 100 of Chronicles to be exact... Yea there are plenty of "New Dylans" all of them not Dylan, but plenty of them worthwhile in their own right....Prine, Waits, etc. Hell tons of Dylan's associates and contemporaries we NEVER talk about here.....or rarely (Ochs, Anderson, Paxton, Van Ronk etc.) As always I am not sure why we are pitting Jeff Tweedy up against Bob Dylan.....but.... I suppose this is simply the nature of the beast. As long as artists can continue to sell the same product over and over in slightly different forms they will. LouieB

I wish more artists would do what the Cure did (and Springsteen) simply throw all the b sides, rareties, etc on a box set and be done with it. Making us buy albums over and over is simply unfair. LouieB

Actually no I don't....tell me please.... I agree with you on this. While there were certainly many singsongwriters prior to Dylan (though not a ton), his inspiration was monumental. Dylan gave any number of people a new way to view their need to express themselves. There are very few members of that generation of performers and even many in the intervening years, that derived inspiration from Dylan. His songbook is the inspiration for many generations of writers, including Jeff. Uncle Tupelo had several Dylan songs in their repetoire and he still performs a song or two even now. A

Rowan and Martin were a strange phenom....they came from seemingly nowhere (unlike the Smothers Brothers) and then went back to nowhere once the show was canceled. But the show itself was so fun, yet so much of its time (like the Monkees) that it is hard to imagine those years without it. LouieB

It is retailing at $35, but on Amazon at $22 I think. Yea, I think you would enjoy it. Edit- Having actually started to get into the meat of this thing, I really highly recommend it. Covering the background of bop to the free jazz of the 60s and the reaction of both the critics and the musicians is material I knew something about, but is none the less handled in a highly intelligent and insightful way. This book is like fine wine or excellent micro or home brew (or other stupid metaphors about inbibing that I won't continue), it needs to be savored slowly and intently. Simply the bread

I don't know.... When the song was first performed it showed up as "Walken" on the set list, clearly a misspelling, and everyone here started calling it that anyway (was it supposed to be called "Walkin" or "Talkin to Myself About You" or something that made sense??), since clearly the song has nothing to do with Christopher Walken so far as I can tell. I suppose someone will have to ask Jeff if this is true or not, but I can't imagine that that was supposed to be the name of the song, but when everyone kept calling it that, it took on the name. It was sort of the first new song that was pl

The only song I am just really sick of is Walken, but not too sick of it since the title is a backhanded tribute to VC.... I pass the Wilco loft nearly every work day and I always flash to the vid included in the deluxe set. I always hope that the door is open to the loft, but at 7;45 AM it never is.... LouieB

What's the price of gas where you are?
LouieB replied to Twisted Acres's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Actually at $4 a gallon gas isn't too much. I am just not looking forward to $5 for $6 per. That is really going to hurt. LouieB -
You can avoid that by not eating too much, particularly high fat or high carbohydrate foods.....get plenty of excercise and eat lots of veggies.... LouieB

Bumping this thread back.... I bought this book recently (Amazon has it pretty deeply discounted FYI), I have to say how good it is. I am only a bit into it and at first I was sort of put off by the academic introductions which seem sort of didactic, but once it goes into the background and discusses the stories of some of the musicians and their educations, it is actually quite interesting. I realize this isn't necessarily something everyone here is interested in, but if I do think if you have some interest in the subject matter, it will be worth your time. Check it out. Also I woul

This past week I got gas in down state IL for around $3.70. Meanwhile Chicago has the highest in the nation for upwards of $4.25 or more. LouieB -

So how old are you? It must not be old enough.... As far as Brian Wilson, he is a songwriting genius not based on his lyrics, but on the sound of his music. (I have been saying this for years here.....) LouieB

I also heard the Pat Shroeder interview and I thought it was quite insightful. I bear no ill will to Hillary, even with all the gaffs. I thought the Robert Kennedy comment was rather crude, but it has a point. Although I am an Obama supporter (he is the hometown guy after all), he is just as likely to self destruct as anyone. So far he has dodged the Rezo bullet, but this may not last forever. LouieB

I have had two of these also and it was nearly painless and over in a couple seconds. DON'T under any circumstances ask to see the needle if you are scared. First of all, there are two needles...one to anesthnetize the area and the other to put in the meds. If done correctly you should feel nearly nothing. But the second needle is HUGE by contrast to the first which is tiny and thin. Incidently both injections did nothing for me, but the pain eventually cleared up on its own. These proceedures do different things for different people, that's just the way it is. LouieB
